    I have the same problem! Did the new software upgrade hoping it would help the crap battery life and now in one hour ive lost 10% with no usage! I've just been playing around with my settings thats it! it just lost 1% in the last 2 minutes, just sitting there!!!....WHAT IS APPLE GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS? IN MY OPINION THIS IS A RIP OFF!....I'm locked into a contract of 12 months! cant return the phone as the initial 14 day return period is passed (i kept the phone thinking the software upgrade would fix it) Apple genius team refused to replace my phone with a new one saying they are not allowed to replace phones if the reason is the batter issue (as there will be an upgrade!) and now the upgrade just screwed up my battery more!!! WHAT HAS APPLE GOTTA SAY FOR THEMSELVES???

    Here's an update for everyone.

    After following some of the advice from people on here I have another pic to show.

    I did a Full power cycle dropping the battery to as low as 5% then charging back up to 100%.  I also disabled Locations Services for Diagnostics & usage, Location-Based iAds, Setting Time Zone under System Services.  I also disabled everything else in Locations Services except Compass and Find My iPhone.

    Now it's a lot better than it was but still not perfect.

    Have you got an active exchange email account with calendar enabled as well? For me the culprit is the calendar when enabled on one of my activesync accounts! Once I turn that off, battery stabilizes!

    WELL - I was one of the first few to post on this discussion thread, and I've been watching all the responses with great interest. I've tried a few proposed solutions, and I think the following seemed to improve battery life:

    * let the battery drain to iPhone power down, then recharge to 100%

    * hard reset (so, holding home and power buttons until the Apple logo appears)

    * switch off location services

    * switch off email push

    * auto lock at 1min, and turning down screen brightness a little

    ...everything else (iCloud sync, screen notifications, etc.) is still turned on. I didn't do the restore malarky - too much hassle.

    Result has been significant improvement in standby time (so, between charges) to around 30 hours - I still DO notice a battery drain of 1% each 7-8 mins or so during use, so this is STILL HIGH in my opinion, but what I have now is OK until 5.0.2 is released

    I was losing 0.5% per hour on iPhone 4S in standby with 5.0. This new patch drains 2-3% an hour. Not very happy

    OMG!!! I can't believe I've been such a fool and updated my software to 5.0.1!!! I've never had any batery issues with my iphone 4s when it's been running on 5.0, but not knowing much about things I've decided to go for that update and I'm so regreting it now!!! Before my phone with average usage could go about 2 days and three nights without charge, and now it's down to just one day... DISSAPOINTED APPLE, shame on YOU...

    22% BATTERY LOST IN A NIGHT, I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT !! Yesterday, I upgraded to 5.0.1, charged my iPhone 3GS (100%). Then I engaged the airplane mode. This morning, I wake up and the battery was 78% !!! No mail consulting, no phoning or SMS... What's the solution ?

    My new iphone 4s had a bad batterylife from the start with ios5, so I was happy that apple made an opdate to ios5.01..... Until after updating.... now it it's soooooo baaaad. In 24 hours of stand-by-time it went from 100% til 56%. Everything that I thougt could be able to use power, was turned off.

    Sending an sms sometimes seems to take 1-2% batterylife. this is fustrating. SO DEAR APPLE... Turn my iphone into a serious phone please!

    I am also a victim to the battery drain issue with the update. My battery was never good with the 4S running 5.0, but it was never this bad. I went to bed around midnight with my battery at 50%, woke up at 7AM, and my phone was DEAD. That is just inexcusable.

    What worries me is that I was on iOS 5 since beta 1 on my iPhone 4, and never experienced any battery issues. This all occurred with the 4S. I'm really starting to think this is more of a hardware issue than originally thought.

    Same here as everyone else. Just adding my 2 cents. iPhone 4S 64gb battery goes from 100% to 80% overnight when the phone is on standby (5.0.1). Reset the settings, drained the battery and charged to 100%, no help whatsoever. So the 5.0.1 is complete disaster...waiting for 5.0.2. Things are not looking good for Apple, first the 5.0 update nightmare and now this....

    This user has had horrendous battery drain since day one.  Did the update, full restore (as new device), followed all the 'home remedies' - still horrendous.  I'm not upset or threatening to return my phone, but I fully expect some answers and resolution to the issues. To be required to re-charge twice daily is impractical at best.

    I agree with you ! but i don't get why my baterry is worst when it was fine before the upddate !

    corrupt system level settings created by an iOS 5 bug in the original release that caused battery recalibration issues, etc.  just installing the update does not fix the issue in most cases.  you need to clear out those settings and recalibate the battery.  follow the procedure below in order.  it does fix the problem in most cases.

    Go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery  (tilll it shuts off with the spinning wheel)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

    In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

    Again nothing new to add. Same poor battery life, drains very quickly from 100% to 70% in about 2-3hours. Have tried various things but no real change.

    Hoping this post (plus the 1000s of others) will prompt a more rapid response from the powers that be (.....Apple). This is my first iphone (4s), I moved from Blackberry just last week, so not very impressed so far. My old BB Bold is waiting on the sidelines to take over like a knight in shining armour if things don't get better.

    Come on Apple, sort out this glitch on your flagship device!!!!!

    As I notice under usage section, I let the iPhone 4 standby for 2 hr without using anything the usage say I use 20 mins and battery drain 2 percent. I try turn off all notification, delete all game center related games. It still says I  use 15 min in every hour , even I am not using it and let it standby.

    Something is going on in the background, I would say it connect to something that we don't know. If I continuous use it, it will last 4 to 5 hrs like normal. However the standby is killing the battery life.
