I notice that in the German localization, "Master" is (literally translated) "Original" and "Version" is "Working Copy".

This seems _much_ more sensible than "Master" and "Version" -- imho, changing to the German literal translations would blow away 40% of the fog in which beginners routinely lose their way.

Thoughts?

What's the German localization of "Project"?  (Added:  "Projekt".  Ah well ... no reason to wear that raincoat in this storm.)

You'll be disappointed: The german localization word for "project" is "Projekt".

I agree with your other suggestions, but "version"and "master" are only minor annoyances, the biggest mistake IMHO is the word "project"

Let's found a working group and try to convince Apple to change the terminology for "project" to "shoot".

wer hat eine halb-gute Deutsche Name.

In my Aperture Library the projects are named "Filmrolle" (I don't know the english word, a roll of transparencies?), a rather old fashioned name from the time I took pictures with a non-digital camera.

    All good suggestions.

I favour the word container (or maybe collection)

And with the word "album" as it is right now I am quite happy.

What I am looking for is a new word for "project" that shows that "projects" are containers of the basic objects.

Any new word for "album" should reflect that albums define relations between images or reflect different views  or uses of the basic items.

"Collection" or "Box" or "Bucket" (!!!) would all work - in principle.

It still won't sort out the preponderance of "do first and learn about it later" (or perhaps "I couldn't be bothered learning about it, and it's *your* fault") problems, though.

Sounds a bit grumpy... oh well.  Just got back from assignment overseas and I think I'm a bit tired.

Perhaps "Bucket" (or "Box" ) would be best - both are containers for arbitrary sets of items with no particular ordering or constraints, "Collection" might imply that the items in the container have been picked according to some selection rule, and that is what albums should be used for.

But I am not really sure about all these linguistic interpretations since english is not my mother tongue.

Whatever we may suggest, Apple will only be happy with it, if it fits in with a nice metaphor, like the "Desktop" metaphor for the "Finder" or like "film roll" in early iPhoto. So what does a professional photographer call the set of pictures sitting on a card in the camera?

I have to think about it.

Both suggestions are far better than the current name "project".

To me "Master album" sounds better than "Home album" - less sedate or conventional. But I am concerned a little bit about possible confusions, since the word "Master" already is taken in Aperture, and the "Master album" will be the container of masters and versions.

    working group

I am quite willing; let us wait and see first, if there is some support from this forum, then we need to discuss a strategy, but not in this public forum, I've put a link to my home page on my profile, if you want to contact me off-line.
