You can allow Siri access to your messages, even with the Passcode on. Just go to settings and under General>Passcode Lock select "on" for Allow access to Siri when locked with a passcode.
I don't have any problems. Siri even asks me if I want to reply or read it again.

I do not have a passcode lock enabled, the only lock i have enabled is the Auto-Lock, this Auto-lock will not let Siri read me my messages. Its starting to confise me now

Have you actually got any new messages? Siri will only read unread messages to you.
Currently Being ModeratedOct 21, 2011 7:31 AM (in response to MucSteve)
Yeah i have new messages, Siri even says reading message from... then it goes blank then asks if i want to reply to the message but its not actually read out the message.
Im sure its nothing i am doing as i dont have a passcode enabled lock on the phone the only lock i have is the auto lock but i have to unlock this 1st then ask Siri to read the message which is pointless as i may as well just read it myself

MucSteve, I totally agree with you.
Just like the guy jogging & the other guy driving.
This is what I expect Siri to do for me.
If you have the passcode enabled, your phone assumes it's to prevent people gaining unauthorised access to your phone. Bypassing that security and allowing anyone to get access to your messages via Siri doesn't make sense. On the other hand, by selecting to display messages on the lock screen, you yourself are making a conscious decision to bypass the security, so it makes sense that Siri can then read back the message to you.
The point of having Siri read you something that is already on the lock screen is that you don't have to take the phone out of your pocket (if, like me, you've got a headset with a microphone) or, if you're driving, you don't have to take your eyes off the road!

Really good info James. This is a way around the problem for now. Honestly I hate having my text message open for eyes to see whenever I recieve one. Ideally I think everyone would want Siri to read the message with preview messages disabled. Hopefully they will fix this because I believe it is a bug. Thanks again.

I get a 50/50 success rate with Siri. Sometimes 'she' will read the new text and sometimes not. If my phone is locked, Siri prompts me that I need to unlock my phone in order to read the message. Again, as someone else pointed out, Siri is still beta.
For a kick, ask Siri to "Beam me up" you'll get different results :)

It is a security thing because think about it for a second.. The purpose of locking your phone is so someone else doesnt have access to it. If anyone could open up siri from a lock screen and access all of your texts and everything without unlocking in the phone it would be a serious security issue! Turning on message preview fixes it because you already have it set to show up on the screen so siri isnt reading anything that anyone cant already see on the lock screen if that makes sense.
Its not a big issue, just apple trying to keep your information safe! Relax people!

Thanks for the tip !
If I had to choose, I'd prefer disabling the text preview and having access to SIRI while iphone is locked....
But I can understand th security matter...

I don't think it's a security thing. For me, if the phone is locked requiring a password to get in, Siri will tell me I have a new message. When I ask her to read it, she says I have to unlock my phone first. However, when I unlock my phone, she still doesn't read it - just says you can reply or read it again. I have the same problem whether the phone is locked or unlocked (i.e., not needing the password). One or two times out of ten she'll read the message - I haven't worked out what the difference is yet.

I understand its a security issue, APPLE should keep the feature but have you say a Pass Phrase/or word to read text messages out loud, as opposed to unlocking the phone by typing in your passcode (while driving). Either way unlocked or not, Siri still cant read my text messages, all I get is "read again, or reply"...

fix for this if you have passcode lock on and dont want preview enabled:
I got Siri to read my text msgs even with my lock screen on. I went into "settings/notifications/messages" I turned "preview" ON, but I turned "view in lock screen" OFF.

I have my preview on and my view in lock screen off, but I do have a passcode due to my e-mail. I haven't tried with everything on yet but I do not want my message popping up on my screen to be honest. So is there a way siri will read my text while still having a passcode and not popping up on my screen?

DKEIL - yes, I think Siri will read texts to you in that configuration. You will need to set the Settings>Notifications>Messages>Alert Style option to "None" if you don't want anything popping up on the screen at all. Good luck.
