Q: New Mac Mini with LED 24" LED Display

Hello all,

I just got myself a new Mac Mini yesterday. I connected it to my existing 24" LED Display. Prior to this, my display was connected my MacBook (2009) and I have never had any problems. Since yesterday (connected to my Mac Mini), my LED goes black from time to time (0.1 s randomly). There are quite a few theories about why it does this. Since I have never had this problem before, it seems to me that it maybe something to do with the new Thunderbolt port (on MAC mini) which is used for the display as well.  In fact I have read an interesting article

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/thunderbolt_macbook_pro_suffers_flickerin g_display_issues/

I suspect the same problem is happening with the new MAC mini.

I am keen to see if there will be a firmware fix from Apple, on either the MAC mini or the Display.

Charles

Just to chime in - I've also been following this thread and would not have been able to sort out the blackout problem without the help I found here so thanks!

It's not directly related but the bottom of the Apple support page linked to by IFrodo says :

"firmware update information is not easily available via System Information or System Profiler."

Does anyone know if this actually means "...not available at all..." or is there any way to reveal the firmware update info?

    Thanks again.

Ihave had this problem well before installion Lion. My 24in 2009 Cinema Display regularly blinks off and on and then goes completely blank until I do a power cycle. Last year I dragged it all the way to a local Genius Bar (it was covered by AppleCare) and, of course, worked perfectly when the switched it on. I was given the impression I was imagining things. The problem continued to happen, but infrequently. Now it is happening every day since I installed Lion.

Update applied and everything working. No more flickers so far. What a joy!

I tried the firmware update but got the message that "Your computer does not require this update" so I didn't proceed. The Cinema Display is connected to a Spring 2011 iMac but I have previously had the same problems, including blackouts, when connected to a 2010 MacBook Pro and a 2010 11in MacBook Air. Thanks for your input.

So.... practically one month has passed and the solution is yet to be clearly okayed (i read good and bad messages on the forum...)

I bought a mac mini, and two days later (the firware didn't exist at that time) i returned it. Almost two weeks later, here the firmware. But gone the mcmini. I'm still shaking at the thought of going back to buy it back and arriving at home for it not to work. Can the people who have applied it just say here if it's very much working and since how many days or so they don't have a flicker !

    Thanks a lot!

Marion, I posted on Oct 1 after downloading the patch and everything is great. The link is on page 9. You can read my blog on page 10. I had similar concerns and finally took the leap, rather than return the mini for a 3rd one. Thanks to Spunky. No worries here.

I've had the video problem for over a week with my mac min i7 and a 24" Cinema Display. Today I installed the firmware update. The firmware appears to have fixed my problem, no more flickering. Yeah!

    Hi

Sorry if it was just a typo but I would understand 'ultérieur' to mean 'later' i.e. you need to be at __least__ on 10.7.1.

Any chance the new Macmini came with SL and not Lion? (I recently bought an old-stock iMac which needed upgrading as soon as I got it home).

I'm french and I can tell you that the correct translation for "Cette mise à jour requiert Mac OS X 10.7.1 ou ultérieur." is "This update requires Mac OS X 10.7.1 or later", if it were before, the french word would have been "inférieur".

So french lesson of the day:

    - Ultérieur = later or above

    - Inférieur = before or lower

    ;)

Oh GOD i never meant to say something so wrong, the stress i was under made me completely lose my mind !

Of course i meant "later". And i succeed to install the update btw. I just download the "software update" and here i am :

mailing you from my brand new AND WORKING macmini !

Thanks a lot everyone for all the support we had and have for each others in this complicated matter !

I have a 27" Thunderbolt display which exhibits the same symptoms (there's been many threads on this).  But I'm skeptical of trying this firmware update which is for a 24" Cinema Display.  Running the package gives the "You don't needs this update" message any way.

I've opened a support ticket with AppleCare... hopefully they can give some direction.
