Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

    Hey,

    I followed your steps a few days ago and now I think the battery is working better. At 22% I have 5hour 30mins of usage and 20hour22mins of standby.

    I know it still requires a daily charge, but living in fear of losing battery is not the way to enjoy your new phone. Keep that in mind guys

    BTW, anyone who can help me... I have set my Push notifications under Mail, Contacts, Calendars to off and have also set individual mail accounts to fetch hourly. However, I am still receiving e-mails constanting through my g-mail and exchange. Do you know why this is?

    your battery looks relativey normal for that amount of usage and standby.  push notifications  is constant and will "override" the fetch setting if the email server supports push.  since exchange and gmail both support push your fetch setting will be ignored.  if you want it to only use your fetch time, you will need to turn push off.

    I just stumbled upon this thread and comtemplating whether or not I should do this reset now, or wait until Apple issues a new update, or a set of instructions like the ones davidch outlined (well done davidch by the way for discovering this fix).  If I do the reset, does it matter what settings are on the phone when I do the 5.0.1 update and then subsequent reset (ie time settings on/off, notifications on/off etc)?  I assume not since they'll all get reset anyway.  Also, does it matter what the battery life is at when I do the reset?  Should I aim to have it closer to 100% or closer to like 20% when I start?

    it does not matter...  location services will get reset back to default.  apps will have to be opened once to turn back on (i.e. they will ask you if the can use it).  it really shouldn't matter when you do the reset but it will probably be best to do it towards the end of the charge cycle... just so you don't have to wait to long to get the discharge complete and fully recharge again.

    My 4S battery seems to have fixed as well but i think it may be because the other phone i had was defective. it would get warm abd cause the battery to drain. BUT my replacement 4S seems to be holding up well. right now i have 15 hrs standby and 1 hr 30 mins of usage and 71% battery.. dk if thats good or not.. i dont really get tons of calls or really use it tons. Is that good or bad?

    After starting my phone as a new device and syncing from the cloud All I lost was my notebook (I don't know if it's just because I didn't have it turned on to sync) it took me about 5 minutes to retype my old notes back in.  And my personalized ringtones per person, and some sound and screen settings. Calendar, contacts, texts, emails, pictures, and vms were all there after I went into each app. It took a few minutes for the text numbers to associate with name contacts. It was not a biggie and took a short time.

    from my experience i think its the 3g, because when im at home where there always a full bar in my signal, i'm loosing a 1% percent every 3 hrs on a standby mode, all notification are off, wifi=off, siri=on, location=off, but when im at the office where my signal tend to fluctuate every so often im loosing about 4% percent every hour with the same status on standby mode, why did they disable the button for 3g on and off unlike iphone 4 it has an option if you want to use 3g or not, hoping they will bring back the option for 3g usage

    Same problem here!

    Turn off cellular data then.  Turning this off shuts down the data (radio).  It does not effect cell reception. You wont be able to access data for any function or app that requires it, but you can still use the phone.  If you have visual voicemail it will be deactivated though, but you can still dial into your voicemail using the phone keypad.

    Turning off cellular data on the 4s will turn off ALL forms of data communication (3G, 2G-Edge, GPS, etc).  The only difference between the iPhone 4 and 4s is that the 4 had separate controls for cellular data and 3G.  If you wanted to have data but did not want to use 3G because your battery life blows, you turn "off" the 3G toggle and leave the cellular data toggle "on" (so you end up using Edge or 2G, GPS, etc).

    I would say that something is definitely causing sflomenb to drain faster than normal.  My stats right now are:

    Battery = 96%

    Standby = 7 hrs 18 mins

    Usage = 19 mins

    So about 0.54% per hour of battery drain.

    Hi there,

    Im having problems with my iphone 4s battery, just done get it at all!

    At 12.43pm today i checked my usage etc and it was the below -

    Usage - 2hrs and 4mins

    Standby - 3hrs and 57 mins

    Battery - 69%

    If you had those times together, it adds up to 6hrs and 1min.

    I only took my phone off charge this morning at 8.43am so it was 100% then! That is only 4 hours between 8.43am and 12.43pm! know i most definitely have not used 2hrs and 4mins of usage, im at work!

    Help!

    Your standby time (total time the phone has been on) includes the usage time (2hrs 41mins).  You don't have a problem.  Your phone is draining at a rate of 7.8% per hour, which is within specs for the iPhone 4s.

    I broke down. I'm at 33% with 3 hrs usage and 8 standby. That's my average with my last iPhone 4.  My phone gets really warm with under a minute of use. Called Apple. I get a "remade" one tomorrow. I kind of don't like that because my phone is new. They said that the remade (not refurbished) ones are actually tested so they all work. Ok I guess...maybe I should've waited for 5.0.2? The girl at Apple said she has seen problems with both software and hardware on the new 4s which is causing battery drain. This is when she is notified on her follow ups. My point is, they are seeing problems with both issues, not just a battery recall or software solution. Good luck.
