Having some serious problems with LOGIC PRO.

Even with A/D converter INPUT MIX at zero AND the channel INPUT at zero AND the fader in Logic to zero I’m getting peak signal from the drum kit!

Plus perpetual clipping distortion on guitar, even with different mics, cables, channels and all peak signal at -12dB and lower.

Plus, after setting my levels can also Logic reset my fader levels for recording to zero!

I'm totally stumped and frustrated. A solution would really help, thanks.

FYI - A/D converter: TASCAM U-1800, Mics: SM57A and Sm58.

Not familiar with the Tascam, But you don't mention the outputs. Line out ? Monitor out ? and at what levels ? Check that. Come out of the line output turned all the way down, And increase it until you peak at -6db in your channel strip. With a new recording.

Thans for your reply, but I don't see what relevance the monitor levels have on clipping in the tracks. I monitor at low levels, FWIW.

Maybe I didn't explain that clearly, but the two issues are:

    1. Audible clipping on any guitar tracks at any input volume using any mic and cable.

    2. Kit clipping when all inputs (main input, channel input and even fader) are at zero. Which seems insane. How can signal get to tracks via zero input?

Those input knobs are gain. Faders in logic dont control input. how are you coming out of the tascam in to logic. Are these tracks already recorded ?

Just direct with cans (Sennheisers). I've tried various pairs and it's not bad cans that are the problem.

Huh ? How is the signal getting from the Tascam in to a logic track

You might want to look here

check your input and outputs there

Cheers. I'll have to follow your advice later this week, as am not in the studio. Will get back to you when I do.

Just to be clear... with a peak signal at -12db you're still getting distortion in the audio?

If so go to Logic's preferences/Audio  and (for now) set the System I/O buffer to 256.

I'm assuming the Tascam has has a control panel or software applet. Set the Tascam to record at 44.1kHz at 24-bit. Make sure the settings in Logic are the same. Tascam clock should be set to internal

Also, go into Utilities/Audio/MIDI setup and make sure all of the audio settings reference the built-in audio.

You really don't want the Mac accessing the hardware that Logic is using at this point.

    BUffer's already at 256.

    Tascam's already set at 24bit.

    Mac audio points towards Tascam.

Ok, point all Mac audio at Built-in for now.

What sample rate are you running.

I took a look at the Tascam unit, pretty nice for the price, not doing you much good right now.

I can't get a handle on the clipping... whether it's actual audio overload clipping or garbled digital distortion like a bad USB connection, or an overload of the USB bus.

Phantom power is off of cource.

    24 bit, buffer at 256.

I've tried each USB port on my macbook and swapped out the USB cables for each recording session. Still getting that nasty distortion.

    Yes, but what sample rate... 44.1,   48,   88.2,   96?

Hey. Thanks for the quick response.

It's at the - what I imagine to be default - setting: 44.1 kHz.
