Oct 29, 2011 10:04 PM in response to arthuralex77by moniet,"Multiple insertions of a headphone did not help, but hilariously sucking hard on the headphone input hole did the trick (at least for now.) Hope I didn't inhale something a toxic but my iPhone seems to be back to normal."
This did the trick! Thanks!

Oct 30, 2011 9:43 AM in response to SoCalSkippyby charliepixhall,Tried repeatedly putting in and pulling out the headphones to no avail.
Rebooting didn't work. Blowing didn't work.
Resorted to taking it out of the case and giving the headphone socket a quick suck.
Hey presto. (spit out whatever was stuck)

After dropping my 4S into the toilet, I thought i'd never get it working properly again...but sucking works! Nov 14, 2011 2:51 PM in response to awillimdby Imamimi24,I had the same thing happen to me but when I upgraded to the OS 5 it went away. Now it auto updated to OS 5.0.1 the problem is back. It comes and goes. I restored back to before it updated to OS 5.0.1. So far it's ok but I've not listen to anything for any long time to really see if it's fixed. I too called Apple for support and we did a complete restore. Not to mention that went the new iTunes update lost my entire library of music, audio books and movies. They were able to recovery some but not all :( so I still trying to get my iPad 2 and iPhone 3GS to working as the now I'm also having wifi issues.

Nov 14, 2011 7:31 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby checkers17,I know this post is kind of old, but I have the Iphone 4 and just had this problem a second time. On the first time having the problem I thought my phone was messed up so I took it to the Apple store where they replaced my phone. This time I just thought it was kind of strange me having the same problem again after I used my aux jack plug in my car. So I googled to see if anyone else had the same problem and to my surprise I see many others have. Well I tried the "jack sex" option with the headphones as well as the aux cord, but it didn't work. So I finally used a q-tip my breaking off one of the ends and it actually worked. After a few sticks of going in deep it worked my phone got out of headphone mode and back to regular mode. Apple needs to really get this fixed. Hopes this helps anyone else that has this problem.

Nov 18, 2011 9:52 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby montereypat,Well my issue came down to operator error. After all the poking and whatnot, I deciding to to take the phone out of the protective case. And there it was the mute switch just above the volume buttons was on the whole time. There goes my excuse for not answering when family calls.
FYI: For symtoms of mute switch...
Only rings and game sounds affected.
Music and videos stream played the audio.
Volume buttons showed as normal without earbuds in or "headphone" with them in.

Nov 20, 2011 2:39 PM in response to bigbillpnsby lewisjn,I agree that moisture is the likely culprit. My wife's phone was near the sink this morning and may have been splashed a little...problem started later in the day during a call. After reading all these posts and trying all including the sucking routine it worked after a few more draws on the headhpone connection AND the speaker area. Clearly will move her charger to a safer area!
Thanks for the "technical" solutions!

Nov 21, 2011 2:46 PM in response to SoCalSkippyby akferd,Same problem and nothing was working to fix it. I finally hit the jack receptacle with canned air and that did the trick. Problem occured while using the phone in the rain.
