Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

When I got the iPhone4s and had no apps running on a 100% charge it was draining at 1% every 1hr

After reading through the apple tips on saving battery life it now drains 1% every 1.5hrs

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

I was told Apple & Android devices drain batteries fast but charge fast also. I find this true as it charges fast.

I'm pretty sure 200hrs of standby is achievable but with everything turned off and screen at lowest brightness.

We're talking bare minimum here. I believe that's how Apple got their numbers.

Let me know what you think.

My phone was losing 20% per hour, despite updating to 5.0.1 and turning off Time Zone Detection.  I went to the Apple store, but couldn't talk to a genius becasue I didn;t have an appointment.  THe greeter suggested turning off Siri.  We did that and I went home with an appointment to come back the next day.

Well, the next morning, I noticed that I was no longer losing power.  In fact, I was only losing 1% per hour in standby.  I turned Siri back on to test if that was the problem, but the power drain never came back.

My phone now has about 100 hours of standby time with email push turned on, Siri turned on, etc.  I guess Siri was somehow caught in a loop and was using all the processor power (the phone was very hot during the draining period.

Maybe this will help someone else.

I'll try those steps tonight and let you know how it goes.

I'll have to learn how to use iTunes as I'm new to the Apple experience.

I'll probably search on the net how to wipe and reload my device fresh with the latest OS etc.

Just incase you were wondering, the previous phone I had was a Blackberry 9700 and I'm in IT so work with RIM devices on a daily basis.

    We'll see how it goes

After work I guess it's time to do some homework haha...

New iPhone user.  4s 64GB unlocked although using UK O2 network.  iOS 5.

Purchesed unlocked phone in Meadowhall on Saturday 12th, 9:40am.  Took until around 4pm for micro SIM to be activated by O2.  Alarmed by battery drain on Sunday, so did a mega-charge.  Decided not to update to 5.0.1 after seeing posts on this forum.

A couple of apps d/loaded. Turned off location services, bluetooth and data over 3G network - plus anything else to maximise battery-life (eg turning display down) and any data d/loaded over home WiFi network.

Phone fully charged at 10pm on Monday night (14th Nov). Left phone to discharge on standby to see what battery life-time is  Dropped to 86% after 24 hrs, 78% after 36 hrs, down to 54% at 9pm Thursday night.

Decided to see the effect of d/loading a couple more apps. D/loaded iPlayer, ITVPlayer, Tube Maps & Shazam.  In the 20 minutes to 9:20, phone went from 54% to 50% and that's using WiFi and not the phone's 3G connection.

Looking at the usage stats it says:4h 58min since last charge which is totally wrong - must be about 25mins at most (phone has been turned on for approx 10 sec to check battery percentage).  Says 3d 0h on standby (which is correct).  Cell usage says 8min.

So - is my battery-life pants or is this reasonable??

Compared to my non-smartphone SE K750i it seems horrifying.  Use the phone and watch the battery level plummet like a lead balloon.

Do I have a "window" within which I can return the phone to Apple for a full refund if dissatisfied?  Purchased with Barclaycard for extra protection if goods faulty and Applw refuse to help.

Comments please folks - especially if I have a limited time to return the phone.

    Thanks in advance,

    RB

I was getting 100 hrs standby also until I turned off more things.

    See the link below:

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

I now get 150 hrs standby but still wondering how I can get to 200 hrs

The battery still drains quite quickly when using the phone moderately though.

Also, it seems like there are more GSM phones with the problems than CDMA.

Of course there are more GSM phones out there to HAVE problems. But it also may be an issue with the GSM commication with the cells.

May be  it's true that in most cases the problem occurs on GSM phones

    rather than on CDMA.

In my experience, i am using a GSM Phone. As i already explain

i had the battery drain  for a week despite  of many settings changes  and

    IOS5 reinstall.

Now it's the third day since battery drain is stopped.

After a full night stand by, 99% remaining .and usage time reported as 2 minutes!

And yet i have restored my last IP4 full backup with a lot of apps and mail accounts

    music an videos..

I just kept some settings off like for location zone and push emails.

So it's clear that if you can see your phone working fine for several

days, even if problem is back to morrow, that means that it's not hardware

issue and hence could be sofware fixed.

Maybe I suffering the mild effect of this issue. I don't know.

In addition, I am on iPhone 4S 64Gb with 17.6Gb of music, videos, photos and apps.

Those big apps are mainly racing games.

I agree that after this update the battery is very bad.

Thanks for sharing Kurzweil's work. Its certainly is very interesting.

As for 4S battery life. Try doing this,

    1. Settings>Location Service ... disable all location services you do not need. In particularly Facebook because it drains the battery a lot.

Scroll down to the bottom at Settings>Location services>System Services ... Disable Setting Time zone, location based iAds, Diagnostic & Usage.

    2. Settings>Notification>Calendar ... turn off the Notification Centre.

    3. Settings>General>Reset ... do Reset All Settings. Doing this will not wipe out your iPhone. It will just Reset the network settings, location warning, keyboard dictionary, etc... but it will clear up some corrupted data there. Generally this will help.

Try these 3 steps first... if it still drains a lot, try the following,

    4. Drain your battery down to 1%. Then charge it up using USB from PC ... not the charger. The charger output 1.0 A ( x 5V from USB ... you get 5W power). From PC, output is only 0.5A x 5V = 2.5W power. Charging is slower but trickle charge 4S helps the battery retain its charge better. I think it takes about 3-3.5 hours to charge full from USB/PC compared to slightly below 2 hours using iPhone charger.

If after doing the above still could not solve your battery issues (mine with iOS 5.0 was ok up to step 4, but not iOS 5.0.1).... plug you iPhone to a charger (any charger), from iPhone, access your iCloud ... set it up if you havent. Back up your iPhone data to iCloud. if you do not have enough storage (only 5GB is free), go to details and select the apps you need its data backup, choose only those you really need and leave those unnecessary ones out. Back up your camera roll to your PC/Mac manually as it could be too big to backup to iCloud.... once you have it setup, make sure you are on Wifi ...  tap backup to iCloud from your iPhone. It will take a while if the file is huge.

Once backup to iCloud is completed, plug your iPhone to PC/Mac and launch iTunes 10.5.1 (make sure you have 10.5.1)

Click Restore. It will automatically initiate a download of iOS 5.0.1 ipsw for iPhone 4S. Wait for the whole process to finish, ie. download, restore software/firmware.

Once its done, do not set up your iPhone from iTunes. Set it up on your iPhone. Go through the selection. When prompted, select restore from iCloud (from your iphone backup earlier). Keep your iphone plugged into iTunes while restoring backup from iCloud. Because while restoring from iClouds, some data will be synced from iTunes if you plug in, e.g. music, video, etc... unless you bought these content from iTunes store. Apps will be downloaded from App Store from the cloud.

Once it's all done restored. Turn off your iPhone,.. and turn it on again.

Now, hopefully your battery wont be draining so fast anymore. Usually it wont after this. But you need to charge your battery at least 4-5 cycles to stabilize the charge on the battery. I dont know why... but battery life seems to get better and better for me after a few charge cycles after all the above work.

Good luck. Let us know if it works for you.

@lisenz - I meant this, for people who don't have the patience to go back to page 369. Honestly, if I had an Iphone I would try it, i.e. the full 800mb because perusing the thread I have NEVER seen someone who reinstalled the 800mb release not have some improvement over the draining. So that's why. Further this salvages the restore. It may be time consuming I agree but hey.

    Good luck.

    @ Mark Topham

Interesting info about the connections made. With the help from whois IP lookup I see the following connections are made:

    184.51.156.57      Akamai Technologies Inc., Cambridge

    17.173.66.50       Apple Inc., Cupertino

    17.174.4.4           Apple Inc., Cupertino

    209.85.145.193    Google Inc., Mountain View

    17.149.36.198      Apple Inc., Cupertino

With Apple and Google I think you can track this down to iCloud and Gmail (exchange) usage, did you try disabling these?
Akamai is a little harder but I found this info on them that suggest traffic could also come from Apple / Yahoo / Microsoft services running:

Akamai serves Web content and applications for many of the world's leading enterprises and government agencies, including Apple, FedEx, Trend Micro, Yahoo, Microsoft, and over 2,800 others. We do not provide server access to our customers, and are not an ISP who provides Internet access. All of our servers are designed to deliver Web content and none are directly accessible by "users" or "customers". Below is some useful information that should assist in explaining why you'd see certain Akamai traffic on your computer.
