Other than deauthorize all, I've tried the steps above without success.
I'm going to see if other threads have been posted about this and see if there is any resolution and maybe I'll see if Apple store geniuses can take a look...
It is possible that the policy changed to disallow multiple iPads from viewing the same TV show but I would be very surprised to see that.
I had originally downloaded the TV shows on iTunes on my Windows laptop, then synced it to my wife's iPad, then copied the files to my MacBook Air and then synced to my iPad from the air... All four devices have the same store ID and authorization...
I've done this many times without problems but clearly something changed lately

Same problem here. iPad 1 and 2 both on updated iOS 5.0.1 (same issue on 5.0), updated iTunes 10.5. Heck, it evens happens to my iPhone 3GS with 5.0.1.
Bought cars 2 for the kids and can't get it on any device. Has no problem playing on the MacPro or Apple TV. All the other movies, music, photos etc, no problem. Deauthorize and authorize all computers many times, no difference.
Side note, problem has surfaced since the updates to ios 5 version all and maybe iCloud. All machines and devices using same apple id/iTunes store account.
Also had to upgrade iOS on all devices via wifi because iTunes kept giving me a corrupted error message.
I have been having the same problem and have managed to get movies to work on ipad and iphone.
What i did was search computer for film name and then right clicked on film, then changed the film extension name from m4v to mp4.
Then i clicked on movies in itunes and deleted the movie in question, then i clicked "add to library" at top of page and added the movie that i changed the file extension of.
Once it was back in the itunes library i clicked to sync movie to ipad and voila SUCCESS.

Yes, I did the same thing and it worked.
- Rename all m4v episode files to be mp4
- Remove and re-add the files to the iTunes library
- Sync with the iPad now works
One thing I noticed is that during sync when the files were in M4V form, iTunes was trying to connect to the iTunes store before syncing them. With the MP4 files, it seems to sync them directly without checking the store on the items.
All of this might be related to recent iTunes cloud changes ... Perhaps some bugs introduced due to iTunes Match.

I have tried this tip as I am having the same problem - I renamed the files from .m4v to .mp4. I am now able to sync the videos to my iPad and everything looks fine - metadata, chapters, etc. However, when I go to play the movie, I get an error message that says "Error, cannot play movie".
Did you run into this as well? If so, how did you get around it?
I've had the same problem: Movies and TV shows purchased recently from iTunes would play on AppleTV, but would not sync to my iPad. I followed the instructions to force iTunes to open in 32 bit mode, and all of a sudden, these files are now syncing to my iPad as intended. Bizarre, but it worked.
I was having problems syncing a few purchased TV shows to my iPhone (but not all). Here's what worked for me:
- Quit iTunes and any other open applications until only Finder is open.
- Choose Go > Go to Folder.
- Type/Users/Shared/SC Infoand click Go.
- If Finder is not already set to column view, set it by choosing View > as Columns.
- Select the SC Info folder and move it to the Trash by choosing File > Move to Trash.
- Restart the computer and open iTunes.
- Authorize your computer to play your purchases. Note: If you have multiple accounts you will need to authorize your computer for each account. For more information on how to authorize your computer, see this article.
The steps outlined by iThinkDifferentToo worked for me. I had all the same symptoms and tried all the other solutions (deauthorize, reauthorize, etc...) but it didn't work. Then tried deleting the SC Info folder. I emptied the trash but did not restart my iMac. When I reconnected the iPad it asked me to authorize the ids again and then the movies synced.
