I received my iPhone 4S last week & noticed a slight rattling when I placed it on a table or even a couch. I narrowed down the problem to the power/sleep button being lose. I also tested the rattling noise against my friends' iPhone 4 & 4S & they were not experiencing as loud of a rattle.

So, I took it into the store & the guy told me it was normal & not to worry; he directed me to the display phones out front & asked me to see if they rattled too (they did not). Out of frustration & time constraints, I left the store. By the time I got home I was still upset, so I called the Apple support line. They guy was wicked nice & let me explain my concerns in full detail (told me it WAS a problem & shouldn't have been told otherwise). He gave me the choice to exchange phones @ a Verizon store or Apple Store (he found phones in stock @ an Apple Store) & put it on hold for me to pick up tomorrow.

Since many of us have the rattle issue, and since this topic was started by Apple, can i assume that the problem is being taken serious and that Apple will come with a solution for this? I haven't seen any comment by Apple Staff yet to this discussion, which would be very much appreciated.

Admittedly, I was one of the loudest complainers about this issue. That said, I do not foresee anyone at Apple addressing this seriously (at least not with this hardware rev) as it does in fact seem normal!

When I went in for a Genius appt. a few weeks ago for the lock up issue many people are seeing, I had some time to waste while I waited. I picked up almost every single display iPhone 4 and 4s and every single one of them had the rattle when you tapped on the back...my Genius even gave me his personal phone to tap on and it too rattled which of course "shocked him" .

As others have mentioned, it is probably just something with the camera and phones that don't rattle (my wifes 4) are the exception and not the rule.

    Just my opinion of course!

Apple did not start this thread (tsmithband did) and Apple does not officially respond to any posts in any thread... it's a user-to-user forum only.

I took my iPhone 4s back to apple store an the so called genesis in the store told me it was the vibrator witch sits on a rod and that is causing the rattling. I went on to tell him thats there's no way it is the vibrator an told him it is the camera. I showed him wen u tap the screen when using camera to focus the camera the rattling stopped for acre seconds until the camera went out of focus agen. The genius told me I could change it but he couldnt garantee that the new 1 he gave me wouldn't rattle. I asked if he would check it first before giving me it an he said no. So I didn't swap it an thought would leave it an see if it got worse as the geniuses own iPhone 4s was rattling. Not happy about this as I can't understand why apple haven't sorted or done anything to get to the bottom of this problem.

Yes iPhone 4 and 4S both rattle. SIM tray in the phone and/or camera lens.

    Slight rattle is normal

This is far from normal as the phone didn't do this when I first got it and also the rattle has got worse. The 3GS didn't rattle and no other phone of any make rattles. If you think this is normal ur very much mistaken.

I'm on my 3rd replacement (4S) each have had this SLIGHT rattle.

iPhone 4- I went through 5 of those, all equipped with a SLIGHT rattle.

This isn't an issue. It's the SIM tray..

We should skip to the 4S's screen tint and seek answers.

If you have a rattle, REPLACE/SWAP the phone.

When I was in apple store the genius there told me if I swapped it for a replacement then I wouldnt b able to swap it agen if anythn else broke or went wrong. So how did u mange to get 3 replacements. It's defentlity NOT the sim tray the rattle is the camera wen I tap the screen to auto focus the camera it stops the rattle for a few seconds and the rattle is coming from the top of the phone not the middle were the sim tray is. If I was to swap it and something else went wrong with it would I b able to get it replaced.

If Verizon version of the 4 are rattling, it can't be the SIM tray.

The iPhone 4 had a simple rattle to it when u tap the back of the phone, the SIM tray. This rattle also exists in the 4S .

NOW, if your particular phone has a severe rattle and/or you believe it's the camera lens rattling (which has occurred in many cases) then simply replace the phone.

@Jish2010 , they can tell you anything they want. If you have another issue separate from the current issue (on your replacement phone), they will most likely replace it. (yellow tint, loose home button, battery issues, etc.)  I would replace the phone if you are worried about a rattle, I'm sure the next phone will have a slight rattle aswell, they all do..

I'm on my 3rd phone because of a loose home button, then yellow screen tint. I'm debating going back because this washed out dull yellow screen is so frustrating, apple employees act clueless to the issue. No answer has been disclosed and I haven't been handled seriously.

I have the same prob. When i lay my iphone 4s on its back. There's this rattling sound in the apple logo. But when i shake it, there's no sound. What do u suggest me to do? Is there anything i can do on the apps or what? Just to make the rattle sound diminish? Or is it rly the hardware which has a problem? Pls give me an advice on what to do, initially. Thanks :/

I've had two replacement phones sent out and now all Apple can offer me is a refund.  They are definitlely not ackknowedging it as a widespread fault, I've checked several friends phones all purchased over a wide range of time and they all do it.

This is pretty frustrating as it definitely seems like a design fault.  My big issue is that after several months worth of use this rattle could result in the lose item actually breaking off and the phone could stop working and I will have little to no comeback with them for it.

Has anyone opened the phone up to see what's causing the rattle?

iPhone 4S 16Gb black rattle noise in top right corner..when power/sleep button is pressed the rattle stops...if would be the camera or the lense then the pictures would look bad,or the focus or anything for that matter

It's the autofocus lens thats making the rattling noise!! I've had an HTC Legend, Google Nexus and they also had this "issue" Nothing to worry about because it's perfectly normal! On my Legend I could actually hear the focusing inside the camera whilst taking a photo! The buttons make a little rattle too but it's not a dealbreaker for me:)
