Hi all,

I decided to rent The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. For some reason there was a network error and it never downloaded. I went on my trip, noticed it was not there and figured ok I'll take care of it when I get back.

Of course things got busy and I never did... The rental period expired but the download is still in my iTunes trying over and over... It keeps giving error 5102.

I've tried deleting it, it just keeps showing back up. Any ideas on how I can remove it so it doesn't keep trying to complete the download?

I think if you go to ~/music/itunes/itunes music/downloads you should see the file there. Drag it to trash and it should be gone.

Have you tried this? I am having the same problem but can't get the download to complete so I view the film. Any thoughts?

I am having the exact same problem. Have you figured it out yet? What's interesting is that not every movie I rent keeps coming back like that, but I have three that keep trying to load months after I rented them. I tried to watch them again but it won't let me do that, so it's just loading useless data.

I tried the solution that the other reply suggested to no avail. Let me know if you figure it out.

I'm sorry I haven't found a solution. Looked all over. Hoping to help push this to attention for someone to answer. I've deleted it manually from the iTunes folder, but it reads in my account I guess and tries to download. (I never finished the download, so I think the account thinks it was never completed.

Same problem here. I get an error 5102 on a movie rental. I have rent it on my old MacBook and iTunes on my new MacBook Pro (same iTunes-Account) downloads it while the rental period is expired.

I've also tried to remove the file and the download item but iTunes keeps downloading it on and on.

Is this a bug? Has anyone tried to contact Apple on that issue?

I had the same problem. I ended up going to the iTunes support site and sending an e-mail to support. Here is the link to the e-mail page <http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html?form=download&topic=Downloadi ng%20iTunes%20Store%20Purchases&subtopic=Download%20errors>.
I got a response back that evening saying that they fixed my problem. Here's a copy of the response:

    Hi Alan,

My name is Mike, an Apple Advisor from Charlotte, NC and I will be happy to assist you today. I understand that you have been receiving error 5102 while trying to remove The Soloist from your downloads. That was a great movie, Jamie Foxx was excellent, but I digress.

I have some good news for you. At this time, I have removed the content from your downloads, so it should not show up anymore.

I hope that this fully resolves your issue and you are able to continue to enjoy your iTunes experience. If you have any future issues, please remember that we are just an e-mail away.

    Sincerely,

    Mike

Is it possible you rented the movie on one computer and resumed the download on another? This was the source of my problem. Rentals can only be played on one device. When I allowed the movies to fully download on the original device, they vanished from my download queue on all other devices.

Delete the partial (and corrupted) download data from your iTunes Music/Downloads folder and retry the download in iTunes. It will then be able to finish successfully.

This is a problem with iTunes that apple has never fixed.  I have the same problem as everyone else in this forum and I have had it for a long time.  I have requested that five movies be taken out of my download que because I get a 5102 error everytime I try to download. The problem is I CANNOT SUCCESSFULLY DELETE THEM. Everytime I buy and download a song, these useless movies try to download AND FAIL.

This has happened over three different versions of iTunes and over a period going back to 2009.  I no longer order movies from iTunes (Netflix and Amazon work just fine).  In fact, I got so bent out of shape trying to talk to a real, live human being about this problem (it isn't possible to make a complaint about iTunes store purchases - you are shunted off into the big bit bucket in the sky) i sold my Macs and built Windows machines. So much for shadow support!

Here we are, years after the original post, and Apple still hasn't fixed this.  Pathetic.

Yep, so this is a problem. I just email Apple via their "express lane" we'll see if they end up resolving the problem. It has been a problem for a while. And it seems like a long standing bug that just hasn't gotten to be a big enough problem for enough people.

I've been having the same problem and today spoke with an Apple rep by phone.  He wasn't able to help me although he did try.  So, I went back into iTunes and when I opened it up, the movie downloads were doing their usual thing.  I paused each one of them and then right clicked on one at a time and was able to delete the download.  I then went into the Rentals area under Library in iTunes and right clicked on the thumbnail photo icon of the movie and was able to delete each one.

I then signed out of iTunes and started it up again.  The movies were no longer trying to download.  I also before doing all of this went into my music file where iTunes is and deleted the movies from there.

Anyway, I don't know what will happen when I rent another movie because this all seems to come about because the original rental doesn't fully download even though I can watch it completely.  We'll have to see.  For now the problem seems to be gone.

    Hope this might help.
