MrMnu - i think this is part of the problem with my phone as well. Additionally, there seem to be less people who have bought sprint or verizon with gcm sim unlocked than the people who have a gsm unlocked phone here. I dont have a US sim that i can try to activate it with over here. Initially i spent time with sprint and apple USA making sure i did not have a locked one by mistake. after having no success with trying all the possible steps as well as buying 3 different sim cards from operators in order to verify, i checked with apple india (i had applied a full restore by that point and maybe some wrong profile settings got updated, not sure), apple india had very very very ill informed reps and one of them even said he was a manager , a technical engineer and a senior support rep ALL on the same call. They did not seem to know much about the 4S at all and were giving me complete hogwash under the cloak of being apple employees. However the one thing that they mentioned stuck - they said it was locked. So i spent another 5 hours on the phone with apple and sprint and final conclusion was that it should not be locked and ive been escalated many times higher and higher till i managed to get this far.
Since my phone is still not working and on the IMEI that i emailed you (990000) series, i am still struggling with this. What do you mean about those people that did not activate on home soil , how will it be fixed in 1-2 days or by 25th? Please could you elaborate?

Airtel Bangalore , BSNL Bangalore, Vodafone Bangalore - No luck on IMEI series starting (990000)
Anybody else have this series at all? Or anyone out there with a CDMA 4S unlocked to GCM networks on the sim slot?

Well, i bought my phone from Canada, but did not activated it using a Canadian SIM. I used my Idea SIM to activate my IPhone there, and it was working fine. If the phone needs to be activated on a carrier where it was bought with the carrier SIM, then i think Apple needs to update that too .
My Idea signals still show up here, but cannot make any calls. Vodafone is still not activated . Let's see when it gets activated, will check if it works. Hope it works .

Hey psdeepak. I know your phone is a CDMA phone. But if it is unlocked it should work fine here now. As such """those people that did not activate on home soil , how will it be fixed in 1-2 days or by 25th?""" What i meant was that, when you buy your phone in the country like canada or Australia for example, it should be activated then and there. For instance people who purchased there iphone's in Canada or UK or anywhere outside India and did not activate, they are the ones in majority not catching signal bars.
Regarding will be fixed in 1-2 days beacuse all the GSM Sim operators have the latest IMEI lists provided from APPLE USA which they did not had before and have already updated there databases respectfully. Hence now many people who reported or did not report it about this issue on this forum have there iphone 4S working.
By activation all i mean is when you buy your phone from Canada for example, we need to put a Canadian Sim like rogers, fido etc and then activate it through itunes. You will also get a message saying your iphone has been activated and is unlocked now. It happened with all my 4 iphone 4S.
Let me know if I can help answer any other questions you have.

Hi MrMnu, Yes, i think so. Will have to keep this in mind the next time i buy an apple product .
Cannot send it back to Canada now to get activated, so will have to wait until it starts working here in India.
Thanks for the help. Let's hope it all gets sorted out soon.

Thanks for laying all your odds on the India launch, when our fancy toys will start working. Truly appreciate that you are so concerned. By the way, which part of the planet earth do you belong and which is the toy that you fancy? Are they the naughty ones? :))

My iPhone 4S which I bought from UK is also suffering the same issues.
On AIRTEL Kerala, occasionally I'm able to make some calls and use 3G. If it is an IMEI related issue, then how can I make calls and use 3G ? I'm not sure, but I suspect something else other than IMEI.
Most of the time my phone shows the operator name and signal bars, but when I try make calls, getting call failed message. Now I’m trying to believe it as an IMEI issue and hope to get it resolved shortly.

Harish, you are in a much advanced stage ... Most of us (apart from naughty Tim I think :P) started on this post with nothing but "No service", where there was no data/calls/sms. It's working now but is not consistent.

For all who are still facing problems, my brief history with the iPhone 4S.
I bought a factory-unlocked phone from the Canada Apple Online store (NOT the retail store). I activated the phone for the first time in India using an India SIM (not a Canada SIM). In my case, iTunes never said 'Congratulations, you have an unlocked phone' or anything like that. I understand you get this message if your phone is a 'Contract-Free' or 'SIM-Free' phone. I believe these are what you can buy from the retail stores directly. So, maybe for these 'Contract-Free' or 'SIM-Free' phones, you may need to activate it first in the host country, though I frankly don't see why and certainly no other phone company seems to be handcuffing their customers like this.
When I first activated the phone, (Nov 1), I got the now famous 'No Service'. I tried several SIM cards, cut/micro-SIM, Airtel/Vodafone, etc. All to no avail. BTW, I'm in the Delhi circle. Several calls to Airtel and Apple were completely unhelpful, until I found I was not alone (i.e., this forum).
On Nov 5th, I got a hold of senior folks at Airtel who told me that this is the first time they're hearing of this. The phone they were given from Apple for testing was working fine (ahead of the launch). We compared specs of the phone (serial numbers, IMEI numbers). Then we started collating serial numbers on this forum of working and not-working phones, looking for a pattern. Someone the forum pointed out the IMEI pattern (i.e,. those starting with 0130 were not working, while the older 012 series was working).
Airtel told me they were in touch with Apple and that Apple had not updated an entire series of IMEI numbers before shipping them. In India, given our higher security on mobile telecom networks, apparently phones are only 'authorised' if they are registered on the GSMA site. Several people on the forum checked their IMEI's and they were not updated.
On Nov 9th, on a trip to London, my phone worked absolutely fine with a local SIM there.
By Nov 11th, when I had returned, my phone was working in New Delhi and several others across India on Airtel, Vodafone, BSNL, Aircel, etc. were starting to work.
Airtel told me they were doing an 'off-cycle' update, now that Apple had updated the GSMA site. But, the off-cycle update was being done circle-by-circle. I assume other carriers were doing the same. As we identified circles that were not working (bangalore, punjab, etc.), Airtel tracked these and are addressing them. Again, I assume the other carriers are doing the same.
If you're still getting 'No Service' with your carrier, ask them to do an off-cycle update, explaining that the GSMA website was only updated recently. I know several people on the forum are skeptical that this is indeed the answer, and frankly I do not know myself, but it seems to have worked for a large number of people.
By the way, I've updated to iPhone 5.0.1, and just recently the iTunes 10.5.1.
Call Failed. When my phone was first working in India, I could receive calls and send/receive messages, but could not make any calls. I kept getting the 'Call Failed' message. So I reset the phone back to factory settings and set it up as a new phone and it worked well. Then I restored the most recent back up and it crapped out again - i.e., again 'Call Failed'. So I backed it up from an older backup (Nov 7th or so), and it worked perfectly. And has been perfectly since.
When the iPhone 4S launches in India, maybe we're all hoping these problems will be fixed. Maybe Apple globally will track the status of the carriers and be proactive in making sure their products work - as opposed to being reactive. Maybe.
There seems to be a lot of issues getting fixed, with no explanation of what was wrong in the first place. It's been frustrating, and continues to be so. Frankly, I'm still nervous when I travel - and end up carrying a second phone just in case. If the 4S weren't such an incredible product, I'd have dumped it.
I hope this is helpful to all of you still facing problems.

Hey guys! I have already ordered iphone 4s unlocked from US and it should be with me around first or second week of December. I am really worried that it won't work reading all the comments on this post but I do have hope that the scenario will be better after Nov 25th. Does anybody have any idea whether people who posted here earlier could got their phones to work? Any one here who has been able to use 4s on the Vodafone Maharashtra-Goa circle? Any suggestions?
