I've had every iPhone release since the original first launched in 2007 (launch day every time for me - sad but true ).

I have updated every time a new OS revision has come out with varying degrees of success, but have never had an emergency "oh (insert expletive here) what's happened to my (insert expletive here) iPhone!" moment.

Some have gone effortlessly, others, like iOS 5 were a bit more time consuming, not because of the software, but because the demand on the servers was huge, so it took an absolute age to download, verify and complete the installation. The iPhone 4 did seem a bit hesitant at times after the upgrade, so I restored it 24hrs later, once the demand on the servers had been reduced and it worked absolutely fine after that. (I still bought the 4S 64GB on launch day ).

On the couple of occasions my iPhone seemed a little slower after the upgrade, I would restore my iPhone and install the upgrade again. This solved the issues I was experiencing of slowness on these occasions and the iPhones worked fine afterwards.

There were a couple of times battery % was being somewhat random, showing 98% one minute then 74% the next. Hard reset returned it to 98%. I found that if I totally exhausted the battery, used the iPhone until it shut itself down, then charged uninterrupted to 100%, the battery % was accurate from then on.

I can't say what caused this, was it a bug in the iOS? Probably not since Restoring or depleting and fully charging rectified the issues. It could have been a corrupt back up file causing some issues, which was rectified when I restored and set up as a new iPhone.

Upgrading your iPhone software is no different to upgrading your Mac or PC OS. It is a completely new OS, some of the Apps (or Programs) you have installed prior to upgrade, may not be fully compatible (yet) as a result some bugs may appear or manifest in a variety of ways.

You can help troubleshoot issues by Restoring your iPhone and setting it up as a new iPhone (you can always restore it from a previous back up again later). If the issues you are experiencing are no longer present, the cause is more likely a third party App conflicting somewhere.

I waited until October 17 to upgrade so I could peruse this forum for a while after the update became available. I  updated two iPhone 4's and one iPod touch 4g and they all updated no problem and right to this point all three devices are working flawlessly. Sorry to hear of others having problems, but I agree with Mr. Black's analysis from  earlier in this thread.

I upgraded to IOS5 and when my battery went down so did my phone.  Only get the Apple wit a blac screen.  Battery life after upgrade was diminished.

I echo necronym's comments–our experiences are very similar.

I have been performing updates on iOS devices since iOS version 2.x and have never had a problem.

    WRT iOS5, I updated a 3GS, 2 iPhone 4s, and 2 iPad 2s all without problems.

I also have an iPhone 4S and it works just fine—no major problems at all, 'it just works'.

I upgraded a couple of days ago... I have minimal notification and location services enabled. I don't use iCloud or report Diag & Usage info (off).

    Battery Usage (idle, black screen):

    • 1st night, 1%, 100%-99%
    • 2nd night, 5%, 44%-39%

I like the camera access from the lock screen.

iMessage is a little flakey, but seems to work.

I was the test case for the family and have no reason not to update the rest of the iPhones...

Ok for those of you havent said there are any bugs...there are a few, but they are big ones in my view.

    Here is what I have:

    1) Iphone 4 AT&T (32GB, black, v5.0 (9A334), model firmware 4.11.08)

    2) Ipad2 Wifi only (Black)

    3) Ipad2 AT&T (64GB Black)

I have updated to IOS5 on all of them and here are my major painpoints

    1) IOS 5 does not work with any car stereo so far. I have an Pioneer Avic F90BT which worked fine with IOS 4 however after the update it cannot do anything with the Mp3 player. I verified this with every device I upgraded to IOS 5. My stereo uses the ipod plug so that it can communicate via the ipod interface and do all the controls via the radio. I was even able to play videos to my car stereo.  Tried with both Ipads and the iphone With IOS5 - Not anymore

In addition to this it does not work on a Brand New 2011 Civic stereo. My girlfriend car can control an Iphone and it is also having issues. It indicates the songs, but when you select the option to play, no audio, no controls etc. Even tried the audio out jack to eliminate the iphone connector as the issue... Nope still not working.

    2) My mp3 player is really jacked up on my Iphone 4. I did everything that Apple instructs you to do on the upgrade, including restoring, etc and now the music feature is useless. I hit play on any random song and I get no audio, no updateing status bar indicating that the song is playing, however in the upper right hand corner the play symbol indicator is active meaning its trying to play the song. Now I can go through 4000 of my songs and only a few of them will play, even they do play it seems like the entire database is messed up, I pick a song from an album and it plays another song. Several times I have picked songs and a totally different song comes up, but the title says the title, and the picture is of a different artist.

My girlfriend was about to update hers and then I told her what happened and now she refuses to do so. Thanks apple for helping out others with 3rd party testing. I have done previous IOS upgrades and they havent failed me until this new IOS 5 Update.

If you have 3rd party electronics that utilize the iphone connector I would urge you to use caution and wait until those 3rd party products have IOS5 support otherwise you are up a creek without a paddle.

The only problem I have from the new upgrade is a double text message alert. If I recieve a message (sms) when my phone is locked, and I do not open my phone to view the message, I will get a second alert of this exact same message within 3 to 5 minutes. When I view the message, only one message is shown in my inbox, so I know I'm not recieving double text messages. Just double alerts. No where else have I looked on this forum, or online, has any mention of this same problem. I am frustrated with the double alert. If I don't look at my message, I don't want another alert.

My ios5 upgrade on my iPhone 4 has been a pain!  First it refused to finish syncing, and wiped out all of my music.  I took it to the Genius Bar, and they wiped the phone, and set it up as a new phone, in the process deleting all of my app groupings, and a lot of phone call info such as recent calls, favorites, text listings etc.  I could live with all that, but after leaving the store discovered that the alphabetical bar on my phone contacts no longer works!  The only way to make a call is to endlessly scroll until you reach the number?  HELP!  I've restarted the phone 3 times to no avail.

Settings -> Notifications -> Messages -> Repeat Alert

Is it set to repeat alerts (repeats are spaced at 2 minute intervals)?  You can set repeats to never, once, twice, or 3, 5, or 10 times.

After upgrading my iphone 4 to ios5 I've noticed a considerable performance degradation.  Apps take much longer to launch, and overall everything is sluggish....reminds me of my old Droid!  Has anyone found anything that helps?

    Thanks.

I have an iPhone 4 and upgraded to iOS5.  I, too, have noticed a significant degradation in performance and battery life.  I've tried all the trick noted and still have poor battery life.  It takes significantly longer to launch apps and for my phone to respond when opening apps like e-mail or the phone.  I never used to have to wait but now I may have to wait up to 5 seconds for the phone to respond when I do open an app.  Any recommendations to resolve sluggish performance?

I haven't been back to the Genius bar yet.  I did try another Restore, and that didn't help.  Probably going to the Genius Bar again today.
