I ordered a Mini display port to HDMI adapter, and connected it to my Macbook. It worked in the sense that my computer screen was now on my TV, but the resolution was slightly wrong. I went into System Preferences -> Display to change this and looked through my options under the Toshbia TV screen settings. As I went through the different resolutions to see what would look best, I selected one that caused both displays (my Macbook and Toshiba TV) to flicker bright white. It is therefore impossible to see what is going on on my Macbook, so I can't change the resolution to another one. When I pull the adapter out, the Macbook goes back to its usual display settings and is fine. The issue is only when I connect my TV to my Macbook via the adapter and both screens flicker like crazy.
Does anyone know how I can fix this problem or change the default resolution for my connected TV some other way?

Funny enough, like several posts on here, I went to the mac store to get it checked, and it was my adapter...funny that so many people had issues with their perfectly fine working adapter before the update. I now have the Moshi adapter and it works great.
Not sure what the original problem was but not buying Dynex anymore...

Well, it's not that things don't work on my system, but they are "wonky". The specs:
- 2009 MBP 15" 3.06 Ghz IC2D, Lion
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
- an off-brand MDP to HDMI adapter
- LG E2250V Flatron monitor
- the LG is set to 1080p in Display Preferences
Always when re-starting, and often when waking up, the display reverts to a "most-of-the-screen" image, as opposed to a full-screen image. What does always work, though sometimes only after a few tries, is cycling the Energy Saver setting in System Preferences from Higher Performance to better battery life. Then I will get the full-screen image on the LG's monitor. And as I operate with the MBP folded, I don't really care to check to see if there are any changes to it's screen. But whenever I pull it out to work "on-site", there are no problems.
According to other posts, it could be my adapter. And I do remember things being better under SL.

A success story.
I tried to connect a macbook pro 13" (bought in mid 2010) to a LG LED TV (55LV5500). In order to do so I bought a third party minidisplay-to-HDMI adapter (5.01$) and a HDMI cable ($1.73). I purchased from Amazon but the items came from Cable Matters. Here are the links to the two items:
I cannected the macbook pro to the tv using the adaptor + cable and:
1) the TV recognized that something was attached to the HDMI port but I saw black screen
2) the macbook recognized an attached LG display. I could try to change the resolution on this screen by "gathering windows" in the Display pane of the preferences. No combination of resolutions would work.
So, after trying many things that were proposed on this thread, I stopped by (with my macbook, adapter and cable) at the Best Buy store where I purchased the TV and asked for help.
One of their guys (he was very knowledgeable) connected my laptop to another TV with the vere same setup I had at home and we immediately got a flickering image (not black screen though!). He then proceeded to replace my 5$ adapter with their 25$ adapter (from rocketfish) and it worked beautifully. We then went around and found precisely my TV (that was on display at the store) and tried the same thing. In this case, we reproduced my black screen with the 5$ adapter and got perfect image with the rocketfish $25 one. We then checked that even the sound worked perfectly with the rocketfish dongle.
Bottom line, the cheap adapter sends a damaged/imperfect signal that different TV's can either correctly interpret (from what I read in the thread I assume that this might happen sometimes BUT have no direct experience of this case), or partially interpret (flicker), or fail to interpret (like my LG TV).
On the one hand, my experience and my solution might not be the final answer for all cases mentioned in this thread; on the other one, this clearly proves that some adapters send out a damaged HDMI signal.

I have new aluminium mac mini with the same display problems. But now, after two weeks of spasmodic use, it now will not display. Isn't it a little embarressing for Apple? And how do I install the suggested firmware update (although not a guaranteed solution) if I can't see anything! Catch 22!!!!

I just solved my monitor problem so hopefully this will help some of you out there. My mini-display port to television used to work and I was frustrated for the longest time because I couldnt fix it and most of the post out there didn't seem to have the right solution for me. Tonight, I happend to come along this post and scanned a few comments and someone mentioned the 'gfxcardstatus' program. It dawned on me that maybe one of the state (nvidia, intel or switching) was not liked by the tv. I switched it to 'NVIDIA ONLY' and it has been working like a charm! I didn't even have to unistall it. Good luck to you all.

I have a 2011 iMac with a AMD Radeon HD 6770M and a third-party MDP X HDMI cable...
It's not detecting my LG TV in OSX Lion... But, its working very well with Windows in Bootcamp...
Since i bought my cable on Monday (28/11) i couldn't test before 10.7.2 update.
I'ts certainly a software problem because i'ts working with WIN7 in bootcamp....
How could we fix it?

Me and my partner have the same problem with the perfect hdmi-cable suddenly stopped working. We have Mac Book Air 2011, 11"/Lion and MacBook 2011/Snow L, and MacBook Pro mid 2010/Snow L.

Tintan68: The 'gfxcardstatus' program should either be in your application folder or in my case, already displayed on the upper right hand corner of the computer screen (where the time is). If this application is installed look for either an 'n' or 'i' icon there. Click on it and select 'n' for NVIDIA. Good luck.

I just acquired the "Kanex Mini DisplayPortto HDMI Cable with Audio Support (10 ft.)" directly from Apple (http://store.apple.com/us/product/H4637ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng). It does not function and will NOT send videoto the external HDMI screen (at this point I am not concerned aboutaudio). The external screen is a LG2762D TV.
I have a MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011,purchased in July 2011) with the current OS 10.7.2.
I know the mini display port and LG TV bothfunction because I can connect to the TV via the mini display port to DVIadapter on the MacBook and using the DVI input port on the TV.
When I use the Kanex Mini DisplayPort toHDMI Cable and connect it the HDMI input port of the LG TV (of course firstassuring the TV input port, HDMI1 or HDMI2, is set correctly to active on theTV) what happens is the MacBook Pro detects the LG display BUT there is NOIMAGE on the TV and the TV says "No Input Signal".
So, the MacBook Pro detects the TV but nodisplay can be seen on the TV.
I have talked with AppleCare and they tellme the cable is faulty and needs to be replaced.
I am a reasonably technical person and havea good understanding of troubleshooting and I have come to the same conclusion- that the cable is faulty.
However, do any experts out there have anycomments or recommendations? Can Iexpect the replacement cable to work or am I better off with a differentproduct (eg: another mini display port to HDMI adapter together withappropriate HDMI-HDMI cable to get close to the total 10' length of the Kanex)?
PS: Kanex does not appear to have a phone number so I was only able to submit a support request on-line. I have not yet received a reply.
