Q: The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to start

I am trying to sync my iPhone 4 with iTunes and I receive this "The iPhone 'XYZ's iPhone' could not be synced because the sync session failed to start." I have synced this phone many times in the past without any issues and this error just started to occur. I have done all the usual: reset my phone settings, restarted my computer etc. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I could do?

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Just made one very simple move without having to restore iPhone or reinstall iTunes..

1st step:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 *Read 'in my case' in here first before following this link*
Follow that link to restart (or if necessary) reinstall your Apple mobile device support.

In my case, Leave iPhone connected all the way. I first exit iTunes. Then i stopped the Apple Mobile device support (by following a part on that link above in step 1) which Effectively made my iPhone undetectable on itunes but discoverable by windows as a 'camera device'. Then while device is still connected, i started the Apple mobile dev support again. Now i open itunes and there my iPhone re-appears.

2nd step: After your iphone re-appears on iTunes, press Sync and all is well...

P.S, Mine is iPhone 4 running on iOS 5, iTunes 10.5, Windows 7..

SodInfinity - your instructions did the trick. I closed iTunes, stopped and restarted Apple Mobile device support under Windows 7 services. I then restarted iTunes and my 4s started to sync.

    Thanks a bunch!

Perfect instructions - fixed my same problem, thanks! Mine was on a iPhone 4 and I had just added via iTunes about 1G of CBR/CBZ files...

    Worked like a charm,

the only thing I had to do different was after restarting the Apple Mobile Device service, was to then unplug, and replug my iphone into my computer- iTunes didnt detect it after 10 minutes, but worked like a champ when it came back online.

    Thanks!!!

It looks like there's still some debugging to do... heartbreaking, Apple.

Wow, SodInfinity, you totally saved the day! My error is gone and now it's syncing at last!

iPhone 4, immediately after iOS 5.0 update

    Windows 7 64bit

    iTunes 10.5.0

In my case, I had to:

    1. Close iTunes

    2. Stop and Restart the Apple Mobile Device Management Service by right clicking My Computer and selecting "Manage", then Services.

    3. Reopen iTunes.  I noticed my phone was NOT listed.

    4. Unplug phone, wait 5 seconds, then reconnect.

    5. It began syncing!!  Hurray!

It's now working for me too.  Here's what I did.

I had upgraded to iTunes 10.5 on my Windows 7 (64bit) machine.  Upgraded my iPad 2 3G to iOS5.  An bought an iPhone 4S which of course comes with iOS5.

Wifi sync worked only intermittantly.  Whenever I restarted iTunes, everything sync'd OK first time over wifi.  But then it wouldn't work.  Either the device disappeared from the iTunes device list, or the sync seemed to start (at one end: itunes or device) but never really got going.

RESOLUTION:  Using Control Panel, uninstall iTunes, Quicktime, Bonjour, and Bonjour Print Service.  Then reboot.  Download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer, and install iTunes.  Reboot.

Now wifi sync seems to work every time.  Hope this helps others.

    Hi,

My resolution to the sync failure *** excessive "Other" space usage situation was a factory reset and restore.  (Still in progress, though.)  Other space is back down to .58 GB and my audio is syncing.

Fingers crossed and I'll update this if I am disappointed.

    Ever the sanguine Apple customer,

    Pat

    Hey babies,

Happy to report I newly have a butt load of songs back in my recently restored 3GS au IOS 5.  It appears the factory reset carried the day.

    Rondo a la Turk lives!

For Windows 7 / Vista Users:

    1) Close Your iTunes

    2) Show Your Hidden Files & Folders ( Uncheck Hide Protected Operating System Files )

    3) Go to C:\Users\Your Account Name\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\SyncNotifier

    4) Cut All The Files Listed to Another Folder ( Desktop For Example )

    5) Open Your iTunes & Gave it Another Shoot ..

    Best Regards.
