I need to change from MSWord to Pages in order to use the iCloud and can't seem to figure out how to password protect documents.  The previous, older discussion it a bit to combersome -- certainly this issue must have been addressed with the newer versions.  Any help will be greatly apprecitated.  Larry

Require a password to open is at the foot of the Documents Inspector.

Just be aware that this only works with Pages, it is not the same as MsWord's.

I don't have an iPad nor am using iCloud but believe you have to have all your iWork apps both on the mobile devices and your computer updated to the latest versions.

You need also to have updated to OSX 10.7.2 and iTunes 10.5.

Then set-up iCloud in Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Internet Wireless > iCloud

Select what apps, docs etc synchronise.

At this point I believe it "just happens". You just save locally and the file also appears on your other devices.

Did any of you figure out how to KEEP the password protection from a protected Pages doc that you upload to iCloud?  I succeed in uploading a doc from my laptop, and it shows as a page with with Pages icon in the center (no visible text).  So far so good.  But once I open that doc using my iPhone, a task that as expected requieres entering the password for that doc in my iPhone, then the protection seems to disapear and it gets saved without the protection right in iCloud.  If I try to open it back again (the icon for the documents changed from the Pages icon I described above to the text of the first page) entering the icon is not necessary!

Sorry, I meant entering the PASSWORD is not necessary.

good question lettersoup.  I'm having the same problem.  Did anyone ever answer you on this?

This may not be a real solution but it works for what I am using it for, accessing a long list of things, that I dont plan on editing: This does not work if yo are opening the document on your iPhone and plan on editing it.

    So

I have mountain lion and Pages 4.2.

If I go to my Pages app on my iPhone, the document is there.

If you have used a password already to open it on your iPhone, it wont ask again (the problem) so you may need to delete it from iCloud (make sure you have a downloaded copy first), and then re-upload it to iCloud.

Then when you go to open it, it gives me a window

    Open Document

This document may look different on your iOS device than on your Mac. Use open copy to preserve the original.

tap on the option "Open Copy"

Doing that calls for a password

    you can read the document

close it, delete it (done as though you were deleting an app, touch on it for a few seconds, it starts wiggling, then hit the trash button)

that lets you access a copy  the document, and keeps the original password protected.

really lame I know but works for what I am using it for.

    kind of

that does seem to be the only workaround - it is pretty lame, and makes iWork much less useful than it should be - this, and a bunch of other lame things about iWork, are really frustrating (another one is the way that Numbers documents lose formatting when editing between Mac and iPad, and any forms created on the iPad are deleted completely if you open the Numbers file on a Mac).....I don't get how Apple pays so much attention to detail with hardware and OS, and so much carelessness when it comes to applications. I'd love to use my iPad and iWork for work projects, but it's just not possible.

I've have the same problem, can't understand why this is not fixed. Anyone got any news on the matter?

Thanks Roger,  I've been doing the same thing but one would think Apple could add a button for password as an option for ipad and iphone.  It really detracts from the usefulness to have to work around and not be able to edit the doc.

Another customer that would like passwords to persist even after editing in iOS. But I can work around that.

A different problem is that my password-protected document opens on my Mac without a password.

Good news. Passwords now persists after editing in iOS. They've fixed it. All you have to do is to update to iOS7 and the new Pages app.
