Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

When there was a 5.0.1 update, I updated it using my phone instead of iTune.  Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Add me to the list.  I have an iPhone 4S 32gb with Sprint.  It drops 1% every 1 to 2 mins when using the phone, before and after IOS 5.0.1.  Using the phone meaning texting, checking email and surfing Facebook.  Never really make any calls.  On average my phone lasts about a day to a day and a half.  I admit isn't not that bad but I don't use my phone all that much.  If I start making calls and surf the net I'm sure it won't last the day.  I have push "on" Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail and Facebook. Setting Time Zone, Location-Based iAds and Bluetooth are turned off.  Last night before going to bed, midnight, my phone was at 96% with just 7 mins of use since last full charge which was around 8 something pm.  I put the phone in sleep mode, not turning it off.  This morning my phone  was at 85% with 1 hr and 6 mins of usage and 11 hrs 51 mins in standby.  I did get 8 alerts, 7 email and 1 Facebook, but I can't believe this had caused my phone to be in use for an hour.  After checking my alerts, just checking no replying, my phone dropped to 83%.  It dropped 2% in the minute or so it took me to check the alerts.

I still like my iPhone a LOT!  I'll LOVE it when Apple fixes this battery issue.

Possibly for those 4S users, including me, the dual antennas are at fault? I've heard that when in standby mode they are constantly looking for signal, when there not supposed to, causing lots of drainage. Something for apple to think about..

Update to my Verizon 4s issues I just got my 3rd phone yesterday. They just replaced my 2nd on the day before. The 2nd phone had connection issues and could not activate the Sim card.  After 3 hours Verizon had me remove the sim and activate it without it.  Several hours went buy and I started having connection issues even with full bars. Verizon told me that I am only a mile and a half from the tower (never had issues with my old 4 or my wife’s 4) Verizon set an appointment up with the Genius bar the next morning to replace it. Talked to a senior level tech support because I was a little ****** that I had to get another phone in less the 24 hours. The senior tech was very helpful but said she thinks it’s a software problem.. (read into that as you will) Regardless the phone had to be replaced and it was.  The new one turned its self off last night and put a few files in the Diag.. Talk to apple this morning and did a complete restore.  SO far I am very surprised to say that it seems to be working like I originally expected it to. Usage is 26 minutes      Standby 2 hours 16 minutes. It just now is at 98% 1 phone call 10 or so texts Exchange set to push and received a few e-mails All the location services on, including time zone WIFI  has been running the whole time. Left the signal area twice and it reconnected just fine I just got the new sim from Verizon but have yet to put it in. been running sim free To me that is more like it but we shall see how the day goes. but this is defiantly an improvement over the other 2

I'm selling the 4s and getting the 4 running on iOS 4.3.5. People may think I'm crazy for downgrading my phone and operating system, but whatever. At least I won't have to deal with this.

Many folks resolved their iOS 5.0.1. issues by resetting all settings. For those who have not picked up on this other thread:

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3484755?start=0&tstart=0

    Copy/pasted from that thread:

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

One other note. After the phone reboot just go through the default setup ( i.e lang, wifi, Siri, etc) and choose "setting up new phone". Don't restore. That will just reinstall potential corrupt settings. Your apps and data will still be there as before.  Really hope this helps some folks. My personal 4S is sitting @58% after 14hrs and moderate use.

I have posted this as a separate thread and I'm not trying to be a spammer I just want to see what other people may think about my idea regarding the ability to turn 3G on and off on our phones and why it was taken away.  I also posted this at the Apple feedback page (www.apple.com/feedback)

I have done everything I can think of and that has been suggested in the poor battery life threads and at this point I think the biggest problem I may be having with my white 32 GB iPhone 4S is that my phone spends all day trying to find a better 3G connection.  Ironicaly I work in the AT&T Center in downtown Los Angeles (I don't happen to work for AT&T that would be even worse )  and the 3G signal at my desk is terrible.  1 to 2 bars most of the time and it is always jumping up and down. Yesterday I don't know what happened but I couldn't even get a decent internet connection.  I was trying to look something up on google and couldn't connect.  I then tried all the apps that rely on the net; Maps, Facebook, Twitter, Atomic Web Browser, Opera Web Browser, iTunes, App Store, DropBox, Find my iPhone, etc. and couldn't connect on any of them.  And while I was doing this I could watch my battery drop and feel my phone heat up.  Not a problem I 've had so far.  I think the battery is dropping off too fast but this was the worst I've seen.

Once I got out of the building and into a different area of town, I had plenty of signal and all my apps began working again.  The phone cooled off and the battery drain slowed way down.

The one or two times at work when 3G actually dropped off and I was on EDGE I was able to connect to the net and my apps worked just fine.

I am not sure why Apple took the option to turn 3G on and off away but I wish they would give it back in the next update.

Close your applications, espically games, music, and news apps that drain the battery. If you don't know how: tap the home button twice, hold down on the app you want to close, a minue sign will appear and close anything you want. This helped me a lot (a long with all the other things that were said like turning off location services and wifi and bluetooth and notifications etc.)

    Hope this works for you!

I was outside before on 3G after posting my comment and kept receiving email notifications from this post and newstand.  I was also chatting on AIM, picked up a call for 2 mins and did some light browsing/sending email.  So from my time of usage at the previous post 1 hour 25 mins, my current usage is 2 hours, 43 mins total.  And from 21 hours 22 mins standby to 1 day 0 hours standby.  71% battery to now 44%.  Previous post created at 9:38.  It is now 12:19pm.  I'm not sure if the 20%+ drop is a good average when the phone is in use?

Edit: Sound and vibrate are on for notifications.

To me, the issue started the moment I updated to 5.0.1 from the iPhone 4S itself.

I do not have standby drain, but 3G internet eats battery at 1% every 1m30secs which is twice as fast as it should be.

General use of the phone will deplete battery very fast as well, but standby mode is OK, it drains around 0,5% per hour.

I have tried to reset all settings and this night I am going to try to update from iTunes itself and, despite I do not want to lose my sms, restore as new.

Another issue I have is that phone will drop 3G network at random, even when having 3-5 bars to GPRS and it takes a long time to connect back to 3G.

    Apple MUST fix this

Yes, I also notice quite a quick drain when under use. Standby seems fine.

A quick update on the not-fully-charging/discharging problem:

Today when I saw my iPhone 4S discharge while plugged I tried a few things, none of which halted the delince in battery life from 100% to 92%. I tried:

    * Closing the most recently opened apps

    * Powering off and then powering back on my phone

    * A hard reset

I tried these three steps while my iPhone 4S was still plugged in. Evern after hard reset, the battery percentage continued to drop. Only after unplugging and replugging my iPhone 4S did the battery level start going back up.
