Let me say the paperclip worked in like 1 minute.  I tilted and my husband fished it out.  I almost began to cry because it was my Disney Pictures...  All is good now

I cant believe it happened to me....     The clip did not work and i was worry to damaged something inside.....

I used a business card wrapped it in sticky tape and voila after inserted the sd card came out!   I am going to seal the slot so it does not happen again!  goo luck to all of you when it happens!

Your cardboard solution worked like a charm.  Like that you gave such detailed specs.  Thanks.

A business card with double-sided tape did the trick for me.  I had a paperclip in there but felt nervous after it caught a few times on who knows what.  This is a design flaw from Apple (not taking anything away from the overall design; the rest of the iMac is fantastic).  I've meanwhile covered the DVD slot with scotch tape to prevent this from happening again.

    Paperclip works a charm

This just happened me today. I stuck my sd card in the wrong slot because it was dark and I wasn't paying attention. I panicked.

I googled it and came to this board. Thank goodness I did!!! I didn't have a paperclip so I used a bobby pin. I bent it into an L shape but couldn't get it out. I tipped the mac completely on it's side and got it out in 10 seconds.

    Thank you!

It's good to know I'm not the only one though !

Adding my thanks!  I felt like a complete idiot when I did this.  I panicked.  I got angry with myself.  I was imagining how much it was going to cost to replace the optical drive after I lugged this thing down to the Apple Store. Then I took a deep breath and came to the Apple Communities and saw I was in great company and there was hope!

I am not exaggerating when I say it took me longer to quit all my open programs and shut down then it did to fish out the SD card.  We used a 5 X 7 index card folded over and cut out in the L-shape.  We slipped it in the slot at the top and as far back as it would go, slid it down the length of the drive, and pulled slowly.  Out popped the SD card!

    Thanks so much!!!

I did the same thing last night Yet it is proving a lot more difficult for me to get the darn thing out for some reason! I've tried the paper clip and hair grip suggestions, plus the sticky tape on business card. The SD card cannot be seen (it has gone past the little flap bit of the CD drive and I think that's what's stopping it from coming back out of there). I can feel it with a hair grip but I've been fishing around inside for a while and it won't budge, I really don't want to do any damage.

I rang up Apple and they said I would have to take my iMac for a service so they can assess the damage and get the thing out. This will NOT be covered by my Apple Care which I'm a little annoyed at. Does anyone have any idea of the costs I'm looking at if I take this option? (UK)

I'm tempted to have another go, as the SD card has some pretty important stuff on

If anyone can help, it would be much appreciated!

Stephatron, did you tip your Mac almost on its side while trying to fish out?  Tip on its side and then stick the paperclip or bobby in to fish out. You may need two people as my monitor is a bit heavy.

This might be obvious...but are you turning your mac over on it's side? When it happened to me, my sd card was all the way in. I used a bobby pin and couldn't even feel the card. I tried but it wouldn't come out. Then, I tipped the mac over, stuck the bobby pin in until it couldn't go in any further and slowly slid(and came up) the bobby pin to the other side of the dvd slot.

    It came right out...

Good luck..hope you don't have to take your mac in.

I didn't have any luck with a paper clip, but I did with a specially-shaped bit of card.  Picture here:

I didn't need to turn the machine on its side, in may case...

Hope one of these works for you!

By turning it on it's side, can you explain a little further (may sound silly but I don't want to lodge it more in there!). I tried facing my Mac screen down onto my bed and tried with the clip again, it did come to the edge but only to a certain point, it didn't want to come out!
