Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

It's pretty clear problem is a bug in original iOS 5 software. Definitely not a hardware problem. Returning your phone for exchange probably won't do much good. Let's look at what's going on here....Some people had upgraded their 3gs/4g to 5.0 with no problems. Then bought new 4s with no issues. Then downloaded upgrade 5.0.1 'fix' to new phone, again with no issues (this is my case). As you can see below, my 4s w/5.0.1 works great. I've never had any issues.

Some people upgraded to IOS 5.0 to their 3gs and/or 4g phones, and inherited an immediate mess concerning several issues, battery drain being the most prevalent. Some didn't.

Then new 4s is released, and resident 5.0 worked great out of the box, for most, but not for all. Then 5.0.1 'fix' is released, and cleaned up issues for some, but not others......and for some, made matters even worse, for both 3gs/4g users and new 4s users alike.

This tells us, without any doubt, that problem lays within original 5.0 release....and Apple has already said as much. There is a bug in there that many have found work-arounds for, to fix their issues, but yet same work-arounds (reload, etc.) only exasperated the problem for others, and can even trigger new ones. And yet for others, 'fix' update had no effect what-so-ever (like me).

    My humble suggestions are:

    - If you are on 5.0, do not upgrade to 5.0.1 'fix'. If it doesn't work, it can seriously trigger a worse condition.

    - Drain battery to a condition that phone will not turn on any longer, then do a full charge with wall charger. This means after phone shows 100%, keep on charger for additional 3-4 hours. Your phone will charge at normal rate until it hits 80% (but will show 100%), then a slower 'trickle' charge is enabled which truly tops off charge to a maximum value. Do this several times allowing phone to drain completely every time. This is necessary for every new battery, no matter what the brand of phone, to maximize it's potential. Also, take phone out of any case you may have on phone, to reduce heat buildup during charging. Batteries can be permanently damaged if allowed to get 'hot' often.

    - Do a hard reset...hold home page button on bottom front of phone, the same time as holding on/off/sleep button down on top right of phone  Let the swip bar come up and ignore. Release only after Apple logo shows, then release immediately. Phone will go blank for a short time, then you'll see a 'small gear' turning, then you will be brought to normal home screen. This may, or may not, solve some problems for you, but cannot make anything worse.

Because so many people are having success with so many different 'fixes', and others are not, shows that bug is multi-layered. Some have telecom 3g problems, some email problems, some wifi problems, etc. So unless you really know what you are doing, I would suggest do nothing other than above steps, along with disabling everything you don't need. Note that you can turn phone completely off by enacting the sleep/off button and home button at the same time, and then using the swipe to shut it down. If you charge before going to sleep, at least you will wake to a fully charged phone

Problem phones are running functions that should be off, unless called up by an action on your part. It's a bug that Apple will fix soon. And because is a multi-faceted problem, it's not an easy fix for them, obviously. You can bet they are in Crisis Mode right now.

I know this is a pain in the *** for many, but just hang in there. A fix will be found. I would resist the temptation to believe the 4s is just not a good phone, and go get another brand because of a new software glitch. Happens every time, although often not this bad. I would hope Apple will relax the window for returns, as this is clearly a situation that they created. And forget getting relief from Apple store geniuses'. Corporate is not going to tell them a thing unless they know what 'exactly' what is going on, and have a definitive 'fix.

Also remember that 17% loss per hour with 3g connection = their 6 hour stat. - Standby 200 hr. = .5 per hour loss to be expected. So if you have rapid loss, try playing with 3g settings. Probably means 3g is trying to connect when it shouldn't, be it from maps, itunes sync, siri, whatever. Also, phone should NEVER get 'hot'. Means it's operating overtime, and you should at least turn completely off until cools down.

New UPDATE: The drai n is back!

So, after almost a week of being free from drain, it has come back. Only a day ago there was NO loss of battery life on idle.

Today, suddenly I'm losing 3-4% per hour.

At 3am I uplugged my now 100% charged phone. By 8am it was down to 83%, sitting on the night table. It's gotten worse from then.

There were NO changes to my set up. Notifications are off.

HOW FREAKIN' ANNOYING IS THAT??? IT WAS FINE BUT REVERTED BACK!

    HELLO? CALLING APPLE?

You worry me. I also had the battery drain problem 3 to 4 % per hour

of unused . This lasted for a full week while i did

many settings and IOS5 reinstalls with no good results.

As i already mentioned , suddenly from yesterday morning

when i decided to activate and use the new sim card went

whith the IP4S instead of my usual one activated one year ago

on my IP4, battery drain has disapeared.

I dare not touch anything now for fear the problem come back

    again..

    Sorry....forgot one other thing.

Usage is the total time you have been using your phone for anything, being 3g usage, wifi connection, playing music, or just checking settings. I have an app that is a 'Thai language translator'. It's a resident app that has all data needed to run, on my phone alone....no wireless connection needed. I can use this all day long, and will eat very little power, compared to being connected to 3g for just a half hour. So when you see 'usage' stats here, it really doesn't mean much unless you explain what exactly that usage was. I can be very misleading otherwise.

Rumours says that 5.0.2 is released within a week.

The rumours claims that Apple's internal goal is for iOS 5.0.2 to provide iPhone 4S users 40 hours of standby with 10 hours of active use.

10 hours of use lolll. Ah, those mac magazines. I mean, the 3GS was a 5hrs 3G internet device, the IP4 is rated for 6, just as the 4S. If it's on spec for every user, it'll be a great achievement for Apple.

You reported that your replaced your phone five days ago at an apple store, returning your phone 4 times. Some of your postings seem inconsistent with previous postings, including meta data and screen shots.

You have tried a total of 5 phones based on your post. CAN YOU CONFIRM THE APPLE STORE BASED ON YOUR LOCATION DATA.

As of this time, APPLE HAS NOT RELEASED ANY PREVIEW TO DEVELOPERS for an iOS update.

At this time, we conclude the the fix within the thread continues to work for users with issues.

    Thanks

    Best of Luck.

You joined the thread only today, sorry that you have no interest in APPLE products but you can continue to use the mobile device registered if that satisfies your need.

    Best of luck,

    Thanks

I just got my new phone on Saturday and today at work, by noon it was almost dead.   I don't use my phone during the dayk, so it sits there mostly, how the heck can the battery be almost dead?   By 2 it was down to 10%, so I turned it off.   My 3gs didn't have that problem & I used it more than this one so far.   I'm half tempted to take it back.   I've change many of my settings but really, I like those feature, that's why I bought the phone.   Apple, you MUST fix this.

I've had the iPhone 3, 3GS, 4 and now the 4S and the battery life on the 4S is just horrible.  I think it has become much worse since I upgrade to 5.0.1.  At this point, I drain about 10% per hour in essentially standby mode.  I'm not sure what to do ant this point.

Your "gestapo bot" is a sad joke. Yesterday it advised a user who mistyped "frustrated" to "fristrates" to find a properly suited language forum. That was so ridiculous. Right out of a comic book.

    Hi James Cohen,

As I explained 3 days ago our devices, which are all 4s are performing fine. We have not had any battery issues with the new devices. The fixes reported here have worked for some uses and have continued to work.

It is strange that you are reporting a return of poor performance by your device. Have you loaded any new apps, including free purchases from the APP store?

Have you loaded any new APP's to android devices including free downloads over the last couple of days (3)? Do these devices operate on the same wifi network or public wifi hot spots as your other devices?

Read all your post, they are interesting.

Try doing a hard reset of the device alone but I suspect you may have other issues that you should consider exploring.

    Thanks

    Best of Luck.

I've noticed another bug. it is that when your phone is asleep it disconnects from wifi. I got a replacement phone from apple and its still doing it. Also i talked to all the apple store employees who had an iphone 4 or 4S

and they have the same issue. i found that by turning of cell data when I'm home or at work and my battery will last 2 days with heavy use.

they all already reported it to apple.

I gotta say something here....you do seem really intent on highjacking this threat at any given opportunity. You seem to post on every single page, much of your content having nothing to do with subject at hand, and what is, is just a constant rehash of old content.

Knock it off!  Go to a social network site if you are in need of friendship so bad. Please.... go get a life.....and chill on posting incessantly here. You are wasting everyone's time, the rest of whom are trying to figure their problems out.
