Thanks for the the links; some of it was a bit too technical, but I did get some worthwhile info out of it.
I think that the problem is finally cured. I found the original RAM sticks and put those back in. That allowed me to get Lion installed; then I put back in the new RAM and all seems to be fine now (>24 hours with no panics).
