When I select "All Inboxes" on my iPhone 4s, I see duplicates of each and every message I receive. Furthermore, the duplicate can't be deleted and I get an error message informing so! I suspect this phenomenon is occurring because I have both an iCloud and a MobileMe account. I want to cancel the MobileMe one.

Here's the deal:

My iPhone 4s lists three email accounts, including a "MobileMe" one that I want to delete because I believe it is delivering duplicate messages. However, I can't seem to figure out how to delete the MobileMe's email account or, for that matter, MobileMe itself. Apple support screens refer to cancelling a MobileMe account but are not clear on how to actually do it.

1. On the iPhone 4s, I click on the "Mail" icon at the bottom of the screen

2. On a screen under the heading "Mailboxes," under "Inboxes," there are two that read exactly the same (I think one is iCloud and the other MobileMe).

3. On the same screen, under "Accounts," I see an iCloud account logo, a Bellsouth/Yahoo account logo and a MobileMe account logo.

4. I want to keep the iCloud and Bellsouth/Yahoo accounts but delete the MobileMe one but I can find no way on this screen or any other iPhone 4s screen to do so. Nor do I see any path to do so in iTunes. And the MobileMe account doesn't even show up in the Apple email app on the laptop to which I sync my iPhone.

If I go to www.me.com and log into my MobileMe account, there is no apparent way to disable, delete or otherwise cancel it. Why?

I am convinced that the simultaneous presence of both iCloud and MobileMe accounts is responsible for the double email messages when I select to view "All inboxes" on my iPhone. (A workaround is to simply select just one of the accounts, say, the iCloud one. Then I see only one copy of each message. That's OK but surely there is some way to kill off this redundant MobileMe account AND the duplicate messages, yes???

If you're getting duplicate email, it is because your MobileMe and iCloud accounts are actually the same. If the name before the @ sign is the same and the suffix on each is mac.com or me.com, then email sent to either will be delivered to both accounts. Deleting either of the accounts is quite simple: go to settings, then click on "mail, contacts, calendars". Next, select the account that you which wish to delete, and in the next screen scroll all the way to the bottom, and there should be a "delete account" button. Press that and you should be good to go.

First, thanks for the reply. And, I believe you are exactly right that the names are the same. However, when I go (on my iPhone) as you suggest to "Settings," "Mail, Contacts, Calendars," only two accounts are showing; my Mac account and my Bellsouth one. If I select either, I get an option to delete but the duplicate "MobileMe" account does not appear. It only shows up, as described above, if I:

It's nutso, I admit, but true. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Did you go to the mobileme website <me.com> and follow the instructions to migrate your mobileme account to iCloud? I would still try to delete the mobile me account on your device and then set up the icloud mail through the iCloud tab in settings.  If that doesn't work I would delete the iCloud account (go to settings/iCloud and select "delete account" at the bottom of the page.  Then reactivate iCloud using the same account info.

    Hope that helps

When iCloud became operational, I carefully went through the process and migrated the MobileMe account to it. I agree that the best solution would be to delete the MobileMe on the iPhone but, as I've admitted, I can't find an option in any iPhone menu to do that. So, that leaves deleting, then reactivating the iCloud account. I am understandably reluctant to take that step since I don't want to lose anything, particularly since deselecting "All Inboxes" and simply choosing one of the two duplicates gets me to where I want to be. However, I'd rather fix the problem than rely on a workaround and probably will do as you suggest. Thanks for your replies.

cpj -- I did exactly as you (and an Apple chat-tech) suggested and it solved the problem. Specifically, I deleted the iCloud account, powered down the iPhone, then turned it back on. Success! The duplicate inbox is gone. Thanks for your input.

However, while the above solved the initial problem, I confess to ongoing frustration, albeit at lower levels, with the multiplicity of calendars (home, work, icloud, etc., etc.) and the occasional duplicates still appear, apparently depending on which device I've input an event or which calendars I have "turned on." Honestly, I've tried to pare all of these down to just one -- iCloud -- but for some reason, certain events won't show up unless I enable a second or third calendar. In addition, it sometimes seems that a calendar or two that I've disabled somehow turns itself back on. I know there must be a simple way to tame all of this but no matter what I do, stray duplicates still occur after a sync. I input events from an iPhone4s, an iPad2 and a Mac Air. While I'll continue to try to figure out why these annoying dupes still appear, I must say that it seems iCloud and all attached devices ought to be smart enough to weed out obvious duplicates. I shall press on ...

    Hello,

I have a question with iCloud mail and MobileMe email address I just read how you helped dc_scott77 how do you get that set up meaning delete MobileMe email and get iCloud email set like how dc_scott77 had it it and fixed it do you mind typing that step by step on how to delete MobileMe email address I mean @me.com address gone and have a different one cause I want to have the one that I use for iTunes account also for iCloud account! Thanks

I just followed the instructions "cpj357" offered:

(to) delete the iCloud account (go to settings/iCloud and select "delete account" at the bottom of the page.  Then reactivate iCloud using the same account info.

This worked but, as per my later message in this thread, once in a while I still see an occasional duplicate or two, particularly with holiday notifications. My point was that it seems that the software ought to be smart enough to automatically delete calendar duplicates, not matter how many "calendars" are "turned on." I rarely have problems now because I don't need multiple calendars so I turned all but one "off."

It's not clear to me what you are asking.  Do you mean that you want to eliminate one iCloud account and sign into another, or do you want to create a new one?  If you want to create a new one with a different name, I assume that you want to transfer any data from the current account to the new account.  Am I right?
