I used my Apple Apps/ iTunes store password like some of the others have tried and it worked for me..
If you haven't tried, you should! Good luck!

Well, this is what worked for me, running 10.7.2 OS X Lion:

Verified that the password was stored in my keychain, and tried entering that, no go. So, opened up ~/Library/iTunes/Mobile Backups/ and deleted all the contents of that folder, but NOT the folder itself. Reopened iTunes and viola! That same password worked! Good luck to all you Windows users!

I had the same issue ... it seems the original passcode I set for my phone was updated but the keychain access password was set to a previous one.

Open up the Keychain Access application, click on the "login" keychain with Category set to "Passwords", double click on the iPhone Backup, then at the bottom of the panel make sure that "Show Password" has a checkmark in the box. If you're asked for the "login" keychain, enter the master password for your computer (if you're an administrator), click ok (if it asks whether keychain access wants to use your confidential info stored in "iPhone Backup" in your keychain, enter your master password again and click on "Allow") and the iPhone backup panel should then show you what the password was set to originally so you can enter it in iTunes and do the restore.

    Worked for me...

I gave my self a hard time trying to find out all possible solutions for this..

In the case u do not have the password stored in the keychain access....

    try the following solutions:-

    Passwords can be:-

    1) computer password

    2) itunes account password

    3) password set on mobile

    4) sny prior passwords used on computer

    5) ur own device name

if this all does not work

goto the hiden folder and in the backup location find ur backup

then open the Info.plist via text wrangler

and the string name there can b ur password

    location of backup files:

    ~library\application support\mobile sync\backup\"ur backup file"\Info.plist

    Hi,

I found the info.plist file thank you. However, as my luck goes, the line in particular was not there. any other suggestions?

If you encrypt an iPad backup in iTunes and then forget your password, you will not be able to restore from backup and your data will be unrecoverable. If you forget the password, you can continue to back up and use the device, however you will not be able to restore the encrypted backup to any device without the password. You do not need to enter the password for your backup each time you back up or sync.

Did you try your computer lock screen password yet?  I had this problem and that was the password I had set it to.
