First of all thanks davidch for starting this thread and offering advice.  Here is my experience for what it is worth.  This is the second time an ios update has totally ruined the battery life on my 3gs - first an upgrade to ios 5.0 which eventually required a new phone from Apple, and now an upgrade to 5.01. In the latter case I have tried everything to sort it (including the advice in this thread) our but failed and so have just upgraded to an iPhone4 as I was almost at the end of my contract (and tether). Now a few of my own observations:

    - The heating of the phone is absolutely a symptom of this drastically reduced battery life.  The phone is clearly repeatedly trying to do something which is destroying the battery life..

    - Going abroad and disabling data roaming helped, but only partially.

    - Now that I have decommisioned my old 3gs, battery life on it is now completely back to normal. Dropped 11% in a day.  So the only things I have done are to take out the sim card so I'm not making calls on it, and remove my exchange account.  I've effectively been using it as an iPod Touch all day on wifi, playing games, apps and music etc.  It is stone cold.  This makes me think that the people who say that ios 5.x has synch issues with mail accounts may be correct.  Thus one way forward may be to delete and then reset mail accounts.

Now that I have 2 phones, I'll try to replicate the problem again on my old 3gs by separately putting in my daughters sim and re-activating my Exchange account.  I'll let you know how I get on but I'm betting its the exchange account that is the issue...

Just wanted to say thanks to Davidch again for trying to help everyone with the battery life issue, and also wanted to reiterate the following which I posted way back.  From what I have read it is still valid and might help to put some concerns at rest.

I did 2 rounds of a full charge cycle, and both times I ended with around 6-7hrs of usage and 15-24hrs of Standby time.

If you are on pace for over 6hrs of usage and 22hrs of standby time, on one charge I think that's normal.  Alot of the battery life comparisons people are looking at, and I was guilty of this initially, is only doing 1 thing, not doing the 5 or 6 things we all do with our phones.  So checking email, using apps, making calls, will all use up the battery at different rates.

From what I have seen in reading almost all of the posts in this thread, and my own experience, 6-7hrs of usage at 1% battery life is normal.

At 50% battery life I am averaging anywhere from 2.5hrs to 4.5hrs depending on my usage, which is giving me an on pace battery life of 5hrs to 9hrs on one charge.

    Thanks

graham... i recommend you try my process step by step and in order, if you haven't yet.

    1. Reset all settings (settings app-> general-> reset)

2 a. Go through initial setup steps (lang, wifi, siri, enable location, etc) and choose setup as new phone (don't worry your apps, data, contacts, mail will still be there). Do NOT restore from iCloud or iTunes (It can copy back corrupt settings)

2 b. If you do not get the complete new setup screen with language setup and setup as new phone or restore from iTune/iCloud backup, be sure to go back to #1 and reset all settings again (it should happen the second time)

    3. Turn off system location services timezone and iAd (settings -> location services -> system services)

    4. Fully discharge battery (until you get the spinning wheel and it shuts off)

    5. Fully recharge battery (overnight if possible)

In my experience this improves the Standby battery drain issue significantly in most cases.  It reduces drain from 2-4% or more per hr to 0.5% or less. It has worked for many, many users now. If it does not work after a few try's you may have a real battery or hardware issue and should contact Apple.  Good Luck!

barry... you are correct... 6.5 hours usage AND 22 hours of standby is good and likely close to specifications depending on the breakdown of the usage.  apple officially specs the following:

    • Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)
    • Standby time: Up to 200 hours
    • Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi
    • Video playback: Up to 10 hours
    • Audio playback: Up to 40 hours

what i don't think people realize is these independent maximums or OR scenarios (i.e. 200 hrs with NO other usage or 6 hrs of 3G internet usage with NO other usage or standby).  to determine how phone is doing, you can use these maximums to estimate.  for instance, if you had 22 hrs of standby and 6.5 hrs of mixed wifi/3G

22/200 -> 11%, 6.5/7.5 (avg of wifi/3G) -> 87%, 11 + 87 = 98% total usage (i.e. 2% left over at that point).  if all that was on 3G, you would have gotten better than spec on wifi a little less.  note, that the 4S does loose 100 hrs on standby and 1 hr wifi according to spec, but gains 1 hr talk over the older 4 model.  in my experience, with moderate to heavy usage the 4S should get a good day, the 4S a ~day 1/2.  with light to moderate usage, the 4S will get ~2 good days, the 4 will get ~3 days.  othewise the models are nearly indentical.

    On Wi-Fi only:

    1%

    Usage: 7 hours, 5 minuets

    Standby: 15 hours, 31 minuets

I wish I could get something like this on 3G

On 3G I can usually only get about 4 hours of usage

Thanks for your reply David.  I had tried your full method a couple of times but it wasn't working for me.  This issue seems to be completely idiosyncratic in that most people don't get it but some do get it and get it very badly. For some of those who suffer, your suggested solution very clearly works, but for some others it doesn't.  I just cannot believe Apple can't isolate the cause and then give some guidance. Their silence is really infuriating.  Protecting their share price at the expense of their loyal customer base but perhaps that is just the way big business is. I'll explore more by loading back up my old 3gs (which is now miraculaously fully recovered since I 'decommisioned' it) and post back to see if I can help....

    davidch,

I have a concern i would like to bring to you... one day i got about 8hrs plus usage out of my 4S with a day and a half standby. best ive ever gotten.. recently my wifi started to act up and i was told by apple to reset my network settings.. which is what i did. my wifi is back to normal but now it seems like my batter life is kind of weak again. My standby time. I got only a days standby usage with less than 5 hrs usage time (about 4 hrs and 15 mins). before the network settings reset, i would get about 5+ hrs on a days full charge. Also, I didnt let my battery get down to as close as 0% as possible. When it was about 20 something % I put it on the charger for the night. Which i then noticed that when i took it off the charge at 100% it went down to 99% in less than 5 mins.

Should i do a full battery drain and reset my regular phone settings?

i also noticed that it seems like twitter, and my weather doesnt seem to update anymore unless i manually update it. I dont know if its me or if resetting my network services somehow messed up my 4S

8 hrs usage AND 18 hrs standby is very good and beyond specification even if it was all on wifi the expectation would be 8/9 -> 89% + 36/200 -> 18% = 107% (i.e. over 100%).  if was a mix of wifi/3G or all 3G, it will have been even more... that would have been well beyond spec.  it is difficult to determine how well your doing w/o knowing how much usage is on 3G vs wifi (remember wifi does ~50% better with battery, i.e. 6 vs 9).  a network reset should not hurt anything.  it just resets you network settings back to default.  doing a reset followed by a full battery drain, followed by a full recharge should not hurt anything.  good luck.

Hi David, I did the process that u said, then now I recogniZe that if my ip4s stand by with wifi on, it take 15% for 11 hr, if wifi off and 3G off, it take 3% for 10 hr. and abt usage, mine just can be used with wifi for 80% of apple spec, cos I get maximum 5.5 hr use with all wifi and 20 hrs stand by. What do u think? Thank you

Peter, I  finally came across at least one app that was reported by 1 user that was causing him an issue. It was in another thread in these forums. As stated earlier any number of apps 'could' cause battery issues and this particular one may not cause issues for others. The point was an app either poorly written or just corrupted install can create issues on your iPhone including poor battery performance.

Re: iOS 5.1 - Made my iPhone 4S battery performance worse!

    Nov 30, 2011 9:21 AM (in response to Sky9t_mik)

    ... I guess I found the error.

The only thing I changed was the installing of  the WIKIPEDIA-App on saturday;  and the loss of energy was huge.

Today I removed the app, fully reload the battery and now it seems to be good again...

Dont know what the App is doing in the background, but i won't install it again !

    Cheers, Mik
