Nov 26, 2011 8:43 PM in response to art_in_motionby kateholland,I'm on the 3G and have been so happy with the phone and software - even though I'm out of date! I also am sufferring from battery nightmares since upgrading the software , going from 80% to 0 in a matter of minutes when I use any app. I have followed all the advice given, and had no success. I tried the IOS5 update, but no luck. I hope the fix comes soon.

Nov 27, 2011 1:51 AM in response to art_in_motionby Jeeeperz,Ey guys, listen up!!
I was reading around and saw a post mentioning that battery issue have improved when doing a restore DIRECTLY FROM A PC USING iTUNES , NOT VIA WIRELESS!!
I have tried it, and glad to say it kinda worked for me! Left iPad2 on standby for 2 hrs, and it was still the same % as when I first left it! ONCE AGAIN, DO NOT UPDATE VIA OVER THE AIR METHOD BUT CONNECT TO PC WITH YOUR ORIGINAL APPLE USB USING ITUNES software!!
This maybe the root of the problem when users are updating via wireless method! Therefore not updating fully, i.e. 'memory leak'?, who knows.... but it's only my assumption, don't take my word for it. Anyway, battery is back to what it use to be before.
Let me know if anyone is in the same boat has me and their battery problem was fixed using the method I mentioned here.
Cheers, hope that helps some people.

Nov 27, 2011 2:41 AM in response to Jeeeperzby jasonfromcitrus heights,I think your right. I noticed yesterday that ever since I did a sync from my PC, my battery seems to be lasting again.

Nov 27, 2011 7:11 AM in response to jasonfromcitrus heightsby Tikatoo,You may possibly be right. When I initially installed 5.0.1, it was OTA, not via iTunes. I wonder if that caused a corrupted update.
I did the "fix" suggested by DavidCH, and I also synced via iTunes the following day. Last night, the usage on my iPhone 4S was:
Usage: 4 hours, 20 minutes
Standby: 2 days, 7 hours
23% battery left
HOWEVER, I still have most location services, iCloud and push turned off. I love that my battery life has been restored but I would like to be able to use all that the OS offers.

Nov 27, 2011 11:43 AM in response to art_in_motionby sandeepfromdoha,I bought iphone 4S just 2 days ago.
Here are the Problems with this Crap new fone from apple:
Fone was not able to read the micro Sim right from the moment it was unpacked.
After replacing 2 Sims from Vodafone and hard reboot it got started accepting the SIm but it was throwing INVALID SIM and SIM FAILURE errors in every half an hour. So i upgraded the OS to 5.0.1 in a hope to get rid of SIM failure errors. After successfull update, the fone started getting hot on standby and it started eating the battery.
After checking on google and apple forums for 1 day, finally I decided to give the fone back from Where i bought it. They told me to take it to the service center. On my way to service center, when the battery was around 19% i put it on standby but after 1-2 min when i tried to use it, it got blank. There was no charge in the fone.
So i gave the fone to the service center and told him also about this new problem which i faced on my way to the service center.
I m new customer of apple and this is the first product i ever bought from Apple but my experience is very bad.
This shows the inefficiency of testing department of Apple.
I think this will be my last product from apple. And i cannot recommend such crap product to anyone.

Nov 27, 2011 1:36 PM in response to art_in_motionby Sammy Herrington,I am running 5.0.1 on my iphone 3Gs. Didn't have battery problems before updating. Drains unbelievably fast. I am afraid to go anywhere without my charger in my pocket. I need to count on my phone and can't do that when the battery drains in less than a day with minimal usage.

Nov 27, 2011 3:28 PM in response to sandeepfromdohaby jasonfromcitrus heights, sandeepfromdoha -> I can understand that it is frustrating to have a crap phone but honestly, you can't blame Apple for this because odds are that there will always be a phone that someone buys that will have a defect that occurred during manufacturing. Don’t let this once in a blue moon experience turn yourself away from a great phone. You just need to get them to replace it and chances are the new one will be perfect. (If you happen to get another lemon then that is just super bad luck).

Nov 27, 2011 3:31 PM in response to jasonfromcitrus heightsby michaelfromgibsonia,It's not a"phone" or hardware problem. It's a software problem. It also does not appear to be happening to a small fraction of users who have some wierd set of apps or settings and the 5.0.1 softwaer that was meant to fix it made some phones worse. It was and is a testing issue broought on my a cultural and leadership issues.

Nov 27, 2011 7:12 PM in response to Jeeeperzby Jeeeperz,An update.as I mentioned earlier, connecting to your pc and doing a restore, I.e reinstalling iOS 5.0.1 again, I am noticing a massive improvement on battery consumption. I don't bout others, but this seemed to be a sign that updating over the air, I.e. wireless, is not the best option, as files may not download properly and get corrupted.
Please post ur findings here for all to know after the pc restore method.
Cheers

Nov 27, 2011 7:15 PM in response to Sammy Herringtonby Jeeeperz,Try restoring ur fone on ur pc using iTunes. U may notice a massive improvement. Or try davidCH method of hard resetting your device and draining fully and charge fully the battery.

Nov 28, 2011 12:06 AM in response to michaelfromgibsoniaby wildernesshike,Here's how much time I got on one charge with my iPhone 4:
87 hours standby and 7 hours and 14 minutes of usage. That's more than 94 hours. That's is plenty of battery time for me.
And for when I go hiking and want even more battery time, I have a Mophie battery case that only weighs 2 ounces and is very thin and more than doubles the battery time.
I have the ios 5.01 update, and I'm not seeing any problems with rapid battery drain that other people have been having.
I suspect that the problems other people have been seeing have been caused by a combination of things:
1) The iPhone 4S has one third less standby time than the iPhone 4, as Apple clearly states in the specs pages.
2) People think that standby means not using the phone while the screen is turned on. Actually, the screen should be off when the phone is not being used; this mode allows it to still take calls, etc.
3) Some people have push or fetch turned on for email.
4) Some people think apps are closed when they are still in the background; some of them do use battery unless they are fully closed.
5) Some folks have yet to let their batteries discharge to zero before recharging.
6) Some people have every available feature running.
7) Some people really do have something wrong, like a bad battery or hardware, but I think they represent a tiny fraction of all iPhone owners, most of whom are very happy with their phones' battery time.
Here's what I do to maximize my iPhone's battery time: I either turn off my phone completely or I turn off the screen without fully shutting off the device (which is standby mode). I also close all the apps that had been running in the background. I also have all notifications off, and I leave iAds and setting time zone off. Everything is off in iCloud except Find My iPhone. I let my battery run down and fully recharge it once a month. Most of my location services (maps, hiking, Tripadvisor, augmented reality, Yelp) are set to on, but they are all not showing any activity or are grayed out which means they aren't running. I have wireless sync turned on.

Nov 28, 2011 12:37 AM in response to wildernesshikeby jasonfromcitrus heights,wildernesshik ->
Sorry, I thank you for your opinions but I have to say something...
1) The problem is not JUST happening on the new 4S phones.
2) Many people that own the phones for a long period of time know how long their phone lasts from their normal use. I don’t think there is a single person that thinks "standby" is when the screen is on but not in use.
3) Again, people that own the phones for a long period of time have noticed there was a huge change on the battery life despite the settings being exactly the same before. Checking email and such would not drain the battery that much.
4) Many if not most apps may be in the background but they are not actually running until they are in focus, they are just dormant. The exception is those apps that are specifically designed to do so.
5) Making the battery drain to "zero" is not necessary. Lithium Ion batteries do not need to be "reconditioned". The only reason to do so is to determine its current capacity level, that’s it.
6) Again, these same people know their phone and how long it normally lasted with the same features on before the bug.
7) As you said, a very slim amount of people actually have bad batteries but the fact that the batteries are known to get buggy right after the firmware update makes this a pointless statement.
I don’t mean to sound rude but none of your "tips" make any sense.

Nov 28, 2011 12:52 AM in response to wildernesshikeby spin_dry,Agree wilderness. I use proper power management and have zero complaints about battery life. Shutting off unused apps, Bluetooth, and gps are things I always did on my android as well. I have zero complaints about battery life.

Nov 28, 2011 12:56 AM in response to art_in_motionby cunjuli1,Hi Everyone,
I had the same problem, but after much investagation, I found that after doing the update, bluetooth had been turned on and was constantely running and using battery.
I turned it off, and, "Hey Presto", end of problem.
I hope that this will help some of the people out there.
