So if I did not connect to icloud, never had the contacts turned on in icloud, tried importing from the SIM, can see the old phone numbers but can't find a name in search and didn't have sync contacts enabled in itunes am I completely *&^$ hosed?
I guess when the ios updater launched and said backing up and restoring it was just sort of kidding about the contacts.

I also lost all Address Book Contacts the first time I tried to sync my iPhone with my iMac. I do have recent Time Machine backups, so I restored this file:
And there are some tutorials about iPhone Contact Transfer, maybe it can help keep you contact safe.
Hope this works for you.

i went to update my phone and i needed more space and after turning eliminating all the apps and such that i didnt need i still didnt have enough room. so i turned off my icloud and lost all but 6 (random) contacts. i tried to update and back up my phone and i couldnt figure it out. this is how i got back my contacts
settings- mail, contacts, calenders - scroll down to "import SIM Contacts"- pressed it and then got all of my contacts back.
i assume this will only work if you have aSIM card.
i still dont know how to get my contacts onto my address book on my Mac.
anyways good luck
