Q: How to preview .img blu-ray files generated by Compressor?

I'm using Lion 10.7.2 on a MacBook Pro.

I successfully used Compressor 4 to encode and then Create DVD (a blu-ray disc) to a .img file. Now that I have the file, but no Blu-Ray discs or machine to playback for testing, I'd like to find a way to preview the contents of the disc before I ship the .img file to a duplicator service and then to the client. Any options for playback? I've looked into VLC capability, but am not coming up with clear answers for desktop playback of a blu-ray disc image.

Part of my concern wanting to preview it is that the small preview area for Menu Templates within Compressor, before exporting, is too small to really see what you're doing and what menu labels look like. It lets you set a background image, and I can see the small preview window update, but I can't read the text. Bad UI design if you ask me. Any rate, any help on blu-ray image playback on desktop would be helpful.

Thanks,

Chris.

It''s a tough one. I've not had much luck with VLC doing this…the files open but don't play well enough to judge anything. Perhaps you'll have better luck. You could also output to a red laser (AVCHD) disk and play that on your Mac, but it's not really the same thing. Otherwise, try using Clipwrap to wrap the transport stream files in QuickTime. It's a $50 app, but there's also a free trial that will let you wrap up to a minute of your material.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Russ.

I'm actually wanting to view the menu and navigation, not so much the individual movie files. I'd like to preview things just as if I clicked the Preview button in DVD Studio Pro, and can test all the links, the chapter screens, make sure everything is labeled properly. So just like I would mount a DVD .img and open in VLC, I want to do the same thing with my Blu-Ray .img file. I just haven't found a workable solution yet.

    Thanks,

    Chris.

You can also use BlueX the will wrap H.264 Blu-ray disk into Quicktime.

Sorry, I don't know any way to test the menu links from the dick image.

Perhaps your best bet would be to burn the physical AVCHD disk and "preview" the menu from that DVD.
