Has anyone else had an audio issue with notifications, alerts, playing music through the onboard computer?

I have called apple and been giving the run around as well as the " well this is the first issue like this" crap and was wondering if anyone out there has experienced random no audio problems with the new iPhone 4s.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5

Yes starting Sunday my only sound out of the iPhone 4s is ringers and text alerts.  All games and iPod sound does not work.  When hitting volume up I get the volume screen but no dots.   Going to try the new software update then if that does not work will call Apple

My phone has been having the same issue. Not sure exactly when it happened but I noticed yesterday that my sound is no longer working on my iphone 4S. I've checked that all sound settings are on, including the mute switch on the side of the phone. I can hear alarms and phone calls but the phone doesn't make the keypad noises, or the random other noises in normal us. I hear no noise when trying to listen to music or watch youtube videos. No volume bar comes up when I click the +/- buttons. All I get is an icon that says "ringer". I found that music plays just fine when I plug in a headphones, and I can even change the volume with the +/- button when the headphones are plugged in.

Looking online when I'm dealing with sounds a lot like previously reported issues for other iphone generations. They were related to the phone being stuck in headphone mode. The suggestions were to plug in headphones and take them out a bunch of times, blow air into the headphone jack or even dig around with a toothpick to see if there's something (lint dirt etc) stuck in there. I haven't had any luck yet. If you hear back from apple let me know!

I have exactly the problem. This is caused by the iPhone thinking that it is in a "dock", hence why the volume bar has disappeared. To solve this problem you will need to do one of the following two options:

1 With a brand new dry toothbrush. Soft bristled if possible. Brush the connector hole gently for 30 - 45 seconds. Then reset your phone. Hopefully the volume issue is resolved.

2 If your are using an iPhone 4s it is barely 2 months old. Go to an apple shop, they will first do the above. If that doesn't work they will replace it. Apples policy is to usually use reconditioned phones for replacement, however the likelihood is that you will get a "brand new" phone due to life cycle and supply chain issues. Make sure you back up your phone prior to going to the apple store.

    I hope this helps.

Try this: start an outgoing call, move the phone to your ear and press the "+" volume button several times, WITHOUT separating the phone from your ear.

I have this issue also but only the ringtone sound works, nothing else. Have any of these ideas worked to fix it?

THANK YOU. This was the solution to my problem! I brushed the docking port with a toothbrush, reset the phone and my sound came back. I haven't had a problem with it since. I really appreciate the tip!

I have the same issue with my iPhone 4S and since the phone is still covered by a One year Apple Warranty I went to my service provider and they're going to send my device to Apple  and wait for 2 weeks..

i got my iphone 4s for christmas and i just had this problem today. when i go into settings, the volume keeps turning itself down. i would turn it back up, go to try to play some ring tones, hear nothing, and go to the previous page--it reset the slider to no sound. it kept doing this over and over, whether i left "settings" or went elsewhere in the settings area.

it's been driving me crazy all day, so i did some research and saw that a lot of people are also having trouble with phone calls. i called my friend just now to see if we could hear each other. it took a second, but it turned out we could both hear the other. then i put him on speaker and checked again--we could still hear each other. so i went back to "settings" and tried to raise the volume. it started playing my ringtone finally and the volume stayed up. i played music, played ringtones, played a video, all with and without headphones. it all works now. so, i recommend trying to make a phone call. if you can hear each other, that's a good sign--try putting the call on speaker, too (since the ring tones and music play out of the same speakers). something about it reset the issue on my phone. i'm sure it's just a temporary fix, but at least my phone has sounds again for now.

    hope this helps

I've just started getting this problem on my 2-month-old iPhone 4s. I get audio from my SatNav app and alert notification sounds, but nothing from Music, or YouTube, or iPlayer, or Skype, or any of my other apps. Normal phone calls seem to work okay - I don't make that many. But with skype calls I can't hear the other person (I used to be able to).

    I've tried:

    - killing all active apps

    - turning the audio switch on/off/on

    - cleaning the docking port with a toothbrush.

    - doing the weird thing someone suggested: playing something with headphones in, then plugging in the charger, then taking the headphones out, then pressing play, then taking the charger out again. I think the theory there is that it re-sets the software somewhere.

    About to try:

    - backing up and restoring the phone.

    Any other suggestions out there?

Verizon is my carrier. Much better if you return it to your service provider and discussed the problems with them. esp. our device is covered with a one year Apple warranty. Last february I finally got my replacement. So the best thing that you can do is to return it to the place of purchase or to your service provider.

I turned my phone complete off (hold down the sleep button and then home and hold)  This fixed my volume levels.  Now if it stays fixed, that remains to be seen.
