Set up spam filters on your email providers site.

Email provider is Apple. Mobile me does not appear to have an option for filtering spam mail. The mail program on my mac book does have an option for "trash" but this does not stop "trash" appearing on my iPhone or ipad.

the Trash folder doesn't really have anything to do with this topic. it's just your mail apps trash bin.

from a quick glance through other forums it appears that mac mail's spam filter is probably engages, just not very effective (it's generally referred to as a "junk mail filter" in the settings.

as another poster suggested, you might want to consider another email provider, or changing your email address if the spam has become that much of an issue.

As you use MobileMe email. Remember you can setup 5 alias addresses that you can use as disposable ones to fill in on websites. Then trash them after a few months and move on to another alias.

My Best Tip is to use a fake email address whenever possible on websites. That way they can't spam you! Apple have not had my real email address for 5 years on this fake account I'm using now...

I use a similar approach, but still periodically change my primary email address. not amount of filtering or secondat address use will completelyneliminate spam, unfortunately.

I have foundnthat gmail's filters are quite effective however.

All great ideas. I am looking for an iPad spam/junk filter for mac mail. Best suggestion is to change email to gmail. Pity as most of my stuff is through mac.

To stop spam on your mac mail, forward the spam mail message to spam@me.com.  Apple will add it to your list of filtered addresses. Cheers!

Not sure how long it takes Spam@me.com to work, but I've been forwarding spam to that address for years with little improvement.  I get a message from "Neiman Marcus" daily, it appears legit but no matter what I do I can't stop it.  I've forwarded the message to spam@me.com daily for the past 7 months... no change.

    Open to suggestions.

I'm not sure as to why it would not be working for you. I haveq done this and have stopped two separate email addresses from sending spam to me. From using only the iPad itself, your only option is to forward as described above. From OS X Mail, a simple rule can be created to mark as spam then by using MobileMe; you can sync mail rules, signatures, etc. to your iPad via MobileMe.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance, let the discussion know if you make any progress. Cheers!

The sad reality is I haven't found any effective options for reducing spam received through mobileme. While other (free) email services have robust junk/spam email filters that will take out hundreds of spam emails automatically and one-click options to add an email sender to both your personal spam-filter list and to the services' suspect list, mobileme does something between nothing and requiring you to individually forwarding each junk mail toSpam@me.com (marginally effective) or to set up a unique filter in the mobileme>preferences>rules. It is perhaps the most disappointing Apple service/product ever offered - and I have been using a Mac for 25 years.

    Spam comes from:

you giving out your e-mail which is then sold (sign up for any surveys? get any mail from any companies? they do sell those addreses upon occasion unless they specifically say they don't)

Get any online coupons? ecards? those sites are usually fronts for e-mail culling to sell addresses.

You having your e-mail on any webpage that a bot can cull it from. (ever put your e-mail on your facebook page?)

Your e-mail provider makes extra money by selling your e-mail address

Mailing lists are hacked, sold, culled

Mac's spam filter isnt' the only one that's junk. the one in outlook is even worse. Block senders and all you do is get them an auto dump in  your trash, it won't block them at all.

the dirty reality is, even with free mail services, companies like yahoo, gmail, hotmail, they all make revenue off every ad view, even if that page view comes from a spammer sending out junk. They make money off the spammers, so why work hard to stop it? Especially when 50-70% of all email sent is spam.

    Skydiver,

I couldn't agree with you more. I think most people are wholly unware of the many ways email addresses are harvested. To the list you mentioned I would add: responding to recipie chain letters, passing along jokes to your friends, sharing political views with coworkers, etc. The problem is, most of those email ultimately are passed along to someone who can harvest the addresses because so many people forward/respond to emails without dropping the addresses of the person who sent them (or worse yet they send massive "respond to all" email blasts). I avoid as many of these alternatives as possible and try to check the "privacy policy"/"what do we do with your information" links on websites I do business with. In fact, I recently had a conversation with Yahoo about the spam they send to their own email subscribers. They seem to believe that becasue they are sending it, it isn't spam. But I pointed out that their unsolicited vacation options and gizmo ads are just as spammy (technical term) as anyone elses.

And it underscores the point I was making about MobileMe - Yahoo has a feature that allows you to checkmark something as spam and from that moment on, email from that source goes in the junk mail folder and you don't have to look at it or sort it from your regular email - and that even goes for Yahoo spam. But I have been marking certain MobileMe emails (recieve through the MobileMe account, not from MobileMe/Apple) as junk for months and it has no effect. They just keep coming - the energizer bunny would blush.

and what do i do if the spam email is coming from my own email (.mac) address?   I use .mac for so many things, i think i'm just screwed.

would be nice if apple realized this is a real problem with them as an email provider.
