Those all-in-one gadgets all depend on very complex software which often has serious bugs, and may break with even a minor Mac OS upgrade. I suggest you avoid them if you want an easy life. But if you insist on buying one, make sure it's a current model, not a discontinued one, and check the manufacturer's website carefully for information about Lion compatibility. Also do a web search to see whether others have reported problems with the particular model you're considering. Don't expect the device to have a long lifespan.

I've generally had good luck with HP printers and all-in-ones, although I don't use them for FAXing through the computer any longer. I suspect that FAX will be the function that is the most problematic not just now, but moving forward as FAXing becomes less and less common in favor of all-electronic means of transmission. Printing and scanning are working fine in Lion on my Photosmart C6150, which is a few years old at this point. For the most part HP is keeping up with Mac OS X releases and has been integrating better starting with Leopard and Snow Leopard (scanning, for example, is integrated with Preview). That said, Linc is right that there are no guarantees with printers, even relatively recent ones, and even from industry leaders such as HP and Epson. I've had other HP printers that HP fully supported for only a year or so. You can only do the best you can to choose a printer that is well-supported when you buy it, and either hope that the manufacturer keeps up or plan to stick with Lion for as long as you have your printer.
I guess my other recommendation would be that unless you are a professional photographer, don't buy a top-of-the-line printer. Mid-range printers are plenty capable and so cheap these days, especially relative to the cost of ink or toner if you print a lot, that you should just budget to replace them every few years as they become obsolete.

Thanks for both responses. They are helpful. I do a lot of photography but I use my Epson Stylus 1900 which is just fine so I don't need an expensive all in one. I don't fax that much either but do like to have the capability on the rare occasion that I have to use it. Manual faxing isn't a problem for me. I will check out the HP's. Thanks much for the input.

I've been using a low end, wired, 3-in-1 Epson for years, I think I paid $65 for it. My friend who has an Epson Stylus Pro is envious of the way mine prints.
Like Glenn, I don't look for fax functionality in a printer. The way I figure it scan, copy & print have been functions of a copier since the first Xerox b&w. Fax has nothing to do with print functions.
I wouldn't buy a stove that made ice cubes, or a car that did laundry either.
