I just did a software update and am having the same problem.  The program opens and then crashes.  What's up?

Same thing here - upon opening address book it just keeps hitting the disk drive continuously, and Activity Monitor variously says it's using between 1-5 GB of Virtual Memory (for ~3000 contacts) and "not responding" (no kidding, really?).  I am using iCloud (wish I hadn't made the switch, though), and I don't experience this same problem on my Lion-upgraded MacBook Air - just on my Mac Pro (with much more memory and drive space).

PS I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8)on a MacBook.

(to clarify - I have Lion on 2 of my 3 macs, with Snow Leopard on the other one...this problem is only appearing on my Lion-equipped Mac Pro.)

Update: I turned off iCloud syncing for Contacts on the Mac Pro, did a cold boot, then turned it back on, and the relentless disk drive activity and CPU/memory usage seems to have stopped.

Reminds me of my TRS-80 from when I was a kid - the solution all these years later is still to turn it off and turn it on again....

I've restarted several times, no success.  Can't turn off iClould because I'm not even on it.  Hello Apple, could we get a little help here?  This problem clearly began with the most recent software update.

Same thing here.  Activity monitor shoes constant Data writes and reads, and is using 50-100 percent of cpu

    Then eventually.... Address Book crashes.

I am seeing the same behavior.  I deleted files from ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and still

the application keeps crashing after being up for a few minutes.

I wish apple would fix this problem.

In System Prefrences>iCoud I unchecked Contacts and that seems to have calmed the old Address Book down.

I then experimented with turning it (Contacts) back on, allowed iCloud to Merge address book information, and it's still working fine.  Current CPU usage is 0.0.
