Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    Interesting Update:

I am a UK user - Vodafone, and have a fairly bad battery life drainage. Most settings are left as normal - No bluetooth enabled.

I have just got back from Switzerland, so had turned data roaming off. Although accaisionaly turned it on to receive e-mails. Wifi was enabled all the time, and was connected to Wifi until 11:00 am each day - before we went out (get back around 10:00pm)

Photos, Videoing, the odd check of e-mails - and by the end of the day left to around 65%... much much better than I am getting here - with no daily taking pictures or videoing.

    Interesting!!!

If you recall, i advised that i was restoring my iphone 4S as a new phone as opposed to the backup from my iphone 4.

so far, since 8am this morning., and its now 2-23pm, my batteries are :

    Iphone 4 is 96%

    iphone 4S is 74%

both have WIFI and Bluetooth on and push .

its ok, but to be honest, its still bad.. this time yesterday it was on around 40% so its a huge improvement in that sense, but compared to the iphone 4... not good.

I believe it is something to do with the latest software, 5.01, I had the same issue with My 4s when I got it 2 weeks ago, (BAttery lasting 5 hrs with no usage) tried everything, turning off Bluetooth, WiFi, all iCloud & Location services, no change. the only time it holds its charge is when it is on Airplane Mode when it cannot transmit anything, However My son has same phone (4s) and has no issues.  I switched back to my 3Gs, upgraded the SW to 5.01, and restored from a previous back-up, and Now the 3Gs has exactly same problem, Changed the SIM but no difference, eating battery in 4 or 5 hrs without usage. My 4s is gone back for repair or evaluation.

My phone has been draining consistently about 15% every hour with absolutely minimal use. Replying to a text maybe 3 times, and checking email on wifi. I went to the genius bar, and they told me that Apple has sent internal documents outlining the fact that there is a known problem with the iOS 5 software running on iPhone 4S and they should discontinue replacing the 4S for the batttery issue until a new update which is scheduled to deploy soon is rolled out. The genius ended up giving me a new phone either way, and it has been doing the same thing, draining at an alarming pace. I'd recommend just waiting it out, because a DFU restore with no settings doesn't fix the problem, I've tried it twice. Let's just see what the next update does, because it's supposed to fix the problem definitively according to internal Apple communications.

I, like others, have had some battery issues.  I have tried everything I can imagine and have sometimes had good results and then out of the blue the battery life will turn to crap.  One thing that I think has finally fixed it is switching to manual email fetch.  Recently I have noticed that I was getting emails a lot more frequently than the 1hr fetch time that I had it set to.  I even sent myself test emails from my work email and sure enough, they would show up in as little as 5mins and as much as 20 mins, but no where near an hour.  Now that I've set to manual my usage went from < 3hrs per charge to more like 7hrs.  Give it a shot and see if I'm alone.

Load IOS 5.1 beta 1 lastnight.  Went to bed at 100% and woke up at 60%.  All apps closed.  There is no reason it should drop 40% overnight.  Although I will admit on IOS 5.0.1 it used to drop to 30%.  Still unacceptable to me although I realize its still a beta.

One question for who has no battery drain problems: without wifi, leaving 3g on, no music play, few calls (15-20 min max) but a medium internet over 3g usage (safari, facebook, twitter, imessage): what do you have in the usage stats at the end of the battery?

I'm not able to get more than 4 hours of usage in these condition (5-5.30 if I use wifi all day). The standby now is fine (if I don't touch the phone, but all the features on, icloud, 2 exchange, imessage, notifications, gps) I can reach 30-40 hours, but when I use it, it drains so fast.

No more than 4 hours...Is it normal?

I'm getting 4 hours on my 4S, minimal use, two calls, Siri OFF, I just check my emails, Instagram and Facebook.  I purchased it a week and a half ago.  Called a tech, they had me restore, reset, you name it.  I am still getting 4 hours and some minutes usage time.  Unacceptable!!!  This phone is going back!!!!

There are definitely two groups of affected iPhone users: 1) those suffering from battery hardware issues, such as extremely rapid drain and unusually warm (phone) to the touch; and 2) those suffering from software issues, such as memory leak, constant signal switching, faulty programming, untweaked phone settings, etc.

I, personally, have not experienced any issues associated with battery hardware problems.  In terms of software, my standby time is great, and my actual usage time seems to be okay.

If your problem is hardware related, get rid of the phone or exchange for another one (and I mean if your phone drains within several hours with no or mimimal use, or gets hot to the touch).  If it is software related, wait for iOS 5.1 to be officially released.

I have looked at some of the diagnostic reports people have posted for their phones on other blogs/forums/posts, and it is clear that in some cases, the phone is prevented from entering an idle state when the lock button is pressed.  This appears to happen with some apps, mobilemail, imessage, and calendar to name a few.  When these types of "faults" occur, the phone won't enter idle-mode and remains active, when it should really be in hiberate-mode (similar to your PC).

I have WiFi always on, GPS on, some calls, 3g internet a little, a lot of games.

About 24-28 hours of standby with about 8 hours of usage.

I've had the iPhone 4s now since it came out and the battery is horrible. I see absolutely NO improvement between the battery of my 3Gs and my 4s. The battery life is not better, nor worse. On standby, not using it at all, the battery drops below 70 percent, sometimes 60 percent, by 2 or 3 in the afternoon, after being unplugged around 6 AM. On a regular day, the battery doesnt last until I get home. By sundown, I need to find a plug somewhere or simply have my phone die. Is this normal? How does it compare to the experiences everyone else is having? I dont use location services, just once in a while, I dont use Siri as much either. Is it a bug with the iOS or is it a hardware problem? I'm thinking of soon calling Apple to see what their solutions are. I just want to know if it's a problem that comes with the hardware, because if it is, then I'd soon like to call Apple and ask them for a replacement phone. Thanks, all.

I found that when I had my iPhone 4s linked to dropbox I started experiencing a battery drain.  I was losing 30 to 40 % battery charge over an average of 5 hours.  The phone was locked and in standby mode, usually with no apps open in the background, while I was sleeping.  Unlinking my iPhone 4s from dropbox ended the problem.

Just curious how many people that are having the battery drain problem have a dropbox account and have their iPhone linked to it?

Any constant AUTO syncing with an email account will incur heavy batt use due to extended 3g data signal usage. Less with wifi but still will drain. Having these type set to MANUAL push will stop this.
