Dec 3, 2011 11:47 AM in response to Wouter van Herwerdenby RobSD,It requries a lot of patience, but after a week of restrting itunes every time it crashed, I was finally able to get the library uploaded. Keep in mind, I have AT&T U-Verse, the upload caps out at 1.5mbps, which is 175KB/Sec. So, do the math, if my mp3's are each 5 megs, it will take 35 seconds to upload one file, plus overhead, plus matching it on the server. Probably average of 45 seconds PER song. Multiply that by 4000 songs to upload, and you're looking at 3000 minutes worth of upload time. Of course, that doesn't coint for mp3 files that are larger, such as my DJ mixes which can be 2 hours long, and 200 megs each. Many of those files had problems, so I DELETED them from my library (keeping them on disc).
I also, every time before restarting the match process DELETED all files that said error from my library. This seemed to help the process continue past the song that caused it to crash.
So, in summary this is what you should do:
1. Delete anything questionable from your library. Delete anything that's not in mp3 or m4a (AAC) format. Delete anything that's big, such as over 50-100 megs. You can always go back and try to manually upload those later, but for now you want to get MOST of your music uploaded.
2. Don't do anything else - keep all other apps closed
3. Each time it crashes, rather then restarting itunes, RESTART your computer to clear the memory dump, and start over.
4. Make sure your computer is healthy - run windows updates, make sure itunes is up to the latest one, check for spyware, malware, and have an up to date anti-virus program. Check to make sure you have plenty of disk space, there may be some temporary files it creates when uploading, it's always good to have a few gigs of disk space free on your main system drive.
5. Make sure Windows firewall or any other firewalls that may come bundled with anti virus programs are turned off. This can block the connection or cause overhead when uploading.
6. Be patient.
Good luck, I finally got mine up, now I have to fix all the dreaded cover art issues, and try to add in some of my larger dj mixes to my library.

Dec 3, 2011 1:43 PM in response to RobSDby richsadams,Good tips and glad to hear things are working for you.
I'd add one important tip for Windows users (and you eluded to it), turn virus protection OFF. Numerous reports of disconnects and time-outs were resolved by turning virus protection programs off.
Thanks again!

Dec 5, 2011 9:07 AM in response to Wouter van Herwerdenby radiohannibal,Looks like my problem is that I'm running XP. Feel kind of dumb having not seen the requirement. Then again, a bit ticked that they've ignored XP.

Dec 5, 2011 3:45 PM in response to radiohannibalby RobSD,They may not say they support XP, but I have XP and it worked just fine after lots of difficulty.

Dec 6, 2011 5:55 PM in response to RobSDby PlumLipstick,Thanks for the suggestions. I've been fighting with crashes for several days, and you've given me a few new things to try. The Apple support site didn't help at all. I like the sound quality of the songs that make it into the cloud, but boy has this been a nightmare to get going.

Dec 7, 2011 7:49 AM in response to PlumLipstickby allanfromred oak,I copied iTunes library elsewhere then deleted all music. Then added music from copy with the copy to library check under preferences advanced. That seemed to fix my problem.

Thanks for that...seems like a decent workaround. It's too bad some of us have to have a workaround, but glad to hear that it's working for you now.

Dec 9, 2011 2:28 PM in response to jasmerphotoby suzikeith,Thanks so much! Your steps worked for me. It kept crashed (hard crashing my whole Windows Vista Machine!) at Step 2. I removed about 40 error songs, temporarily stopped anti-virus (probably didn't need to) and tried Match again and this time it succeeded. Yeah!
iTunes Match Crash Solved
1. Add the iCloud Status column via the View menu under View Options
2. Sort iTunes Library by iCloud Status by clicking the heading for that column
3. Select songs that have an "Error" Status
4. Drag Error status songs to a folder on your desktop
5. Delete Error status songs from iTunes Library
6. Resume iTunes Match. With Error status songs removed it should alliviate the crash
7. When iTunes Match completes successfully then copy Error status songs back to iTunes library and don't try to match them.
I imagine an update to iTunes will alliviate the Error status and subsequent crash. Some of my Error status songs were songs that had serious audio artifacts so removing them stoped the crash.

Dec 9, 2011 2:46 PM in response to suzikeithby richsadams,Nice...and glad to hear things are working. That's just about what I recapped in one of my earlier posts. The issues for me turned out to be the same...tracks that were really old (<~96kbps) and/or oddly imported and just didn't work. All of them were stuck in the "Waiting" status rather than "Error", but the results were the same, they just refused to upload and would hang iTunes Match at Step 2. Getting rid of them solved things for me as well. I've since re-ripped or re-imported them using different settings and all except a few uploaded okay.
Thanks again and enjoy!

Dec 13, 2011 11:29 PM in response to Wouter van Herwerdenby Xolodnyj,Itunes Music Match is complete GARBAGE. My iTunes crashes/freezes all the time the very moment I installed Music Match. Not only does it not work, but it makes iTunes completely unusable when it crashes. I open itunes, the Store takes a long time to open becaues Music Match is trying to do its thing at THE SAME TIME.
It is bad programming and if Steven Jobs was alive today, he would find this completely unacceptable and it would not have happened. I am posting to my facebook to warn others to not install and not to use iTunes Music Match. I wish there was a way to uninstalled this garbage. Unfortunately I paid for this nonsense but I would gladly sacrifice the money I paid to not have this associated with my iTunes.
My iTunes crashes about 5-10 minutes of having opened it.I have restarted my computer several times, I have shutdown a lot of processes, thinking this may be inteferring with it. I have even redirected my default storage to another internal harddrive on my computer. Nothing stops it from crashing. So far the only thing that helps it a little, is to stop Music Match from "gathering information". I find iTunes MusicMatch as a denial of service attack, because that is exactly what it does.
-
Dec 13, 2011 11:40 PM in response to Xolodnyjby richsadams,Although iTunes Match is working for me, I know others are having some challenges.
If you don't want to use it simply turn it off. Open iTunes > Store > Turn Off iTunes Match. Turn it off on any devices you have and use iTunes and/or sync music just as you did previously.
I understand that if you contact Apple they may issue a refund.
FWIW an iTunes update (10.5.2) has just been released and although they don't give the details they do say that it includes several improvements for iTunes Match so it might be worth downloading to see if it helps (along with the other suggestions posted earlier in this thread).

Best of luck!

Dec 21, 2011 7:21 AM in response to Wouter van Herwerdenby web_rene,I had the Same problem. Called Apple technical support. They instructed me to
1. Close ITunes
2. Remove 'com.apple.iTunes.plist' from ~/Library/Preferences/ ( moved to desktop )
3. Restart MAC
4. Start ITunes
Afterwards all Music was still there. Playlists as well. Only had to reactivate Match in ITunes Store. He is uploading for 5 Minutes without any crashes now!

That's very good to know. A corrupted Property List (plist) can certainly cause problems in a number of ways.
Thanks for the info and let us know how it goes!
