Q: iPod/Music App in iOS5 not sorting artist list alphabetically

Hello.

I've got what it seems to be an annoying bug from the new Music App/iPod in iOS5. It simply sorts my artists out of alphabetical order on the artist dashboard. I tried to use the option "group by album artist" on and off and it seems to have no effect on that issue.

I also found a way to fix it temporally, erasing all music data, and resyncing all the playlists/selected albums. But whenever I sync again to add a new album or playlist, it messes up with the alphabetical order again. Anyone with the same problem? Is there a bug fix, workaround?

I got some Screenshots of the problem taking place, attached below.

Is it playing the right music? (iPhone 4 / iOS5)

Mine does not play some of the musics and others just change the names. It shows that is playing something that is not, it is playing a diferent music. I choose one music, it shows the name of it on scrren but plays another.

I guess we should wait until Apple fix it for the next upgrade... I hope so.

I was having the same "problem" but apparently it's a new feature that lets you group by album artist. To disable it, go to Settings > Music, and turn off the "Group by Album Artist" toggle, then sync your device and it should go back to normal.

I have the same problem, I have tried disabling the group by artist option, and resyncing the ipod, nothing changes. It's not a massive issue because the songs are still all there, it just makes finding artists a lot harder!

    It is working now.

I had to start all my lists from the beggining. In iTune I deleted them and created again. It is working fine now.

I suggest you guys do the same. "Remove" all music from your iPhone, create the lists again in iTunes and sincronize. A lot of work... but it worked for me.

Yes, Nelsinho. But I even specified that this process was already being done by me. To temporally fix it, I wiped out all music and vids, and resynced again, it worked, but whenever I need to add something new, it goes all messy again.

I'm going to restore the firmware from scratch again. This issue really annoys me.

I have the same problem, I called apple about it. they recommended that I killed the music on the device and then remove the .itl file. after completing those steps to no avail decided to remove the music from the device and then reinstall itunes as this was the next step according to the apple technician. nada. I was replacing my laptop that I sync with anyway so I moved the music to my new pc and re-added all music to itunes. before syncing I /completly/ wiped my device! synced for the first time everything went well. added additional music and viola *Problem Happen*! I know this isnt really that big of an issue but c'mon I thought that updating to 5.01 last night would help but no joy there either! hopfully some of you have better luck than I did, I will be calling apple today I guess. BTW, does anyone know where the indexing for the artist lists happen? is it in itunes or on the device itself. that may help in determining where the problem is actually created.

Thanks for all the effort, animal397: I would call them if they had a support number around here.

I have the same problem: all of the artists on my iphone 4s (with ios 5.01) are still not in alphabetical order. I called apple a few days ago and they said that a new update will fix this. Mabe they weren't talking about 5.01, but about the next update *fingers crossed*

Exact same problem here -- just wanted to add another vote for "totally messed up music sorting on my iPhone, even under iOS 5.0.1" in case Apple wants to fix this issue.

Just piping in to say that I have the same problem with my 4S. At first it seemed that upgrading to 5.0.1 resolved it, but no, it's happening again. I did a full restore last night -- no quick chore with a 64GB unit -- and it fixed it only temporarily.

I should say that a lot of what is in my music library is indexed with non-Latin characters, with order maintained with the "Sort Artist" field, but it is not by any means only these artists that are out of order.

It's definitely not an "Album Artist" issue in my case.

I don't agree that this isn't that big of an issue. Alphabetical order seems pretty basic. I shouldn't have to use Spotlight to find Devo because it's listed in "W".
