My 3 day old phone just did this exact same thing. Very annoying.

Go into Settings/general/about, scroll right to the bottom, touch diagnostic & usage, then diagnostic & usage data. If there are any entries in there that are PANIC.PLIST, then your iPhone has a hardware issue and will need to be replaced.

My 4s died 2 times in 4 days since I bought it. I restored as new.The result was 2 shutdowns and few reboots in about 3 days. The diagnostics reviewed 5 panic.plist entries.

I bought the phone from a local wireless carrier and according to the protocol I received when I brought back the phone to them, they can keep the phone 30 days for repair.

If the statement about the panic.plist entries is authoritative, can it be used so I can have my phone replaced with a new one faster?

I'm almost certain that I've seen it mentioned on these forums that if you get the iPhone from a network providor shop, it is still possible to go to the Apple Store and have them replace it. The level of customer service I got from the Apple Store when I got my 4S replaced was faultless. Panic.plist are a hardware issue and as such a replacement is needed.

Having the same issue for last week, its very annoying. The biggest issue is that i got this iphone from US and I am based in New Delhi. The apple support in India told me that it can be replaced only from US, UK, Singapore, HK and few others...but not from India. Can anyone confirm this???

    @karan

Yeap - having the same issue here - got my iPhone from the UK and based in Israel (no Apple store here yet).

Talked to Apple representative in the UK and he told me I can replace my device only in a country which have Apple store (US, UK etc.).

My iphone has random shutdowns every couple of days...

I was getting the random restarts, and panic.plist error as well.  I brought my phone in and they said the hardware tested fine.  We are now doing a restore from back up (typing this on a store computer while I wait).  I will let you know if this corrects the issue.

I was told mine was due to instability in my SiriusXM, Facebook, and Skype Apps.

Panic.plist are a hardware issue, and only having the iPhone replaced will fix it. I think you have got a less knowledgable genius agent. The genius agent I dealt with told me that panic.plist are a hardware related issue, along with the guy i talked to at Apple Care when I first got my problem of random shutdowns.

If any panic.plist entries are shown, then make a genius bar appointment at your Apple Store.

Told her that. She took my phone in the back and threw it on a diagnostics station, and said the hardware is ok.   I'll see what happens after the restore completes.

A restore from a backup doesn't seem like the best option. Why dont you try a fresh one? If there is an application issue whouldn't that restore the OS with the issue as well?

I had to wait about two weeks for my local provide to call back but it was worth waiting. The phone was replaced with a new one. Apparently it was a hardware issue. It would be great though if there is an official statement about these panic.plist log records.

I agree. Restoring from a backup or even restoring as new will not make any difference with panic.plist, this is a hardware issue and as such only having the iPhone replaced will sort it out. I think the lady who Jon Beckerman dealt with in the Apple Store was perhaps less than knowledgable and thought perhaps restoring it would/could fix the issue.

When I first contact Apple Care shortly after getting my 4S. Has soon as I mentioned panic.plist, he put me on hold and then came back after talking to someone about it, and said that this is a hardware issue and that he could make a genius bar appointment and asked me which store, he then mentioned that the 4S would need replaced and told me to take a backup before going to the store.

When I took my 4S into the Apple Store and mentioned what Apple Care had said, he sat with me at the tables in the store that have the macbooks on. He then ran something on this device that he had that looked like a iPhone 3GS, he switched on wifi on my handset and ran some diagnostic tests. He then said he would replace my handset.

@san_yk: So are you saying that if I purchased the iphone 4s online i won't be able to replaced it if i have the same issue? Anyone?

If you have the time to visit the Apple store twice, don't back up your phone yet. Just make an appointment and show them the log. Once they say they're going to replace your phone, then back up at home and go get the new device.  My panic.plist was earased after backup for some reason .  So the person in Apple store just asked me to restore to factory setting and redownload the apps batch by batch. Now I have to wait for the panic time bomb to go off...
