I had a VERY old AOL itunes account ask for authorization recently, for some reason. It rattled me for a minute because it wouldn't accept my password, birthdate, etc. I then just replaced that id with my present Apple id and password and it worked beautifully.

I am having this same issue as well. I went to set up itunes on my laptop and couldn't log in with my old AOL ID, I had to make an Apple ID. The AOL id is linked to my old desktop that is currently in storage. Is there someway to link them that I haven't been able to find yet?

There is no way to link or merge Apple IDs.
If you've forgotten the password, reset it here: https://iforgot.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/DSiForgot.woa/wa/iforgot

This was an AOL account and an Apple account. I can not access the AOL account anymore.

I understand that... it's still an Apple ID though.
Frankly, if you're unable to access the email account tied to the Apple ID there may be nothing you can do.

it wasn't an AOL email address, It was through my AOL instant messanger account. Itunes used that as my account username. I set it up originally back aournd 2005 or so.
