I know I have 3g off and no internet usage or anything just using my iphone 4 for texting and stuff and it drains like a piece of garbage so yes indeed a software issue. The only thing I haven't done is set it up as a new phone but I doubt that will work and will be a waste of time.

after doing what DavidCh recommend - my battery life used to be 10hours max.. now i went from 10 hours standby time to 1 day and 3 hours and then use 6hours and 32 minutes

I also have most everything turned off. Right now I am at 2 hours, 5 minutes usage, and 23 hours, 50 minutes standby. Battery was at 50% which is great!!
However, I updated 5 apps and my battery went from that 50% down to 40% in less than 5 minutes app updating.
So, the bottom line?? My phone is great for talking and texting and Words with Friends and Hanging with Friends. That's about it and presents as clear a picture as one could that there is something very wrong with this iOS!

I got my 4s just this Monday with a 5.0 OS and it was a great update from my old 3g, battery is much better, apps run faster, phone is faster, siri etc, virtually everything that I wanted in a phone is here.
I was too eager to check all the new features like wireless update so I updated to 5.0.1 thru wifi. Then 1 day after I noticed that my battery drains much more faster than my old 3g. I was fully charged last night and 8hrs later with no apps running I was down to 76%, I'm barely approaching half of my day and it's already at 55% and I just made 1 phone call. I'm all grateful with Apple's support by giving us this great phone, updates and all but man they should've tested this with hundreds of iPhones before releasing the update.
I'm now trying DavidCH's fix and hopefully it will fix the problem, I already did the reset all settings though I don't have an access yet with a charger so I don't plan to drain the battery yet til I get home. I really hope this will fix this, I really love my iPhone. =(

Battery on my 4 is still rotten. The unfortunate thing is that a lot of us who are buying mobiles for our companies and such are rather stuck with Apple due to economics. Why? Android phones lose their value like crazy, whereas iPhones tend to hold theirs very well and that's important for those of us who upgrade every 2 years (or, 18 months in the case of my company as we've opted for one of the more expensive plans with AT&T). Here's an illustration:
So, here's the thing -- it's rather hard to jump to Android if you are charged with providing technology to a company that is watching the budget closely. I'm not in love with the iPhone by any means, but my company is stuck with that platform (tiny screen, battery problems, walled garden and all) as are a lot of people. Apple needs to get this problem fixed. It's been a month, after all...

For anyone new to the thread be sure to go through these steps to address the battery after updating to iOS 5.0.1:
1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)
2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)
2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)
3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)
4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)
5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)
In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases. It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple. Good Luck!

I find it amusing they are still selling the iphone4s all over the world knowing there is a problem with it. Wouldn't they be betting off freezing sales and acknowledging there is a problem instead of playing dumb. They know **** well the thing isn't right. Android batteries last for days and can now do everything the iphone can. Just a matter of time now before Android takes the smart phone crown. Anyone tried ringing Apple support and listen to the crap they spin for an hour about trying the new update (5.0.1) or could be a faulty battery issue. ha what a joke. They refuse to take the phone back as well. wankers

As big as this thread looks, it's a small percentage experiencing the problem, when you compare apple selling 4 million 4S iPhones in 3 days opening weekend. This is a very small group.

Well actually a small percentage have time to vent. Some even dont know what a good battery life means, thanks to android phones a lot of parameters on good phone life are sort of skewed, gone are the days of good old nokia phones which used to last even 5 days with use. Smartphones are too smart, but they are dumb when it comes to being alive for a longer time. I know for one thing that apple knows about this issue, i have seen multiple calls i get from apple, i even talked and gave all the details to an analyst. So dont think apple is ignoring it , apple knows about it, they are certainly working on a fix. That saying, i fully agree with the pain , i am not a heavy user but sometimes my battery drain is unbelievable, and i did quote that before 5.0.1 i did not even know there was a battery issue. So i wish if apple admits there is an issue and indicates they are working on it , lot of people will be at peace. So to everyone waiting out there for a fix, my recommendation would be to keep giving as much information as possible in order to help apple fix the issue, just venting and getting angry at apple will not solve things, because we know how much we love apple and its products.

And to anyone following the reset , fully drain etc fixing issues, dont believe it ... I think maybe a clean ios 5.0.1 should be attempted. I think i will just delete all my apps and do a clean install once i figure out how to do that.
