What versions of Pages & OSX are you running?
Where did you save the documents to?
What did you save the versions as?
What do you mean by access? Double click on documents, drag to Pages' icon, open from within Pages?
What 'black screeenshots'? Where? In Finder? In Pages?

I'm having the same issue. Went to Genius Bar. They deleted a folder called "Saved Application State" in my user folder. That fixed it ... for about a day and then it came back. Still trying to track down why.
Your mileage may vary.

Sorry, "Saved Application State" is in the Library folder in your user folder. In the finder, hold down the option key while clicking the "Go" menu. Your library folder will be in the pull down menu.

By "access" I meant clicking "Browse all versions"
After going through your questions I figured out the problem. The file was actually in dropbox but I didn't notice because it is a shared folder which I access through Finder. Once I moved a copy to the desktop it started cerated versions (it did not keep the other files history unfortunately). What was frustrating is that you can actually see the history of the file even in dropbox, however when you click to go to it each one comes up black (screenshots, sorry for non-specific language) saying "unable to open version."
Lesson learned. Dropbox files will not allow "access" to previous versions...

I had the same issue with all applications versions windows.
They where all blank with the message Unable To Open... displayed.
Applying the 10.7.3 Combo Update fixed it.
Hope this helps.
Thanks ... Ken

There should have been lots of versions saved.
Happened in multiple apps.
Versions returned after applying the 10.7.3 Combo Update so they where there.
Permissions where correct.
Thanks ... Ken

I'm seeing the same behavior, using Keynote '09 (5.3) on OS 10.8.5:
- For a file created in a Dropbox folder, when trying to access past versions, get the black "unable..." screen
- For a file created on the Desktop, which retrieves versions correctly, when moved to Dropbox it loses the ability to access the previous versions
- A file created on the Desktop, moved to Dropbox, and then moved back to the Desktop isn't able to read the versions previously accessible when it was on the Desktop
