Q: New Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP.

I got a new Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP that worked fine in SL.  Is it not compatible?  Is it really a PowerPC program???  I'm a videographer and rely on this software and to spend $300 to continue to use it after spending a lot more for this software 4 years ago!  Tell me this is not the case and there is a solution to installing FCP.

If it is a PPC version, I'm afraid it won't work with Lion. You can always return to Snow Leopard from your clone or Time Machine backup until you can afford to migrate to FCPX.

This could be the same problem I faced with FCE - FCE itself will run under Lion; however, the installer is PPC, so it would not install on my partition with a clean Lion install. So, if FCP will run (check on your SL disk to see if it is a PPC app or universal/Intel), this is what I did to solve it:

I have a working and up to date Snow Leopard partition with FCE.

    I copied these instructions:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38198?viewlocale=en_US

(these are for FCE, but they may/should also work for FCP)

I then copied over every single file from my SL partition to the Lion partition and placed them in the exact same spots.

    Restarted. And: it worked!

How to run FCP 6 (FCS 2) under Lion.

The installer for FCP 6 (FCS 2) is a PPC app. The Programs themselves are Intel. If your trying to install FCP 6 (FCS 2) this work-around will work...

First you need to install Rosetta from your Snow Leopard OS installation disc:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html

After doing that you can install FCP 6 (FCS 2). Remember, after installing FCP 6 (FCS 2) you need to apply the updates. This has been discuss many times in the Final Cut Studio forum.

If your trying to install FCP version 5.1 (FCS 1) (a PPC app) and below your out of luck....

Out of curiosity: you can install Rosetta on a Mac with Lion pre-installed?

(FWIW, the Rosetta website link in that article no longer works - it leads to an ad for the new MBA)

As far as I know it works with pre-installed Lion.

The link I provided tells how to install Rosetta... As for the link at the bottom of that page, that is not relevant.

Well, I just put it to the test:

Booted into one of my Lion clones. Inserted Install disk. Clicked on Optional Installs and chose Rosetta.

Got this window once it was done:

    Screen Shot 2011-11-15 at 11.40.19 AM.png

So far, it appeared as though it would work. Restarted and tried to launch Appleworks - got this:

    Screen Shot 2011-11-15 at 11.41.12 AM.png

So, it appears that even though you may be able to get Rosetta installed, it will have no effect on being able to run a PPC application.

Will now wipe the clone and put back a fresh (and clean) clone....

I just posted a question there; it shouldn't matter which app one tries to run, should it? PPC is PPC - or not? I tried to launch AW 6; launching a PPC installer would have the same result I would imagine since both are PPC apps.

Of course I may be wrong, but until I hear from someone who has actually done it and it was successful, my result stands.

I ran my test this afternoon:

Used a fresh install of Lion 10.7; updated to 10.7.2. Installed Rosetta from the SL install disk (using Optional Installs > Rosetta).  Then I inserted disk 1 for FCE; after entering registration number, etc. install proceeded without a hitch. Chose not to install LiveType or Soundtrack (because this partition was going to get wiped after the test). When finished, I launched FCE and it worked. I did not spend much time there, but the basics I tried worked.

I also - again - tried Appleworks 6 by copying it over. Would not start with an error message re. PPC apps.

My take on this is: if the app is universal/Intel, it'll work even if the installer is PPC as long as you can install Rosetta from the SL install disk. If the app is PPC only (like AW), it won't.

Thank you everyone for your help and you saved me a lot of stress!  It worked like a charm and no problems.  I look forward to continuing my work until I muster enough to upgrade to the the new one.

Does anyone know whether you can install Rosetta onto Lion without any Snow Leopard installation disks? I am thinking of getting a MBP quad-core with Lion and want to install my FCP6. It seems this might be possible but not without installing Rosetta. However, without SNL install disks I wonder how this can be done... Any ideas???

Not that i know of; in the "old days", there used to be a download available, but since support was discontinued, I have not been able to find it. I was going to suggest to buy a retail SL disk - which would be a lot cheaper than a current FC version - but then realized that you won't be able to use it on a current machine. The only thing I can think of is to buy a refurb model that still has SL installed (which would entitle you to a free upgrade to Lion).

Hmmm - interesting. Thanks for the reply. Am I right in thinking then that SNL won't work on a Quad-core i-7 MBP?

    There's always a catch!

Looks like I'll have to find a refurbished earlier MBP with SNL but I guess it'll still be pretty fast....

It depends on the build of the machine - I'm not sure what the cutoff was, but whenever a new OS is introduced, there are always machines either already for sale or going through production which still have the old firmware/build so they can handle the earlier OS (even if they come with the new one pre-installed). So, you'd have to check with Apple - they'd be the ones who would be able to tell you that. If you do check the refurb page, be careful and look at everything - somewhere further down the page, it will mention the OS - it'll either show the SL icon or simply say OS X which will be Lion.
