Q: iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

After installing the update make sure you reset all setttings. I have done a few updates now  and  have had much better  sucess after settings reset all. Standby drain has been virtually eliminated from 2-4% hr before update. It is located in settings/reset//reset all settings. You loose some wifi and desktop settings, but data, apps, etc remain intact.

I'd wait for davidch to fill you in on this, but, since at some point we all have to update our phones, I would go ahead and update my phone to the latest version and thereby proceed from there.

In regards to the pictures, it seems as if there is no loss of data except for the initial settings you choose upon boot up such as Wifi, language and so forth.

Hopefully someone can further clarify the outcome of this process.

EDIT:  Nevermind. He was on the ball way earlier than me, there.

Will do, and then if for some reason when I do the reset and my pics and stuff aren't there, I just have to sync with itunes, and my stuff will be back, correct?  Thanks so much davidch for all your answers to everybody's questions, as well as this fix that seems to be helping cure most of these battery issues.

Also, if I choose to wait to upgrade from 5.0, will I just be able to download 5.0.2, or will I have to download 5.0.1 first, and then 5.0.2?

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

    2. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

if 5.0.2 becomes available, you will likely be able to updrade directly to from 5.0.0 (i.e. not requiring 5.0.1)

I tried the steps and my battery still does not hold a charge. I did notice however that my Wi-Fi will sit there and disconnect then connect about every 5 seconds. I turned off my wifi and it has helped.

Tried again my 4s with a different approach. Everything is on. I mean everything. Only there is no simcard in the phone. Guess what? Usage time reported in 5 hours is 5 minutes. And the battery went down only 3%. Logic tells me that whatever is wrong with the 4s it has do with the radio chip. And the weird decision from Apple to take control of whether i want use 3G or not. Software or hardware i dont know but it definately has to do with the signal and the constant effort of the phone to  get better reception.

I mentioned above about battery calibration.  I think the problems with settings have led to batteries being grossly miscalibrated.

I am sure you have already calibrated but the specifics of how I have done it have really helped in relation to this fix.  I specifically closed out all my apps and put my phone in airplane mode while charging from 0% (shutdown).  On top of that, I let the phone charge for about 4.5 hours to make sure the battery got a full charge with it topping off.

If there is nothing else you can think to do, try this out and you might be surprised.  Just let us know how it turns out because several of us are probably interested to know.

any device that runs iOS 5.  i have seen very good results with iPhones 3GS, 4, 4S and iPad 2.  i have not personally tested on iPad 1 or any iPod touch, but would expect similar results

I reset all the setting and fully charged the phone. But still the batter is losing power quickly. Do I need to wait until this drains out then again fully recharge it?

You need to do every step in order to get it to work including fully drain battery and the fully charge battery

This can be done wirelessly right?  I saw another poster on another forum mention this having to be done over itunes (ie being plugged in) and just want to make sure.  Also, does doing a hard reset (power button + home button until phone turns off) do anything for the battery?

davidch does this work on the iphone 4,  I did these steps and the battery still runs out fast, also I have noticed the wifi connects and disconnects about every 5 sec. has anyone noticed that.
