Q: Apple ID verification link doesn't work—what now?

My Apple ID was accepted for Facetime purchase and the app was installed on my iMac, but when I tried to use it I got a message that my e-mail needed to be verified. I've tried three times unsuccessfully, and I'm stuck in a Catch 22 loop.

The e-mail arrives right away, but the URL embedded in "Verify Now" won't work and mousing over it brings up the message: "The URL is not syntactically valid." I tried pasting the code into my browser, but then I got back: "Your request could not be completed. We apologize but we are unable to verify the link you are using to access this page."

I suspect the code is broken somehow because it starts with a quotation mark but doesn't end with one. But I haven't figured out any fix for it.

I just tried and failed again, on the remote chance that passage of time would make any difference. I'm still hoping for a Correct Answer here! Helpful Answers welcomed, too.

Apple seriously needs to fire the whole Apple ID management team. This scheme is a major clusterf*ck.

It's clear I'm not the only Apple customer having trouble with this procedure! Is it true that there's an alternative way to verify my e-mail address—alternative to clicking on a link that doesn't work for me? Is there someone to whom I should send some code or further explain what I see on my end?

After days of spinning my wheels and getting no help from Apple, my problem turned out to be that in my two Apple IDs, one of them used the other's primary email address as its alternate email address. Apparently Apple can't detect this and can't handle this.

So the solution for me was to delete that alternate email address and make each Apple ID have only a single primary address.

Of course the solution EVERYONE wants is to merge all of your Apple IDs into a single entity and have apple enforce a single Apple ID per user. The last thing I need is to have to remember which one I used for iTunes, which one for iCloud, which on for the developer program, which one for iChat, etc., etc., etc.

I posted on Nov. 5 about my problem with the e-mail verification process.

Well, tonight I succeeded with a workaround. Instead of trying to reply or copy the URL from Apple's message in my Eudora e-mail app, I requested a new verification e-mail and then opened it in my ISP's web e-mail feature. No problem answering it from there and completing the process. So, I conclude Apple doesn't like Eudora and probably other e-mail readers, too. Anyway, I'm now able to use iTunes again, and I'm finally using my new FaceTime. Solved in less than one month!

Thanks for the tip. I also could not access the link as it was missing in the text of the e-mail. I then forwarded the e-mail to my work e-mail and still have the same problem - no link appears. I am not familiar with other e-mail programs available on my computer. I essentially need to set-up another e-mail account and see if that works, correct?

This actually is a simple issue to resolve, all you need to do is forward the verification email to a different email account that does not have such high security settings such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc... and click on the verification link from there.

Keep in mind some email providers will scamble the link when forwarding as well (usually government emails). So if this doesn't work you may need to change your email address associated with your AppleID by visiting id.apple.com and singing in to manage your account.

This issue is caused by your e-mail provider, not Apple. Certain e-mail providers choose to block links from opening that they detect as a security threat. Some of the more secure accounts such as work email, school email, etc... have such high security settings that they block any links that would allow you to change account information... including AppleID. Apple has no control over this, if you want to see it changed contact your e-mail provider.

    I'll keep it short.

I opened the email on an email client (Mozilla Thunderbird) and that fixed the problem.

Hope you have the same results...
