Had the same problem with mine and my wife's iPhone 4S'. Left overnight with all things turned off (no bluetooth, etc.) and on mine (white iPhone 4S) the next morning, was so drained it did not turn on.  Had to first charge it to get anything out of it.  My wife's (black iPhone 4S) was at 12%.

Since then, we are carefull to charge it often during the day.

They have not repeated going all the way to 12% or less.  But they do get to 65% overnight.

Something has got to be fixed.  Willing to work with Apple if they have some test software or the like.  Else, will have to go and get replacement iPhones.

Does anyone actually read any of the advice people give here or does everyone just drop by to complain?

    Thank you Javaghela.

I am trying your advice and testing it in standby for the next hour. In 20 minutes it has drained 1%. That is already a huge improvement.

I lose 15% battery per hour in with all apps closed and the phone sitting on my desk not being used. If I turn off most of the notifications, calendar seemingly the biggest culprit, it gets much better but it's still not as good as my iPhone 4 or my old iPhone 3. I've even been to the apple store and had mine replaced thinking it was a bad phone but the new one has the same issue.

30 hrs battery life.  location off, wi-fi off, bluetooth off, 3g off.

timezone is wrong, and keeps coming on to cupertino, even when you set it manually.  huge problems with icloud cal, contact, note, etc syncing.

hrs on phone with apple, backup, restore, total wipes, replaced phone with new one, and on and on.

apple died with jobs.  They need to spend some of the $60 billion in cash they've amassed and maybe hire 2 or 3 people to test things for a couple days before selling them.

Dayum,  if you want you can do a fresh install of iOS 5 then change this settings.  You will definitely see improved battery life.  My iPhone 4S yesterday nite @ 11.00 PM PST was still at 50% battery life which is excellent.  Before I made this change in settings my iPhone 4S battery would die by 7.00 PM PST.  Apart from that if you use your mobile heavily on daily basis then you battery will drain faster.

Ok I did some testing and here are my results. With 3G cellular data turned on this is what I get for results when I am at 70 percent.

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/ovdq0b

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/7jhiy8

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/nim8xj

These first 3 files show my results with cellular data turned on.

    47 min Usage at 90%

    1 hr 15 min Usage at 80%

    1 hr 41 min Usage at 70%

That is about 30 min average every 10%. The would equal only 5 hours of Usage for a full discharge. Probably less.

Now here it is with wifi on but cellular data turned off.

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/92gtb8

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/rli1io

    files.me.com/kc7gnm/tbhcd3

Now I didn't turn off cellular data until about 93% so the first one will be off a little.

    48 min Usage at 90%

    1 hr 53 Min Usage at 80%

    3 hr 13 Min Usage at 70%

At this rate I should get about 11-12 hours of usage time out of my phone. That is double what it was when the 3G cellular data is enabled. I realize that 3G does use more power but even when you are on wifi with cellular data turned on it still drains just as fast as it does on 3G alone. My conclusion is there is probably a software problem with the 3G data that isn't letting the wifi take full control of the data when it has wifi.

People are waiting for an official properly formatted knowledge base solution from Apple that will preserve the "smart" part of the "smartphone" i.e. a solution that is different than turning notifications, 3G, geoloc and everything that makes a smartphone smart... I think that's reasonable...

ok I did what was suggested here to restore to factory settings and start as new phone.

    stats:

    12midnight - 100%

    10am - 85%

    1:45pm - 65%

under usage this is what it says:

    Usage : 2 hours, 21 minutes

    Standby: 13 hours, 44 minutes

that's a big improvement from where it was before i restored it to factory setting.

    Got 4s on launch day.

Had it set up just like my iphone 4

    Email push

Location on (Maps, Find my iphone)

    icloud on

    Battery drain on new 4s

    4 hr usage

    12 hr standbye

    phone dies

Apple gave me a new phone on Tuesday.

    Same issues as before.

    I have turned off:

    Location

    icloud

    email set to manual.

There is some battery gain, but I should not have to do this.

I called support today and they set me up another apple appointment and said they will give me another new phone.

I have had several crash reports on both phone.

Don't see how this will help, but I will try and update

I found a flaw in the iOS 5

there is a option that constantly uses your location service without you knowing,

go to settings> location services> go to the bottom and go to system services> turn all off except leave cell network search, compass calibration and traffic on, and turn the status bar icon on, so you know when your location is being used

the location based iAds,and setting Time Zone are constantly using the GPS.

I noticed a HUGE battery life difference that is much better,

So excited to find this thread and confirm I'm not crazy! My iPhone 4 would make it through a typical day and I would be plugging it in at the end of the night with 60% charge remaining. The 4S can't even make it through the day! I'm having to plug it in by 3 in the afternoon! Today I'm sitting at 21% power and I haven't placed a call with it and I have almost all notification and location service off. Also, I thought maybe it was something corrupt, so last night I reset it completely and reloaded it as though it was a new phone and did not use a previous backup (just plugged it into iTunes and pretended I had never owned a phone before)  -- fat lot of good that did me as today was just as bad as ever!

    Does anything help fix this?

I've been at least able to make my phone useful by turning off wifi. 2.5 days instead of 12 hours. now in line with my original iphone, but able to do more. I would love to see a more permanent fix without restrictions.

    >Does anyone actually read any of the advice people give here or does everyone just drop by to complain?

restored in dfu mode in response to apple's efforts, and the battery was drained.  it has done nothing to fix the battery life.  it does seem to be related to icloud, and possibly is more prevalent to users with one itunes address and a separate mobilme, now icloud address.

Spent many hours with apple, the battery life is only one of the real problems with this phone.  The fixes aren't obvious.  I'm glad this is working for you, but it isn't for many of us.

but you miss a big point.  Even if draining the battery, after a DFU restore, then turning off wi-fi, bluetooth, icloud, location, 3g, siri, etc. worked, it isn't the product we paid $2000 for with the contract, and it certainly isn't the product and service i want.  This is a phone that my wife could never get to work and i really a waste of time in its current state.

Exchange mail account (by itself) did not appear to degrade battery life.  I have moved on to contacts.
