Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Hello,

I would like to share my experience, hoping that will help to find what is the problem related to the battery abnormal consuption.

    actually I'm still using Iphone4, before I had Iphone3 and Iphone 3gs.

Its more than 3 years tha tI'm using every day that IOS, and for what I udnerstood the problem of the battery it should be related to a software problem.

    let me explain:

I'm from Italy, and inside my own country I nnever had problem with battery.

but when I travel outside Italy (for my job) I experienced several time a battery issue.

Someone can think that this should be related to the roaming network, but its not true.

The issue has happen for the iphone 3, 3gs, and Iphone 4, using all the IOS version from 2.7 upto the 5.0.1.

When I'm outside Italy, my company don't pay for the data roaming, so I must disable disable that features, and normally I use the Wifi when is available in the hotel or in the public area.

I discoverd that if when i'm connecting to the hotel trought the wifi for downloading the mail (exchange integration) or check the newspaper, even if I press normally the home button and then lock the phone (and moved to a place where there is no connection), sometime (not always) it seems that something remain hanging up, a drain down the battery, the phone become hot even if I'm not using it. I also isntalled an APP that show and monitor the CPU and the application and it shows that the cpu are constantly running between 50 and 70% even if:

    • I close all the opened APPs from the tast manager
    • I try to change into another operator thats seems to have better signal
    • disable the 3g connection and using only the GSM
    • disable the localization service
    • disable to get the time from the network
    • power off and on the device
    • put down all the notification

so normally even in roaming the battery life is around 1 day, in that condition it cannot last than 4 hours, and apperently for me there no way to solve the problem.

but if I back in the hotel or in another place where I have possibility to connect to the wifi, and after you just hear the sound for the new mail, the problem is magically solved.

so for my point of view there is something in the procedure of downloading mail (I also point out that I don't use the push notification but just the fetching hourly) that is hanging and bring the CPU very high causing the draining of the battery.

I travel a lot (there is no distintion between the country, I travel in US, Brazil, Argentina, europe), and every time I got a software update from IOS I always hope that this problem is solved but till now NO way.

I'm also sure about the software issue because after changing several hardware device, is not possible that I can able to experience the same issue.

I'm capable to replicate the problem, even if right now I'm also able to cohabit with beacuse now if I feel that the phone became hot even it is in standby I just need to find a connection or just activate the 3g data for a while.

I hope this can be usefull to address the solution.

    ciao

I gotta say something here....you do seem really intent on highjacking this threat at any given opportunity. You seem to post on every single page, much of your content having nothing to do with subject at hand, and what is, is just a constant rehash of old content.

Knock it off!  Go to a social network site if you are in need of friendship so bad. Please.... go get a life.....and chill on posting incessantly here. You are wasting everyone's time, the rest of whom are trying to figure their problems out.

Well you say that after having posted a long and boring post advising to do a reset of the device, a full drain of it, and not installing 5.0.1, all rehash of prior posts. You're not much in a position to talk. Further, I don't post on every page, it just so happens that when I come back to the thread, I reply to some of the stuff that has been said and that concerns me in some respect, plus I quoted Miless procedure from page 369 because it seems valuable to me. I don't see you telling a bot like DrPork to take a chill pill yet there's much more cause to do so than with me. This is called double standard. Most likely I'm simply just not enough pro-Apple to your liking and that annoys you - if you read anything I write it's quite obvious I'm not here to make friends. Or is it just I offended you through another handle. In any case you go take a hike.

    I ran a test today.

I charged up my iPhone 4s with iOS 5.0.1 to 100% -using the wall charger that came with the phone- then unplugged it.

I then immediately called a friend and we were determined to talk until my battery ran out completely. We talked, we watched a tv show together over the phone (but NOT ON the phone) thinking we were MST3K, did household stuff, made lunch and generally acted rather domestic.

Apple claims "8 hours of talk time on 3G" but I ended up getting just over 168 mins or 2.8 hours until the battery went completely dead which is insanely not great. It did not get as crazy hot as it does using Safari over 3G for 20mins but did get what I'd describe as a little warm.

Something is definitnely, seriously wrong with the software or the hardware or some combination thereof.

Brand new White iPhone 4s (not a restore from previous iPhone) which the yellow tint screen problem.

Brand new SIM card (my old one from a Motorola Razr model 1.0 was so old it didn't fit, hah!)

    No other apps running.

No other phone calls during that time.

No GPS/Location indicator (it is set on to display when in use) in the menubar.

Approximately 4 bars in signal strength indicator consistantly.

    Bluetooth is off.

Diagnostic send to Apple is on.

    Location based iAds are off.

    Calender Notifications are off.

I did a "hard reset" after the 5.0.1 update.

Email is set to all manual.

    No exchange account.

iTunes was on and my phone was listed in the sidebar on my Mac.

My iPhone was connected to my WiFi network.

Siri "raise to speak" is off.

    Ping is off.

My iPhone will loose about 4-5% battery per 8 hours overnight while not plugged in.

    Everything else is on.

After installing the new update I fully charged my iphone 4s and let it standby when I went to sleep at 100%. When I woke it was at 77%. I want to go back to os 5.0 because I didn't have this problem before the update. I rather revert back to os 5.0 I hope apple techs fixs this soon cause I love my iphone and I know its the best phone out there.

My battery life was horrible when I first got the iPhone 4s.  Then I was hopeful that the update would help.  NEGATIVE!!!  Battery life is still bad.  Apple needs to do something quick!

Sorry if you think that my responses are comic book like. Just trying to help, Apple, similar to most companies have forums and support sites that can cater to customers all around the world. I find that it can be easier to explain an issue in your native tongue. Friends in Various Eastern European countries, Germany, Russia Proper and France may better explain their issues. I simply did not understand what was the meaning of the word and translations services miss important details.

Apple has released no preview of IOS to developers as of this post. Many users report success in improving their battery performance but it may not help in your case. I suspect that developers will confirm that they received an update to collaborate the story that Eric Mack has written about on CNET CRAVE picked up from www.macerkopf.de.

    Best of luck.

    Doughawaii,

I agree with Darobman, just ignore him.... There is no need to get into unnecessary arguments that were not anywhere helpful for whole group of frustrated people.

    DrStrangepOrk,

Please ignore him. I enjoyed the discussion in this forum and told my friends about the helpful tips that everybody tried to share, but not something was arguing back and forth for personal issue.

I posted something out of topic on page 372. I am not a tech savvy so I don't know how to insert  link

Hello. Is the Iphone 4S my first Iphone. My old phone is a Blackberry Torch 2.

I updated my iPhone to 5.0.1 IOS, but my battery is charged at 07:00 am in 100%, and at noon and is 52%. Now, 08:37 pm and is off the phone. A curiosity is that off with 10 to 12% load automatically.
I have a also a iPAD 2, and when I had the IOS 4.3, I loaded my iPhone every 2 or 3 days on standby.
Now with the update 5 and later with the 5.0.1, I have to load your battery every night. Today at 07:00 am was 100%. Now with the 3G turned off and only with WIFI on, I have 68% battery.
A hug and I hope the Apple contact me before I end my term technical support. The preferred language is Spanish or Portuguese contact.

I just got the new iphone 4s and first thing I looked up how to save battery life and read all the suggestions that Apple gave. One big thing is I keep the wi-fi turned off and I even keep the data turned off. And when I need the service I use wi-fi, turn only it on, and if I need the data service I keep the wi fi turned off and turn on the data service. There are other suggestions as well.... take a look at it. I have very good battery life.

    Hey folks.

Already made a post in a similar thread, but I figured I'd just copy and paste that one in here, as well, as most of the people on that thread, and a whole lot more, are probably more active here.

Hope all of your phones are making some progress at the very least, as we await some remedy to all of this down the line, in hopes of it getting resolved. I hadn't turned to any discussion boards, seeking things out as this is my very first iPhone, so I don't have a great sense of understanding about the operability of iphones, much less the functional aspects of its battery life.

I figured I'd throw my two cents in to the ever-expanding sea of the comparing of notes. All I've done, ever since I got my 4S is a complete battery recalibration (starting from a 100% charge only to run it all the way down to a brick and then recharging it up to 100%) as well as a resetting of settings because there was a glitch in iOS 5 with push notifications not working with iCloud, which didin't make thinks any better until the update rolled around. Other than that, I've got all kinds of stuff turned on on my phone, and looking at my stats ever since my last charge this is was it has logged down as of now, at 72%:

    Usage: 2h 10 min

    Standby: 18h 40 min

Now, should it stand at way more than 72%? As noted earlier, I have no experience of owning a portable iDevice, so I wouldn't know as to whther or not this performance seems ideal or not. For the sake of validation, I'd appreciate it if anyone, who thinks they have a healthy device, would give their input toward these stats.

    Appreciate your comments

Edit: As it has been a few hours since that post (14:39 according to the post), I've had it locked in the hours leading up to now, and it now stands at the following at a percentage of 69%.

    Usage: 2h, 22 min

    Standby: 21h, 50 min

BIG IMPROVEMENT WITH RESTORE through iTunes. I had tried just about every recommended solution on this thread without success. 2 nights ago after a full recharge I woke up with 18% battery drain with the phone simply on standby. After 14 hrs of standby and 2 hours of usage I was down to 38% battery power remaining yesterday. Not good.

Then last night I saw a couple of recent posts recommending restore through iTunes in which the 5.0.1 update is reinstalled to the 4S.  So I gave it a shot, and after the download I chose: reset to new phone. I then gave the phone a full recharge before going to bed. This morning I was happy to see 97% remaining. From an 18 percent drain the night before to only a 3 percent drain on standby (after several hours) is obviously a big improvement.

After about 20 hours of standby and 2 hours of usage today the phone was down to 60 percent battery power remaining. Although I'm not thrilled about the battery drain during usage it's about the same as my old iPhone 3. I figure with all the functions the 4S offers as well as the dual processor you have to be realistic that the device is power hungry. But stemming the battery drain on standby is a huge improvement for me. At the current rate I can get through a normal day or more. It's certainly no big deal to reach over and plug the 4S in to a wall socket, computer, or car cig. lighter on days when I'm using it more than usual. Good luck.
