Q: Problems with SMB and file sharing in Lion

I have an HP OfficeJet 8500 Premier that is only 2 years old.  One of the things I loved about it was the ability to scan documents to a folder on my Mac.  Unfortunately, the only filesharing HP supports is SMB.  In SnowLeopard, SMB worked great (as long as SMB was set up in "Sharing").

Now, however, I cannot connect my HP printer/scanner to my Mac via SMB.  I have rebooted my Mac, rebooted my printer, turned on then off the SMB sharing, tried to re-setup the scan-to folder on my printer...all to no avail.

One other oddity--when I try to turn off my SMB account (my login account) in sharing, it won't let me.  It asks for a password then unchecks the account briefly, then re-checks the account (leaving it on).  I have the opposite problem on my MBP--when I try to turn on SMB sharing and select the account, it asks for a password and briefly checks the account box, then un-checks it.

Anyone have any solutions for getting an HP printer/scanner to Scan-to a Mac running 10.7?

Thanks,

T.

I tried to compile samba but I was not successful — even though I could compile the samba3 binaries (I was not successful at all with samba4), they die abruptly with a non-recoverable runtime error on my system.

The homebrew package manager software has this issue open on the developers site.

If you could provide guidance as to how to build a functioning samba I would also be most grateful.

    Cheers!

Just upgraded a Mac Pro to Lion that is being used with a Samsung SCX-6x22 multifunction scanner. After spending a whole day tyring to figure out what was wrong, I searched online and found this thread. Guess I'll have to go back to Snow Leopard. Scanning via SMB is imperative in my business.

From what I read Apple dropped support for SMB version 1.0 and only supports SMB version 2.0. However a lot of scan to folder MFC only support 1.0

Apple screwed up on this one, I hope they reimpliment the v1.0 in an update soon. This total screws up my migration from PC's to Macs in my company. 200+ workstations.

Fretting over this for several days - using all the solutions mentioned here, then installed Bonjour Printer Server for Windows on the PC that the printer is connected to, set up the printer as usual in the Preferences pan (via the WINS option) and it worked.

I know the 10.7.2 update is out now but I have not tested it yet, I do not know if they fixed the problem.

The only way I was able to get this to work was to setup FTP service on the file server and setup an account to have files scanned to a share users can access.

    Nope, 10.7.2 doesn't fix it.

Doesn't work over here on 10.7.2 either.  I am trying to use it with samba with xbmc.  Worked great on SL before i updated. Now not so much.

i gave up months ago on getting my Saving C4540 to scan to my osx lion install.  it worked perfectly on snow leo...then instantly broke on update to lion.  after maaaaaaaaany hours of trying to diagnose the issue...i finally gave up.  i had to change my share folder to a windows machine.  does anyone know just how utterly gut wrenching it is to have to rely on a windows machine to do my daily work???  it's disgusting.  PLEASE please please please get this fixed, apple.  pleeeeeeeeeaaaasssseeee!

I have the same problem with a (very expensive) Canon iR2880 business copier. I can't send scans to the computer anymore (via SMB). This is a ridiculous change in LION.

I CAN send from the copier via FTP (meaning it has that capability). Is that possible on a little home network? Not sure if Lion accepts FTP sharing.

    HELP!

    TIA

Lion Server does have a FTP server , but has to be turned on in the shell, there is no longer a GUI interface for the FTP server.

Lion Server does still have an FTP server but it is hidden from the GUI.

You can turn it on by typing the following in Terminal:

    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist

If you want to enable the FTP server via GUI, try out the "Lion Tweaks" app at http://ifredrik.com/applications/

This is what I did for my "SMB to FTP workaround" for a Xerox 6180 printer/scanner:

Richard you are a frigging GENIUS. Seriously.

If you have a private network as I do then setting this up couldn't be simpler.

    My steps:

-- turn on FTP server with LION TWEAKS

-- create a folder in my home directory named "Scans"

-- go to my office printer and setup an address using FTP.

    Filled in

HOST NAME: FTP address (no Windows slashes or anything, just the address)

    FOLDER PATH: Scans

    USER: myHomeName

    PASSWORD: myPassword

And it just worked. Thank you so much
