Q: Compressor: can't even find "This Computer" in Batch

Hey everyone,

I literally have no idea what is wrong here. I have tried the compressor repair and all that stuff

What is the ideal or original setting that allow "This computer" at the very least to show up in Compressor. I doubt it is a qadministrator setup issue but heck who knows. After everytime you change qmaster or qadministrator settings do you have to restart your computer before going into compressor to see if it changed?

Can someone please list the procedure and the settings for qmaster and qadministrator (if needed) in order to get "this computer" listed in the cluster dropdown list after hitting submit

I never export from final cut pro- I simply do a export quicktime movie and then startup compressor and import videos in. I don't have the download discs anymore. Therefore is it worth it to just say screw it and download compressor 4 from the appstore because I not able to uninstall/reinstall ??

Final Cut Pro 7, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I find that while I do not need to restart the computer, I do need to reset the qmaster preferences after a restart.  I toggle sharing on and off a few times and that seems to do the trick.  But I've never seen a problem with "this computer."  You might try deleting your compressor preferences

No I already tried this and still nothing. This isn't a case of having compressor used to work, it has never worked because it hasn't ever even listed the computer as a cluster option.

Currently in my menu bar lists all 5 of my Qmaster services as "idle"

    my settings:

Share this computer as: services and cluster controller

Services: Share & Manage are checked for both Rendering and Compressor

Selected Services on: (2 instances) both are listed as: This Computer

I doubt that compressor 4 is going to work any better than compressor 3.

Try creating a new account in system preferences:  accounts

Do you have any system hacks or "utilities" installed?  Seems like something very basic on the OS level might be screwed up here.

I'd consider a complete boot drive wipe and reinstall of OS and apps.   But first, you might run thru these steps

Alright, I checked out all of your suggestion and trashed pref/repaired programs and all that in the order listed. As it stands, all programs have been reset to orginal default settings and cache and preferences have been trashed. for all fcp studio programs.

    Still no This Computer listed.

I agree that it is an OS or disk ultilities problem. When my 10.6 OS was installed at Best Buy on my new hard Drive (this happened before fcp studio software was installed) they ended up not installing the additional software disc.

EX) As a result I actually wasn't given quicktime pro automatically when I installed the fcp software discs because quicktime 7 wasn't even in my disk utilities to begin with. So I had to call apple to get the download for qt7 to ulitize the qt- pro software I ended up having to buy...

Thus, I assume that other essential software was also left out as well which is causing the compressor program.

I don't have the install disks for 10.6 OS or the fcp7 package. Thus I assume the only new option is to now download Lion OS to start my Disk Utilities ect. off on the right basis. If that still doesn't work than I will have to then buy compressor 4

IS THIS A BAD IDEA IN TERMS OF LION OS AND FCP7 COMPATIBLITY?! IF AFTER DOWNLOADING LION OS AND COMPRESSOR STILL DOESN'T WORK, IS IT A BAD IDEA TO HAVE BOTH COMPRESSOR 3 AND 4 ON MY DRIVE?!

    HELP

GO BACK TO BEST BUY AND RAISE SOME HEL^.  If you bought your computer there, they should have included the OS install disks.  Something doesn't make sense.

haha well this is a macbook pro that I bought 3 years ago- it's the last version before the unibody design. Hard drive ended up crashing last year and thats the process they used to replace it. So they put the new harddrive in with the newest os of 10.6  (this model was purchased with 10.5 os discs) and they didn't give me the 10.6 discs along with my new frankenstien computer. The extended warranty is now over.

Months later I downloaded fcp7 package from my employer who I am no longer with. Since then I have noticed the issue with Quicktime 7 and now the compressor issue.

So that's where I am at: a broken compressor with no fcp or mac 10.6 os discs to do unistall/reinstalls....So that's where I figure I should just do these app store purchases.

    Dear Mike,

Great news, my Compressor is now working! I have fcp7 and it turns out that because I had all of the apps taken out of my apps folder and put in a shortcut folder listed under the Places tab in Finder, qmaster in the preferences pane was not communicating with compressor.

I called apple about and found out about this. Also, it was not allowing me to get the latest update of 7.0.3

So now I am all up to date with fcp7 and I even setup a quickcluster with qmaster to utilize more processor power for compressor.

    Victory!
