Apple should be more rigorous in line production. 6 out of 10 iPhones I have seen do not make strange noises and the buttons work perfectly. But it's odd that those who have noise is also common, especially since 2...3 months ago.
A friend of mine has the iPhone changed it three times this past month. For different faults. A software that turns off constantly, even with many factory restorations. He went to the store to get another, and on that night when he tried to make a call the microphone does not work (only with the headset or speakerphone) and now with the third one he has the same problem as mine, making some strange noises on the inside and when the iPhone vibrate we can even hear that something is loose inside.
Unfortunatly it was his "first" iPhone and having this 3 different problems make him asking for a refund instead of a new one. Apple(and his carrier) has always been very nice with him but he is tired of so many problems...and here we don't have any AppleStore, we have to wait in our carrier stores that they are not even close from were we live.
I understand that his case is maybe 1 in 10 but for a recent Apple costumer it's really bad, specially for Apple's reputation. (not in service because they are excellent, but in faulty products)

There has been a lot of cases with loose buttons and rattling sounds on the iPhone 4. I assure you that there are many others with this issue, and in all of these documented cases, there was no issue with any of these loose buttons failing in the future. If the rattling bothers you, then simply schedule an appointment with a Genius at your local Apple Store and they would be more than happy to replace it for you, but there are no guarantee that the replacement iPhone will not have this issue.

My IP4 rattles. Went to the Genius bar here in Sydney and they said, ahh, that's normal, they all rattle and then proceeded to assist some one else. I then called Apple Customer Server and requested an official response from Apple validating what the Genius bar person said. Still waiting for the email confirmation.
I still cant believe that a $1000 phone would have this kind of poor quality control.
Will update if/when I get Apple's confirmation

I have a iPhone 4s and mine has the annoying camera lens rattle
It is annoying tho I've paid £700 for a top of the range 64gb phone and it has annoying rattle. This is not good and I'm not impressed at all in have to say. This is shockingly poor from apples testing point of view.
This is something that apple should have resolved before releasing the new phone or now look at resolving. There must be something that they can do to make the auto focus lens rest in a certain spot so it doesn't rattle like it does
I love the iPhone to bits, but this is already getting on my nerves and swapping it at a shop for another one isn't going to resolve the issue.
Mine rattles when it vibrates so when I get a SMS or a call it rattles and its annoying.

I bought a new iPhone 4S for my son on Tuesday and, guess what, it rattles. Then I checked my older IPhone 4 and, though I'd never noticed it before, that rattles too. It doesn't seem to affect the utility of the phone but, like an inexplicable rattle in an expensive new car, it shouldn't be there at all. Not sure whether to take it back or not.

You're a lucky guy rmz83. I went with and met with a genius, and he just said that it's normal and wouldn't replace it. He said the iPhone 4 does it, and I said, my iPhone 4 does NOT do it. And he said he'll make a note and that was that. Very disappointed in the "outstanding" support that I hear about Apple providing.

I hope I get a positive outcome like some of you have and not the negative one others have gotten as I have to drive an hour to an Apple store for my genius appointment on Saturday! If I get "dismissed" like Ja5e, I will be ******!!
My 4 (now my wifes phone) doesn't rattle and its 8 months old but my 5 day old 4S rattles loudly when barely tapped near the apple logo or camera lense and even placing it down on the bed or couch cushion causes the noise!
I agree with those who say it does not affect function or performance, but I find it unacceptable that a phone that retails for more than $800 should rattle from placing it on a couch cushion or mattress!
Mine does not rattle on vibrate, to hear the camera rattle I have to really stick my ear close to it, as I dont live in a sound proof chamber.
So its an Apple product, that does not mean they were made by watchmakers to incredible tolerances, or that it's camera system was somehow built and measured by miniature pixies with magnifying glasses and micrometers...It came off a production line, in China where they make millions of them every week, therefore variations will occur now and then, and nothing is vere going to be perfect, even for the money we spend, and as long as millions are made each week nothing will ever change. To be honest, the phones are made very well compared with some other makes.
Now search 3GS camera rattle, search iPhone 4 camera rattle...are you seeing the pattern by any chance?

i just got my sprint iphone 4s yesterday and one of the first things i noticed was the" camera lens rattle" you can hear it when you sit it on the table or tap the back between the apple logo and the camera lens. so i took it back to best buy today. when i showed them the problem he pulled out his new 4s and it had the same rattle. i asked if i could replace it but they did not have anymore. so i told him i wanted to return it for a refund, he looked at me like i was crazy. but i got my money back with no problems. i dont know if it's a real problem, but i cant stand that sound, it makes my nice top of the line phone feel cheap to me. i never had a phone rattle like that. as much as i really wanted that phone i'll have to find something else.

Yes. I have an iPhone 4s (white) and their is a slight rattle when I tap the back of the phone near the camera. From what I have seen around, it happens on every iPhone and it is perfectly normal. According to Apple, it had to do with the hardware that makes the iPhone vibrate, since the piece of hardware is placed close to the camera area. However, if you attempt to shake the iPhone, it wil not rattle. Therefore be assured, this is perfectly normal, don't worry about it.

My IPhone 4S is about 2 weeks old and has had the slight rattle since new. Every time I set it down, I hear it. I took to the Apple store, they said it was normal. I was in a bit of a rush. I guess I should have checked his phone.
