Q: Mini display port to HDMI problem

I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?

I've had a couple people tell me that the mini displayport to HDMI connecter causes the logicboard to overheat and so shorten the MBP's life expectancy. Any truth in this?

    No

I just wanted to write that after the recent 10.7.2 software update, my non-functioning in OS X but working fine in Windows Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter now works great in OS X.  All problems resolved.  If anyone is having trouble and is running Lion, I'd give upgrading a shot.

I had this exact same problem. But I noticed that my mini display port to HDMI adaptor (the short white cable) was bent. So I gave the HDMI cable some more slack and straightened it out, and it works fine.

So if in doubt, straighten it out.

MacBook Pro mid 2010 & Moshi HDMI adapter worked fine for 12 months then stopped working. Checked cables and TV ports with other appliances, all good so back to the Mac.  Tried connecting everything up first then turning on hte Mac, screen started to flash on and off like a frequency mismatch.

Upgrade to Lion, the TV screen briefly blanks then returns to defaul display.  Checked using two adapters, two cable and two TVs with different resolutions, still no fix.  Straightened cables, no fix. Any help would be welcome.

Is the mini display port to fragile to handle connection and disconnection on portable?  What does that mean for Thunderbolt peripherals?

Make sure you're running OS X 10.7.2 and have all associated updates installed. (Run  -> Software Update).  Do you?  If you didn't, does this fix the problem?

Having the same problem, and I'm running OS X 10.7.2.

Mini display to HDMI worked fine before the upgrade. Now when I plug the HDMI cable to the Mac, the screen blinks blue a couple of times, and then returns as if nothing happened.

Have tried it with 2 different mac's - problem persists. Have tested the HDMI cable, and it's working fine when I using bluray player.

The upgrade to Lion was supposed to be part of the fix, straight to 10.7.2 followed by Software Update before trying to connect to the TV, no fix.

    Hi,

I am going to buy a mini display port to hdmi, need advice whether to go for an adaptor and use my hdmi cable i already have, or just go for the cable. I've seen lots on ebay, but thinking the cheaper i buy, the less chance of it working.

    Any models/makes you recommend?

i'd go for whatever you find in the official apple store to have the highest possiblity for it to work.

The Moshi seems to be recommended as a good choice, it's on sale at the Apple store.

The cheap adapter that I bought on ebay worked fine for video but did not support audio.  The Moshi was great, HD support, AC3 audio, worked really well until it stopped working.  So now I have two adapters failing to work, checked against two different HDMI cables and two different HD TVs, Snow Leopard and Latest Lion.  I will have to borrow a mini display or THunderbolt Mac to do a final check but I am suspecting that either the port or the OS is the source of the problem.

I'm not too sure if my macbook pro will support audio through any adapter because i brought it in mid 2009 and i've read that only macbook pro's made from mid 2010 will support audio, is this true? Also when you say it doesn't suport audio, does audio still come from the laptop or is it complety muted?

I may just go for the moshi and if that breaks, go for a cheap one off ebay.

I, too, have a Moshi Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter that works (er...worked...until last night) with a 13" MacBook Pro (running 10.6.2 Snow Leopard)  from May 2010 with my 40" Westinghouse HDTV, connected to a standard HDMI-to-HDMI cord from Walmart.

Last night, we plugged in the Moshi Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter into a 2008 15" unibody MacBook Pro, running 10.7.2 Lion.  We got the blue flash, which was good.  Then, we plugged in a different HDMI-to-HDMI cord, the one that came with our Blu-Ray player, in turn into a 22" Samsung flat panel monitor.

    No picture on the monitor.

    I clicked 'Detect Displays'.

    Still nothing.

This monitor has worked for the past 11 months with our DVI-to-HDMI cord, from both our 2003 15" PowerBook G4 and our Early'08 15" MacBook Pro (both running 10.5.8 Leopard) -- using an additional aux cable for audio, but on the newer, non-unibody computer, it worked perfectly in Display Mirroring and 1080i side-by-side arrangement.

I examined the Moshi adapter under fluorescent light -- it looks to me like there is no damage.  I read this thread and straightened out the cords, changed the order in which I plugged them in, power-cycled everything, tried every single possible choice of resolution on the Display SysPref pane... nothing.  I can't figure out how to change the refresh rate (following a piece of earlier advice) in OS X Lion because the Samsung display does not show up at all.

At first, I thought that the Mini DisplayPort in the unibody MBP was not working.  But doesn't the blue flash mean that it is connected and functioning?  What do I do next, go out and buy a new cord, new adapter or try the Moshi again with a *different* Snow-Leopard/Lion Apple computer?
