Q: iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

    1000$ for an iPhone where I need to fiddle around for hours to make it work sub optimally is not acceptable. I'm not a techie and have no time for such things.

    Very simple. If apple doesn't react by end of this week, I will send an email to as many analysts in large banks and rating agencies as possible and make them aware of the way apple treats its customers and would encourage you to do the same.

    The only way to have thing moving is to hurt the pocket!

    SO APPLE, DO SOMETHING! YOU ARE KILLING YOUR REPUTATION!

    Sad to come so far for an Apple lover and addict. Snow to Lions, Me to iClouds, 4 to 4S are felt like downgrades and discounter solutions, is it that what you learned from Steve Jobs? You lost your soul but got very greedy.

    Apple claims that they have fixed the battery drain issues with the update iOS 5.0.1. Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged officially that the battery drain issue is stil there after the iOS 5.0.1 update was released (the sellers from Apple stores do not count for me)?

    Also it looks like iOS 5.1 beta does not fix the battery drain either. It looks to me that with every day which passes without a fix for the battery drain from Apple the more likely is that is a hardware problem (e.g. antenna, 3G chip, etc.) and not software one!! It is obvious that if one uses iPhone 4S as a dumb phone (no WIFI connection, no data plan, and no 3G connections, no internet, etc.) there is no battery drain issues (e.g. iPod, iPad).

    enx23 and Gamesick-

    Well, they havent acknowledged it officially BUT the engineers ARE aware that there are issues. I was in contact with them at HQ twice since 5.0.1 and they have run diagnostics on my phone for 4 days. The size of file created in 'crash reporter' that I sent over to them after the test was HUGE! Im guessing Im not alone.

    I think they are selling as many phone as possible pre Christmas and that means they cant make an announcement otherwise it kills sales. Yes its greed BUT I hope they therefore believe they can fix this.

    It is crappy that they havent released another update but I hope they dont think that those of us with issues will just 'get used to it' . I wont.

    Hi there,

    I just got my brand new iPhone 4S, and I am sooo happy with it EXCEPT for the battery life God… this is sooo annoying. I updated it to iOS 5.0.1 but saw no improvement.

    My serial begins with DNPG, is there really any clue that this might have something to do with this problem, as pointed out earlier in that thread? I am still in time to bring it back to the Apple Store…

    I too have an affected iPhone 4S with the serial starting with DNPGM... Apple better fix this soon.

    The best way to find out what is causing battery drain on your iPhone!

    The only way to figure out what is causing fast battery drain on your device ist to find the process/app/setting that is responsible for it. In my case it was a IMAP mail account synced with gmail.

    Here is how you can figure it out:

    1. Install a system monitoring tool on your device to have an overview of all running processes.

    2. Deactivate ALL data sending/receiving apps and processe:

         2.1: disable Location services

         2.2: disable Siri

         2.3: disable PUSH

         2.3: set email fetch to MANUAL for ALL accounts

         2.4: disable ALL mail accounts (switch off mail, contacts, calendar in each account!!)

    3. Deactivate iCloud completely - including "find my iPhone" and "iCloud backup"

    4. Be sure to have WIFI & Mobile Data still ENABLED!

    5. Close ALL Apps from multitasking

    5. Use system monitor to check that all app are realy closed

         (if mail was push or automatic fetch before it night still be running. in this case open email app and close it afterward again)

    6. Restart you Phone

    7. Note time and battery percentage to a piece of paper and leave iPhone in standby for at least one hour (2 hours will be better!)

    8. If battery drainage is <1% go ahead and activate only ONE email account, set fetch to 30minutes or 1 hour and open your mail app. leave it on multitasking bar.

    9. Write down time and battery percentage again and wait an other one/two hour(s), the go ahead with the next account, iCloud, Localisation service, siri,... until you find your battery draining problem.

    As said before, in my case IMAP with goole mail account made my battery drain very fast. I disabled this account (account must be inactive not only set to manual!!) and used the google exchange server instead. Now everything works as normal, with battery going down less than 1% per hour.

    The only thing about thet above procedure is that it takes a whole day minimum to find out what is going on but you can only find the bad process by switching on one function after an other and not several of them at the same time.

    Good luck!!

    Why even bother if you need to jump through 100 hoops!?

    I was about to buy the 4s today but thought i'd do my due diligence by going thru this forum.

    Will hold off for the time being.

    @DJ.Jan

    I can tell you DJ.Jan a faster and easier way to stop the battery drainage!

    Just turn off the Wifi, Cellular data (3G), and the all Location services off!

    Having a HUGE log file from the crash reported does not tell if it is a hardware or software issues. Also I am sure that the Apple engineers are well intentioned but unfortunately they do not decide when to inform the general public that there are hardware/software issues with the new iPhone 4S.

    These are just excuses... Always one can find a holiday and associate that holiday for not doing the right thing.

    It looks like it...

    @enx23:

    As I said before, that is not an option! I have a smartphone and I like to use it. If I cut off all data connections it is no longer a smartphone and I could go back to my old Nokia 3210...

    Right now I have turned everyting on except the IMAP for gmail and I only lost 5% in more than six hours! Of course it cost me one day of deep investigations to the battery problem.

    How to you setup the GMAIL account as IMAP account? When I setup a new email acount I just choose "Add Account ..." -> Gmail. Do you mean that this is using IMAP?

    Or did you use "Add account.." -> Other for using IMAP?

    My Iphone 4S' serial number starts with DNVG and the battery is really crappy. I'm not happy at all with this. I hope to get a solution to this soon.

    When I set up my IMAP Gmail account I simply chose the Gmail option, that automatically set-up things up as IMAP for me. [You can use exchange to set-up Gmail, as you may know.]

    You can set-up your Gmail as IMAP or POP by entering the details manually, in which case you'd choose 'other' from the new email screen.

    If you're trying out different ways to use Gmail with respect to battery drain, it could be worth trying both IMAP and POP separately and see what each does to both your idle usage stats and battery drain, after a day or so or via a controlled overnight tests. Naturally your fetch/push settings will make differences to the data gleaned.

    Gmail's POP, IMAP, SMTP and other server information can be found here:

    @bleepingApple

    Ok. Both of my gmail accounts are setup by default with SMTP server, i.e. smtp.gmail.com! Both Gmail accounts were set up with "Add Account -> GMAIL".
