Q: OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

After reading a few more posts that this patch might fix the sign in issue, I thought I'd better give it a try.

    No luck.

The 2010 macbook pros defaulted to 32 bit kernel in OSX 10.6 per this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770

With Lion (10.7.x) they switched to 64 bit default kernel https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3225388?start=0&tstart=0

Just tried holding the 32 keys during boot up - it does in fact work, and boots the system with the 32 bit kernel.

Unfortunately, it did not solve the auto graphics switching causing a lockup on boot up about 5-7 seconds after the logon screen shows up.

So it still exists for me...

I'll watch the forums a bit longer and if it looks like others are fixing it with a new logic board, I guess I'll need to take it in.

For those who specifically have the Mid-2010 macBook Pro and who STILL have the issue even after installing the update, print out the knowledgebase article that discusses the issue and take the MBP to the Genius Bar, then ask them to replace the logic board.  I'm pretty sure that's the only thing that may truly fix it, apart from waiting till God only knows how long for another software patch.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088

If there's no Apple Store nearby, call and relay the ID for the knowledgebase article so they'll know you are qualified for a free service repair and have it shipped in.  It specifically indicates that they will service your MBP for free as long as it's not over 2 years ago.

I just read chrisby10's latest report, but I'm not convinced that this is a hardware issue.

I actually have a refurbed macbook pro 15 inch, 2010 model that was "remanufactured'

according to the lookup id websites in April 2011.

It has the 330M nvidia graphics chipset. Any outstanding haqrdware issues

should have been addressed by the refurb factory, by that date, surely?

The Mac sites, e.g. Mac Rumors, Macworld, AI, Hardmac, TUAW, 9 to 5 Mac

and even Anandtech should have picked up on this issue, especially if it was

purely caused by hardware malfunction and Apple, in such circumstances,

would issue a recall, one would think?

Another possible cause, indirectly, might be the fallout from

the chipset wars, when Intel forced nVidia out of the chipset

for iCore business and Apple was left unsupported by nVidia

in developing the drivers for the 330M?

@BasementJack: Thanks for the "32" tip. I didn't know that. Hope it teaches me not to make assumptions about things I haven't actually tried.

At least the path to a resolution is now pretty clear-cut - either the graphics patch works, or else you pursue the hardware-fix path as discussed above. Last week, we were dancing in circles, trying different things.

    FYI

i just updated lion 10.7.2 plus the video update. First try after enabling AGS and again, beach ball of death, stuck at login *BUT* i then tried booting with safemode (hold shift during boot http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564)

After login, i went to powe settings to enable AGS (i believe safe mode actually disables it) then i rebooted.

I was then able to  boot just fine after that, i believe 2 or 3 times. So maybe after the update there is something still wrong in the caches.. whatever, i am not too excited.

I just wanted to let you know, in case someone else wants to try it an see if my observation is right.

    Regards

I'd just like to add myself to the list of people who have this problem.

    Model Name:          MacBook Pro

      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro6,2

      Processor Name:          Intel Core i5

      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz

      Number of Processors:          1

      Total Number of Cores:          2

L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB

      L3 Cache:          3 MB

      Memory:          8 GB

      Processor Interconnect Speed:          4.8 GT/s

      Boot ROM Version:          MBP61.0057.B0C

Also has the 330M graphics card.

I have been through all of the troubleshooting steps except for doing a clean install of Lion (which I would rather not do if this really is a hardware problem).

Have you installed the MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 and still have the login hangs?

Here are the details for that update which contains other options for repair if the software update does not solve the issue.

    Karelll,

There are other options if the Macbook Pro Video update didn't fix your issue. Visit this site for additional options.

So I have some updates here from Germany.

After installing the new MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 I still have the freezes at login screen. That update doesn't fixed the problem.

So I was at a premium reseller here in Aschaffenburg and that guy did some diagnostic things on the macbookpro. After 30 mins. he told me that my system is fine and there is no probleme with freezes -> or lets say that the diagnostic tool sad that everything is fine. But he also confirmed that problem (thanks god the system freezed at the store in front of him) and told me ... NOW GET THIS:

"Yeah I see that there is a problem but u'r warranty expiered so I can't repair it without extra charge."

This problem is ******* ME OFF!!!

@hkoci: Your premium reseller "needs help". Print this out and show it to them

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US

It was published by @chairmo on this thread a few days ago - so it's pretty new, and some of Apple's reps around the world may not yet be aware of it. If you give yours a "heads-up" and they still refuse to help, either find a better retailer, or else go through Apple's phone support. Hang in there.

    Cheers.

To everyone's interest: my MacBook Pro logic board was finally replaced two days ago, and the problem was still there . So I have been back to the Genius Bar today (again...) with my repaired-but-not-properly-working Mac. Just while the technician was working with my computer, they have received a notification about a new quality program for this same issue.

Those waiting for a software fix, then, wait no more, or wait forever, as it seems that Apple has found something wrong with at least some mid-2010 Logic Boards. It was not Lion's fault, after all...

So, if you have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15'' which experiences a spinning-ball freeze at login with OS X Lion, check Apple's support page, as they should post news quite soon. You will probably have to take your computer to an Apple Store; then, if your computer's serial number corresponds to an affected machine, Apple will change your Logic Board for a new revised one (free of charge, even if the computer is out of warranty).

@jmacbookpro: That seems good, but as it is not official (yet), I believe we should take our macbooks pro to Apple Store.

Anyway, this is the link to follow any update from Apple to Macbook Pro: http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro/

I still don't think that this is a hardware problem. Snow Leopard has work peferct for 'years'.
