Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.

I got the firewire and can now import into iMovie but FInal Cut is still gving me error msgs "unable to locate the follwing external devices Apple Firwire NTSC (720 x 480)" and when I try to cature, "unable to initialize video deck". I've tired a lot of differnt setting in Easy Set up but havn't had any luck. Not exactly sure what they all mean, though. My camera is high definition. Am I missing a step? Any ideas??

Stop the presses! It's working! For anyone else having this problem the Easy Setup settings I ended up using are HD & HD - Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50. I also reinstalled FInal Cut after I go the Firewire. Not sure if that made any difference or not. Thanks again for your help Al.

HDV cameras can be a bit tricky as FCE can see them as two different cameras ie. DV or HDV.
FCE must be setup to receive one or the other.
If you shot HDV and are outputting HDV then use the 1440x 1080i Easy Setup.
There is a 50 and 60 choice corresponding to PAL or NTSC respectively.
