I've had to go through three iPhone 4's in the last year. One almost every three months until it was out of warranty. Each time the screen would go black and no hard restart or reinstallation would revive it. Apple couldn't offer me a replacement for my recent one because it was out of warranty and instead the genius bar installed the latest iOS 5 on my iPhone 4.

After the iOS 5 was installed, it worked for less than an hour before it went black on me again. I tried reinstalling the iOS 5 on my own and it worked for a bit, EXCEPT it went black again but this time the phone is actually still running. I can swipe and unlock the phone even on a black screen but I can't see what I'm doing.

Anybody else have a similar problem?

Upgraded my iPhone 4 to the new iOS5 and have had nothing but trouble.  I have tried turning everything I can think of off, but my phone is still acting very sluggish.  Problems:

    1.  When typing in my security code, sometimes the screen will act frozen for several seconds.

    2.  When I click a contact to text someone, then it will take 10+ seconds before the message screen will appear.  (I get the happy white screen with the blue bar at the top to view while waiting).

    3.  My photo files are huge, but I never had a delay in opening the files prior to iOS 5.  Now, it takes over 20 seconds to pull up.  And, many times it goes to the home screen without ever opening the file.

    4.  Twitter is now hit or miss.  I can click on the icon and it will either take 15+ seconds to load or it will go back to the home screen.

5   Facebook---ROFL.  That's a good one.  It was so slow that I finally deleted the app.  It was running faster using the browser.

    6.  The "Settings" icon is also running like twitter.  Sometimes it goes into the settings and sometimes it bounces back to the home screen.

Basically, if it was my home computer, then I would say it was running low on RAM memory.  But, I know nothing about Apple's system, so I don't know what is causing this craziness.

And, for those in the know, I have all my location services turned off.  Also, I deleted my iCloud account.  I have virtually everything turned off that I can think of and it's still running slower than the first generation android that I used to have before purchasing the iPhone.

Any suggestions???  (Besides, throwing it away).

Maybe people should add which version iPhone 4 they have?  CDMA (Verizon) or GSM?

    Ok Understood.

    1. Are you jailbroken or not.

If not you have to offload the memory which is blocked off by open programs.

    Get Memstatus and use it.

If Jailbroken you need to get Winterboard loaded which will aid in mem management

iOS5 runs pretty well on the iPhone 4. Although the 4 has a slower processor to the 4S, it has exactly the same amount of RAM so multitasking performance is very very similar. The iPhone 3G had half the amount of RAM as the 3GS and a quarter the iPhone 4 which is one of the big reasons it had so many problems using iOS4.

I used all of the iOS5 betas so used the 4 with v5 for a long period of around 2-3 months.

So, for the OS only, go for it. The new notifications are a big improvement.

However, some 3rd party apps still have little bugs and issues on iOS5. They're being updated all of the time. If there are apps that you particularly care about and use regularly, I suggest you look at recent reviews on the Apple App Store to check they work fine and have no big problems with iOS5.

For me, all my key apps are now fine on iOS5.

Sidenote: While the iPhone 4 runs fine with iOS5, I'm finding multitasking frustrating on the original iPad with sporadic system slowdowns. I suspect it's because the original iPad has half the amount of RAM as the iPhone 4 and 4S...

My phone is a Verizon iPhone 4 (not s).  It is not jailbroken.  All apps are up-to-date.  (no guarantee that the app companies have actually updated their software, though)

I started out Ok..lost a few apps in the upgrade but no biggie. Used apps no problem. So I connect to car radio and use iheartradio often and it buffers more than usual and to get it back I have to disconect and restart.

Now I'm noticing my home button is unresponsive.and a lot of apps are slow. I've rebooted and dunno. Short of tossing it out the window of a moving car I don't know what to do.

Load mem status Check your free memory or perform a cleaning of the memory and see how it works. I am confident it will help

    Ran into my first problem...

    Camera photo filenames.

I offload my photos to my home computer on a regular basis. I presume I had no photos on my iPhone when I did the upgrade. Today I downloaded the photos from my iPhone and found the filenames (in iPhone) had been reset and my first picture is again IMG_0012.JPG

So now the question again, is there a way to set the filename group on the iPhone? I say again because I've looked for this answer before since we have 3 iPhones in the house. Having 3 cameras that all started at IMG_0012 is a logistic nightmare...

I loaded Mem Status and I've noticed that when I'm having problems, the free memory is down to about 3%, but it doesn't tell me what programs are using the memory.  I can look at the process, but they don't seem to be any different than when I have 73+% available and they don't specify which is using the most memory.

I have an iPhone 4 (GSM, AT&T) and an iPad 1 - neither are jailbroken, and both are running terribly SLOW on IOS 5, after about a week since the update.

I haven't added anything unusual, I use a task-killer/memory-freeing program, and have even reset the devices, but it's becoming excrutiating.

This needs to get fixed, like yesterday - both of these are used primarily as work/business devices, and it's making life difficult.

FYI  Apple released iOS 5.0.1 Software Update yesterday...

According to Apple's release notes, iOS 5.0.1 resolves four main issues: fixes bugs affecting battery life; adds multitasking gestures for original iPad; resolves bugs with documents in the cloud; and improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation.

I too am having problems since IOS5, my camera shutter mostly does not oPen when the app is opened and when it does you may or may not be able to take a pic, most of the time the pic is out of focus and has purple lines down it.

The home button only responds 60% of the time and when i try to open any torch app it is unreliable at best and mostly doesnt work.

Lastly, the hp print app does still work but it takes about 20 mins to print an a5 pic and reports connection problems all the while it prints.

If Apple or anyone has any solutions then please post your suggestions, this is my primary phone and i switched from regular smart phones because the iphone worked faultlessly, not so now !

My phone is an iphone 4, 18 months old on t-mobile and is not jailbroken ect.

    PLEASE HELP !
